Indiana is one of the few states that charges "book rental" fees. They need to use casino revenue to eliminate textbook fees in all counties.

Why are your children a burden on me? You choose to have them, you pay for them.(Oh, and keep them quiet in public, too.)

Indiana is one of ten states that use some type of rental fee system. Other states include: Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, New Hampshire, Utah, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Kentucky.(In Kentucky, they only pay for textbooks in K-8. 9-12, students have to purchase their books.) Two other states say that local schools CAN charge fees.

Only four states, Nevada, Hawaii, Oklahoma, and New Mexico pay for textbook expenses for students. In the remainder of the states both local and state revenues are used to pay for textbooks.(Indiana is one of 46 states in which state funds are used to pay for textbooks.)

In the 2007-2009 budget, legislators gave $39 million ($19.5 per year) to fund textbooks. This is an increase from $19.9 million total (for two years) in the 2005-2007 budget. This should fully fund the program to provide textbooks for students from low-income families.

The untold part of this story is all the math books which are a part of this program only feature subtraction. As in, Josh has $10, goes to the casino, and loses $6. How much does he have left?

Right, and Indiana isn't totally socialist yet, but it won't be long.

According to some,$10,000 per student isn't enough;they want more.

Would someone in the world just be happy for once. It sounds to me like the Casino is volunteering this money. Thank you French Lick. Maybe, something can been done for the good with the money that we choose to gamble with.

Why does anyone in Indiana have to pay for text books in a public school.

Isnt it kind of like double paying?? If our tax money funds the purchase of the books for the schools and then the schools charge the parents arent we actually paying twice??? This is insane.... and the definition of "low income' is so riduculous that nobody could survive on what is considered to be "low income"..... In Indiana it makes more sense to work a low-paying job and get assistance for any and everything than it does to work at a decent job where you dont make enough to live, but make to much for assistance. Someone please explain that to me????

Why can't this be everywhere in the State? We could certainly use a break in text book fees. I'm glad for Paoli but I don't understand why the money can't aid everyone.

Because it is their kids and their responsibility.

I am a taxpayer, my taxes go to schools, I choose not to buy your kids school books.

If people can't afford books for thier kids, they should have waited to have them until they could.

Wonderful to hear that gambling is funding education. Now if only prostitution and drugs were legalized, just think how much better our school systems would be funded.

The money paying for these text books is coming out of the money the casino gives to the community, not out of anyone of your pockets.
