Article in todays observer, BOCES screws local Schools twenty eight thousand dollars for each teachers aid they hire for a handicapped student that school sends. All the local schools should look at doing more programs at home, and save a lot more money. BOCES has prices themselves out of business. The central business office was supposed to save money to the local schools, guess that turned out to wrong. Any time you go to bed with BOCES, you end up paying more in the end.

BOCES has been raping every participant in it's programs for decades. This is a surprise to you? But the schools play their games too, lying to get obvious Special Ed. kids into Career-Tech prgrams where it's thousands a year cheaper, even though they'll never pass nor get a job in that field, providing glorified baby sitting services for kids so severely disabled the "Education" part of "Special Education" is a joke!!! Many of these kids belong in state run program or residential habilitation programs, NOT school! And then there's all of the delinquents who are the biggest waste of time and space in the world, not to mention money. The bureaucracy of BOCES is beyond belief.(not that regular school are innocent; ie:what's an "Information Officer" Fredonia?)Beyond the average kid in the Career Tech programs, and by "average" I mean the kids who aren't really thinly disguised "Alt.ED." or "Special Ed." kids, BOCES is a huge drain of unnecessary money. A Superintendent, 3 Principals, LOT'S of other ridiculous bureaucrats, as well as secreterial staff for all of them, and you've spent a million bucks before you ever get a kid into the damned building!!

School districts need to wake up and see that BOCES is a huge rip-off, overpriced joke. BOCES needs to be cut down to size.

Agree. Boces teachers have the highest salaries in the Co. Big egos and no real results. As far as I am concerned over halve of all Special Ed. teachers fit this description. State Ed. is all wrong on Special Ed. Small group of Special Ed. student's parents drive the hugh spending and what a waste!

I'm sorry for all of the typo's in the above post, but discussions of schools just get me hyped, especially their waste of taxpayer..MY....money!!! And BOCES is the biggest waste of all!!! Why don't kids have 2 weeks off together anymore? Easy...because BOCES decided to split the 2 weeks into 2 separate 1 week vacations! Now, here's the deal with this brilliant decision..the kids aren't worth a damned for 2-3 days before and after any lengthy vacation, ask any teacher. Now, thanks to BOCES, the kids aren't worth a damned for 2-3 days before and after 2 vacations instead of 1, therefore doubling the wasted time, money and effort!! Stupid, stupid, stupid!!!

BOCES is costing the local Schools a lot, it was not created to drain the local Schools of tax payer money. BOCES needs to be cut down to size. The local Schools should look into doing more programs, they can probably do it cheaper than BOCES

Does anyone know what the cost differance actually is between for a special ed child to recieve services through their home school as opposed to sending them to BOCES? Just wondering for my own info.

Well for starters Fredonia pays teachers aids about $12,000, BOCES charges $28,000 for an aid.

A new aid hire at FCS would be about $9,000 do the math, BOCES also charges for the teacher also, which they probably overcharge, plus all the other charges they add on, not hard to figure out that they are ripping off the local Schools.

Thats a good start, however, other factors have to be considered as well. For instance, how many aids would be needed in each individual school as opposed to those needed in a centralized location as it is now. Also how many student would these aids be serving as opposed to the numbers now. The programs would also need to ensure the resources and quality remain in place for each individual program, necessitating additional positions at the respective school, in order to oversee all these expanded services locally. This is but two examples. Much more needs to be taken into consideration. I was just wondering if any info on the cost estimates for both directions was available or even researched yet. Thanks again.

BOCES Mr. Griffreda is where the Westfield Board of education gets all their information. Its no wonder Westfield has a superintendent like Mark Sissel who gets caught inflating his travel vouchers and putting in reinbursement forms for his kids toys. It was Mr. Griffreda who wanted and pushed for Mark Sissel to get the job. Then there is the BOE president Marie Edwards who is being sued in civil court for not paying her credit card. With individuals like these and the others its no wonder Mr. Griffreda doesn't have much trouble controlling them. They are dumb!

BOCES needs to be reviewed, to see what benefit it provides to the local Schools vs. the cost.

I'm sure SOME of BOCES programs are cost effective, especially those requiring lot's of expensive equipment; Auto Body, Auto repair, Welding, Conservation. I'm sure some of the other career programs as well. But much of BOCES is a joke, a farce enabling schools to place unteachable students in one place, to satisfy the RIDICULOUS demands of the American Disabilities Act, and to remove totally rude, disrespectful wannabe-gangsters from their schools. You'd be surprised how many of BOCES "finest" students are in your local arrest reports after "graduation". I'm sorry, but kids on probation should NOT be in any sort of regular school, nor should many of the disabled. I don't see it as any sort of worthwhile use of SCHOOL taxes to spend up to $30,000 a year per disabled student to teach them to color. It's a babysitting service, and an expensive effort to allow parents to pretend their kids are more than they are. Is this cold? Yes, but it's reality. Tax dollars should be used for students with the ability and the desire to LEARN!! You want to know one of the biggest reasons we compare so badly to schools in other countries? Simple...most of the above "students" aren't in school, dragging the averages down. In other countries, most of them, tests are given at around middle school age. If you pass, you go to high school. If not, you go to trade school. Delinquents go to jail. Mentally "challenged" are in other scenerios than school, as it should be. BOCES is the enabler of all of the above deficiencies. BOCES has become the tail wagging the dog. I doubt anything can be done to fix it at this point, not with the idiots from Albany and Washington that decide what happens in the educational system in this country.

Its more than $30,000, they charge $28,000 for the 1 on 1 aid, plus all the other expenses, I bet its closer to $50,000 or more per student total, that the local Schools get charged.

TWO WORDS:
BOCES AID
Schools Districts DO NOT PAY the price they are charged. They recieve BOCES Aid reducing the cost by about 80%
Next, perhaps the student needs a particular type of aid a student that may recive an aid is usually multiply handicapped. The aid often needs training and may be heavily experienced. It is not Jane Doe off the street.

Now here is a rocket scientist directly related to Jesus. You can tell he is related because of his kindness and caring for all of God's chrildren. To be blunt buddy YOU NEED HELP because your ashole is talking outloud. Successful programs and solid citizens grow out of BOCES every single year. No place is perfect but your thoughts exceed redicilous to the inaine. No love, no caring, no concern get you nasty as to church, show some damn kindness.
