I believe that removing The Lords Prayer and Choral Fanfare from the Christmas Pageant is a huge mistake!!! The one thing about the pageant is the tradition of the songs. I like the new FHS music teacher however I cannot support this choice. If you feel that the pageant needs to change then change the things that matter. Like getting enough boys to play the male roles.Getting enough kids for the voice speaking choir. The guy last year did a good job but it is for the kids not adults to perform. The ACLU couldn't shut it down and a second year teacher not from here should not change it!!!!

It's 80 years old, sometimes things need to change. The way people around here cling to that old stuff is almost obsessive. We are lucky to have talent like the Fischers in Fredonia. Most young educators head for the cities. Apparently, for good reason, because a bunch of dusty old coots can't handle change without crying about it. It's oldthink like this that leads a community to banking on an old cement plant for almost a hundred years instead of cultivating new business. Your entire post is risible and sad at the same time, congratulations.

I with Pageant Fan on this one. Changing something thing that has been around for this long is horrible! The people around here cling to the TRADITIONS not to just anything. I have been going to the pageant for as long as I can remember and I'll be the first to admit that I can say every line and sing every song. I am very proud to be able to say that. I have nothing against the teacher because she is a very kind person. However I do have a problem with the pageant being changed. How many towns can you go to that have good traditions like Fredonia does? Yet it seems like every year some part of a tradition gets changed and that isn't how traditions are suppose to be. These two songs are two of the most powerful songs of the pageant. Sure sometimes things need to be changed but an 80 year old tradition, really? What are they going to try to change next?

I agree with Pageant Fan & KML. Traditions are not meant to be changed. I've only lived in Fredonia for about 8 years, but I do know that the Christmas Pageant is one of Fredonia's oldest traditions, right? okay. The new teacher has only been here not even 2 whole years yet & she's already changing tradition. The Lords Prayer DEFINATELY should not have been taken out & replaced with something else. its rediculous.

Sorry I agree with "ummm". Jesus himself counseled men about clinging so tightly to their man-made tradition that they forget to look at the big picture. Mark 7:13. He told the religious leaders they invalidated God's word by their traditions they handed down. So the big picture here is that Fredonia has two wonderful teachers helping our kids grow and fostering a love of music in them. Are you going to deny your children an opportunity to have that learning experience by clinging so tightly to something you've made important? Because it isn't important to our kids. They just want to be a part of something special. Jesus preached and lived a life of humility, love, and teaching others. Seems like maybe some may be missing the bigger picture in this case. So perhaps you could use the change as a talking point to open up a discussion with your child about the Lord's prayer and what it means. Don't create dissension and discouragement, because things are different than when you were a kid. I'm pretty sure those feelings are exactly opposite of how Jesus would want people to feel.

I know that they are great people but coming to a community and already trying to get things changed? I personally think that its a step too far but hey that is just my opinion. People have to chose their battles and my goodness if this won't be a big one. I have nothing wrong with change, if it is for the betterment of something. You don't go into someone else's house for the second time and change a picture on the wall or rearrange everything in their kitchen do you? Would you want to go to a different town and be there for this short of time and try to change some big tradition that they have had for 80 years. Then the majority of the town is going to be pretty upset. Like I said people have to choose their own battles so to each his own. As far as explaining to a child what the Lord's Prayer means I feel that when that was sang during the pageant it was an explanation in it's self. Plus how many times can you honestly say that you have honestly completely accepted change when it was changing something that you had known your whole life, without being the slightest bit upset. I realize that change is a part of life and that it is going to happen weather we want it to or not.

I didn't grow up in, or graduate from, Fredonia, but the 1 thing I have noticed, since living here and attending the pageant, is it's the 1 CONSTANT that this town has! Businesses come and go...ppl move in and out...even homecoming changes, from yr. to yr...but the pageant remains steadfast! Sure, the directors have changed, over the yrs. and the students, as well, but the pageant is the PAGEANT! IT, in itself, NEVER changes...the true meaning is ALWAYS the same, the music is ALWAYS the same...why try to fix something that isn't broken? I have absolutely no problem, with the new teacher; I think she is a lovely person, but there are some things that just shouldn't be tampered with, and in MY opinion, the pageant isn't one of them. It's not about "denying our children an opportunity to have that learning experience", it's about letting our children experience something that THEIR great grandparents, grandparents, and parents were a part of...and that's something that doesn't happen much, anymore, due to all the changes that take place. Again, this is simply MY opinion...but it's something to consider.

People come back to town for TRADITIONS. Homecoming, Christmas, people cling to tradition. There is no reason to fix something that is not broken.

I agree with Michelle. I graduated from FHS and believe the pageant should not be messed with. I would like for my child to grow up and enjoy the pageant the way I did as a kid. Tradition was good enough for our parents and grandparents, why not for our kids too?????

My question to everyone who is against this change is... Do you believe that TRADITIONS cannot be improved? I personally feel that sometimes traditions should be improved upon. I also question where Pagent Fan came across this information? I have heard stories about the old pagents and the changes that were tried then, LIVE ANIMALS for the in scence and ending. I am pretty sure the echo choir was not part of the first 40 some odd years of the pagent either, sure the animals were a bust, but I feel that the echo choir is an amazing CHANGE that has been made to the TRADITION of the Christmas Pagent! In my opinion, so take it for what it is worth, the Fichers do an outstanding job. I have attended numerous music and band concerts that have been under their instruction in the past two years the involvement of the students in both of these programs look to have increased which is awesome! I applaud them for everything they have done here. Fichers, keep up the good work and don't let the small town minds discourage your creative talent!

I agree with "think about it". I want to have good educators with my children while growing up in Fredonia. I get sick of people who get out their pitchforks and lanterns every time a new teacher wants to do something differently. Is this about YOU or your kids? Don't you want them to have a quality education from August to May? Have you taken the time to have a conversation with the teachers? Do you think that PERHAPS they have a reason for decisions made? Do you not think they consider the children FIRST while doing these things? Why crucify their decisions? I have a feeling this isn't the FIRST TIME EVER that things have changed in the pageant anyway. Again, the whole love and humility thing is a pretty awesome lesson to teach kids this time of year. And they learn best by example...

Mrs. Fischer is a good person as well as teacher. My only problem is that she took out the Lords Prayer. It is such a powerful song and I can speak with confidence when I say it is the majority's favorite song. Adding songs like Mrs. Viers did is great, but taking away the songs we know and love just doesn't seem right.

Its not against the teacher but leave it alone were lucky to even have the pageant with all the pc and separation of church and state etc. But I understand she is now asking students to step down from earned singing positions if they comment in a non supportive way or against her decisions.

she didn't ASK the student to "step down", that student didn't have a choice! that student was TOLD that they were no longer in that EARNED singing position because they didn't support the teachers decision regarding the pageant! i guess the teacher doesn't realize there are far more, than just that 1 student, that think it's wrong. look out kids and watch what you say because you might be next! and the school system won't do anything about it because they stand behind their faculty, regardless of right or wrong! they want to preach to kids about "bullying" well THATS bullying and it's from our own teachers and they can get away with it because they are "adults". this is the "quality education" that our kids are receiving :( say what you want about the pageant but everyone has the right to their own opinion...unless your a student...that just gets you in trouble.

How may I ask is that bullying? That is a oppertunity that a student has to earn and if they really truely wanted that solo then they should have thought about that before they made their feelings and opinion know. Ill admit that I was upset when I first heard but after talking to a few of the students I found out that they are being replaced with more modern songs. Yes I am still not 100% behind her but as a mature person I have respect for her opinions as well. Each person is entitled to their own opinion, student or teacher or alum or community member, people just have to decide if they really want to risk loosing something before they go spread their opinion.

that student wasn't pulled from a solo spot, they were kicked out of select singers! and 1 has nothing to do with the other; they were in select singers BEFORE all this with the pageant! the teacher has more "power" and "authority" and chose to "pick on" the weaker party, the student; THAT'S bullying! just because the student disagreed with the changes being made doesn't give the teacher the right to kick them out of a spot that they had to try out for! sounds like that student was only good enough, for that spot, as long as they kissed the teachers butt and didn't make waves. you said each person is entitled to their own opinion, and i agree, therefore, don't punish the other person just because the opinions aren't the same!

OMG people think about what you are posting!!!!!!!
This is a CHRISTMAS pageant and you are making a huge uproar over something as trivial as changing some songs! It will be ok! Traditions are good but they also can be changed and made better too. At least give it a chance. You are taking the meaning of this pageant and making it ugly. That is not what CHRISTMAS means!
Theresa and Matt have done so much for this school system and the kids love them. I appreciate them so much for what they have done for our children.
Life will go on!!!!!!!!
Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!

Im sure that being a new teacher is not easy, however by making changes such as taking The Lords Prayer and other songs from a tradition that is so well established, you are not making your job any easier. This is about like taking the prayer from graduation to an extent. You do not mess with tradition of a small town especially when you are a new face in town. I had no problem with the new music teachers until this happened. Just think about what you maybe setting your self up for before you make a decision like this again. Obviously people are very upset about this decision.
