Can life really be that bad!? I just don't get it! I guess sometimes people feel that there is no way out of what ever they are dealing with. My sympathy goes out to this person's family and friends!!

For some people no amount of reasoning will change their minds. Obviously something caused this person to chose from a temporary problem to a permanent solution with no other recourse.

No one of us will ever understand what this person was going through and has no right to judge this young man for his actions. It's hard to imagine that taking your own life is the last resort, but again, no one of us is in that person's position and understands his situation. I'm so sorry for the family, friends, students and staff that are affected by this. Everyone is in my thoughts and prayers.

The school officials did not brief the students on anything- they called a meeting to basically tell them there was a "situation" and that they had been put on "lock down" to prevent any one from getting hurt- never said what for. The rumors where either a girlfriend/boyfriend had a fight and police were called, there was a drug dealer around campus, or as we now know someone committed suicide with a gun. The school staff did nothing to explain or clarify the reason for the lock down- as is typical of them- leave the students in the dark...wouldn't want the school to get bad press.

I am a commuter student and this mournful loss is going to touch our whole campus, whether you knew the young man or not someone you know or someone they knew was touched and it is like a ripple effect, we have all been touched by this event, and I Pray that we all say a prayer for not only the young man and his family, but for the whole MVNU family here. Let us all know that the Lord is never going to give you anymore burden than He know we can handle. In times of crisis we all need to gather and be strong and prayerful for each other as a Christian Family. As a mother and older student my heart is breaking for this family and their loss, I Pray that the Lord keep his Loving arms around his whole family and peers.

You are correct. People who commit suicide are not thinking about anyone but themselves, that's why they do it. To them it must be a hopeless situation. Prayers to the family.

From MVNU's website:posted at 10:20AM
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio --
We regret to inform you that one of our students, Michael Gehrett, passed away sometime between 3:30 and 4:30 this morning, from a self-inflicted wound that occurred off campus.

Michael was a junior criminal justice major from Atwater, Ohio.
__________

Late last evening, the Office of Student Development was notified there may be cause for concern related to Michael. Since MVNU was not sure of his whereabouts at that time, we moved to secure the campus out of concern for the safety of students.

Not long after that, the Knox County Sheriff’s office notified MVNU of Michael’s location where he was subsequently life-flighted to Columbus, Grant Hospital.

Once MVNU knew the campus was safe, leaders met with students in the Chapel at approximately 1 a.m. to update them as much as possible at the time.

MVNU was restricted last night in the information leaders could share based on advisement by the Sheriff’s office and because some family members had yet to be notified.

Please pray for Michael’s family and friends during this time. Tragedies like this are hard to understand and even more difficult to accept.

Counseling is available through the Counseling Office or Campus Ministries. Please take advantage of these services offered to students, faculty, and staff.

The MVNU campus community will come together for a time of prayer and reflection at tomorrow’s 10:20 a.m. chapel service.

__________
Prayers to this young man's family and the faith community of MVNU

There are soooo many factors that have been over looked I a MOTHER of a CURRENT student whom got information directly from a person in the midst of the situation have stepped back to look and share with my child why some information may have or was purposely withheld....Ever been in a room with young girls whom have spotted a spider they tend to PANIC so possible this could have been their rationale for not passing on details of the situation and rumors begin and become truth from off the cuff commets such as 'Maybe there was a drug dealer on campus' and as we all know the game of telephone things can easily get passed on as truth verses reality a person walks by a room hears part of a conversation IE drug dealer and the ball is rolling with thoughts and ideas Was the security/police keeping information from the people as risk possibly and for good reason I belive that action at the onset of situation protecting others until further information and fact is known can be a good thing at the time the incident occured all facts were not known was there someone else out there with a gun with a vengeance againest students the school or any number of things. NOT everyones first concern is concerned about bad press maybe there biggest concern was protecting their students and withholding information because that insued less panic then passing on unknown confirmed info the action to protect the students is just that ACTION its more important to PUSH a person away from a car that is about to run over them and explain later than take the time to explain before doing so it is too late then. I can say without reserve I went totally into MOM mode freaked and called campus security looking for info and talked on end with my child/student not only to help her to look at the situation from the back side and also de-freak myself about my child being in harms way. We are not immune to lock down status for we live in a community where it has happened more than once a year though out the school career of both of my children. I have rambled on enough still have more thoughts but will share them another time time...thanks for listening hope you can see the point I was trying to make

As a staff member on campus, I can say that our first and foremost concern was for the safety of all of out students, and not to protect against bad press. While it would be nice to control the misinformation that was reported by local news, we all know that they were simply looking for a story. I am saddened that some folks are more concerned that they were left "out of the loop" than they are about the fact that a life has been lost. A life that I knew personally. He will be missed on our campus.

Perhaps it was unclear at first if this was a suicide or a homicide? There probably was no immediate way to know the extent of the situation (whether or not this individual acted alone or if there were other people and/or weapons involved).
I do not think it is a waste to employ preventative measures to protect the lives of students. Imagine the difference it would have made if these preventative measures were place in other campus/school shooting situations?

My little sister attends MVNU and I'm glad it's their priority to ensure her (and the entire student body)saftey. You can't put a price on life.

Although I agree that we can lean to quickly to the panic mode... MVNU was spot on in this case. I am thankful they locked down as opposed to the possibility a student or my daughter being a witnness to the tragic aftermath of the scene. They appeared to issolate and shield the rest of the campus while handling the terrible situation with wisdom. Prayers to the family, faculty an students

Protecting and shielding is one thing when it comes to the students at MVNU, however, isolation--I think that's a poor choice of wording, just simply because being isolated from the world is not particularly a way to prepare young people to enter the world. The vast majority of the world does not live in a bubble, much like living on the Naz campus--I should I know--I went there!

As a student of MVNU and a friend of Michael I send out my prayers to family and and friends. Being on campus at this time is very tough but we have the community, staff, faculty, and students there for us. We will never truely understand what caused this to happen but this is not what matters in this situation. We need to be there for the family and make sure that that are taken care of in the time of need. Please understand that the campus was just trying to protect us students and didn't know the extent of the situation. I show my gratitude for there concern and feel that they took the right percaussions.
