It is sad to see individuals like Mr Culp preventing a development that in the long run will be good for conservation efforts and great for Billy the elephant. I hope that the LA Zoo will continue with the construction and that they win the trial.

All elephants living in Indian zoos and circuses will be moved to wildlife parks and game sanctuaries where the animals can graze more freely, officials said Friday.

Wow!! This is wonderful!
I'd also like to praise AZA accredited operations here in the U.S. who relentlessly strive to educate the public and continue breeding programs to ensure the well-being of beautiful creatures like these!

I quote the Professor Raman Sukumar in the AP article:

"Increasingly, research shows that elephants in the wild have longer life spans and better health and reproductive records than those in captivity"

Duh, in a perfect world animals wouldn't be at Zoo's. They also wouldn't be poached and threatened to the point of being "endangered species". This isn't a perfect world, so educating our young is an important conservation requirement.

You can quote me on that.

All the latest research on elephant welfare strongly states that elephants cannot thrive and remain physically and emotionally healthy in a zoo. Zoo enclosures are just not large enough. No matter how state-of-the-art and beautiful they are, they just cannot provide what these animals need, which is primarily, lots and lots of space to roam. Otherwise, they get foot diseases.

I know a lot about dinosaurs and whales. I never saw them in a zoo.

I hope so. Otherwise, we're back in the 1950s with those "Elephants Only" showers that is still a black mark on our country's zoological history.

The City of Los Angeles voted for this. This money has never had any other purpose other than being used for this exhibit. I don't think it could be used for anything else legally.
It was confirmed that the City Council received edited and biased information from the zoo on the merits for proceeding with this exhibit. Considering this, and the state of Los Angeles finances today and the current mess this city is in, this issue should be reviewed.

Oh, Did you confirm that this information was "edited and biased"? What information exactly?
This all was reviewed, and approved by the council, oh, about 6 months ago....again.

A prison can have all the amenities --- t.v. books, carpets, nice toilets --- but if you can't go anywhere you want to go, then it's still a prison. If the L.A. elephant exhibits have been so great why have 14 elephants' lives been cut short there.

Daily Horoscope for December 15

Taurus

Are you in listening mode today? Let's hope so because someone wants to bend your ear and they're hoping that you can spare the time and energy for them. Although your first instincts may tell you to give them plenty of advice, try to stop yourself volunteering it unless it's asked for. Even then, you may get the sense that you're really being asked to listen, not talk.
