Tues. Bible Reading Schedule: Morn. Proverbs 13-15 & Even. 2Cor. 5

Read Nehemiah 8:1 through 10:39

But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God (Nehemiah 9:31).

This statement followed a long list of Israelís sins. Godís people were disobedient, unfaithful, ungrateful, and idolatrous. For centuries the Israelites went through one vicious cycle after another. Judgment followed rebellion, which prompted repentance, and ended with God showing mercy. Time after time this cycle played out in the history of Israel. God dealt with the Israelites with amazing patience. He never gave up on them and, in spite their sin, He never abandoned them.

As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are imperfect people. There are times when we fail to live up to Godís standards. But He does not abandon nor will He ever give up on His own. The One who dealt so patiently with the Israelites is present to graciously deal with us. He forgives our sin because of what Christ did on the Cross. God sends the Holy Spirit to convict us and, when we repent, He always shows mercy.

Thought for Today: Our merciful God will never abandon us.
