Read 3 John 1:1–14

Third John is a short letter the apostle John wrote to Gaius, a believer who was taking care of traveling teachers and missionaries. When his reputation for friendship and generosity reached John, the apostle wrote to affirm and thank him for his hospitality. Although this is a personal letter, we can learn much by applying its lesson in our own lives.

Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters, even though they are strangers to you (3 John 1:5).

Like Gaius, we need to take the opportunity to host visiting evangelists and missionaries. By hosting them we can help them spread the gospel, partnering with them in ministry. While not everyone is called to preach or go to the mission field, we are called to pray, share money, and show hospitality in order to support those who do go. John said by doing so we “work together for the truth”(3 John 1:8).

Challenge for Today: Look for an opportunity to show hospitality to God’s workers. It may be in the form of a gift, an open home, or a word of encouragement.
