I lived in Long Beach for 48 years. My grandfather helped sink the pilings for the boardwalk using Barnum and Bailey elephants.
Does anybody have any videos of the hurricane damage?
There will always be Long Beach sand in my shoes.
My prayers are with the city and all of it's residents.

Here links to songs sung during the era of REAL "greatest storms of the century" and a link to a pre-talkie era Signal Corps film depicting the Mississippi river flood of 1927.

Millions of river dwellers were regularly made homeless as a result of these cyclical storms. The Government went to work using hard earned taxpayer money to shore up river levies and to make other improvements to the river infrastructure.

It is unfortunate that wealthy modern day New York political rulers made the management decision to not use hard earned taxpayer moneys to protect lowland residents and subway users from surging seas by employing centurys' old technologies to construct improved seawalls and levies. Instead, the politicians chose to use that hard earned taxpayer money to finance their "take no prisoners" wars against ordinary consumers who drink soda pop, incorrigible diners who insist on seasoning their unhealthy foul tasting Government engineered Frankinfoods, the ongoing war against peaceful entrepreneurial upstate Indians who sell gasoline to ordinary White women and men for LESS! and the hated "environmentally harmful" toilet paper users.

Because the wealthy New York political ruling class has spent unimaginable amounts of hard earned taxpayer money in true 19th century carny huckster style to convince a gullible public that "global warming" will cause weather changes,*(DUH)* they cannot plead ignorance to the inevitability of cyclical storms. In more enlightened times, even cavemen knew that weather changes. They prepared for those weather changes by having their wives sew mammoth skins to be used by their families when it did.

The film (source 3) is of varying quality, part of it is poor, part is fair to good quality. Viewing the entire 17 minutes will give the viewer some idea of why Government used hard earned taxpayer money to improve river infrastructure rather than using that money to engage in political hucksterism.(Note then Commerce Secretary of Commerice Herbert Hoover surveying the damage towards the end of the film)

you can go to the point lookout chamber of commerce page to see coverage, some of Long Beach. Also check out Newsday and Channel 12 news for photos and some information. Remember that the circus elephants were used as publicity stunt. The circus had their camp somewhere around island park i think.

I am in Florida but I just spoke to two friends, one in Long Beach and one in Oceanside.
Long Beach is a disaster. Homes are flooded, streets are filled with sand. No food, no way to travel, no bathrooms, no running water. The sanitation dept. had an explosion. There are cars on fire. Everyone is desperate. Army corps wants the town closed down. If anyone reads this message and needs to get a message to someone in Florida, please contact me.
