Just goes to show how buck fever can ruin your life(or end it). My question is, was the death of his brother worth that possible trophy buck kill? Start thinking people!!!! WEAR orange and KNOW where your hunting buddies are at all times. My heart goes out to this family, but I hope that this death was not in vain and opens the eyes of others so we can prevent this from happening again. One other question. Have any holsteins been shot yet this year?
No disrespect please

I went to school with both of these guy, and I lived on Bloye Road for 19 years, known them since we were kids. They ALWAYS practiced safe hunting techniques, now I dont know the full detail....and I really dont want to, hit very close to home for me.....very saddened by this news. My prayers go out to this family and I will definatly be at the funeral. I knew them both personally and it tears me up to know what his brother is going through.....Im so sorry buddy.....hang in there.....accidents happen....thats why they are called accidents....

What happened is that Derrick and a few others were in the woods driving deer towards Dan and the other half of the hunting party. Dan saw "something" coming though the woods towards him and took a shot. It happened to be Derrick. That tells me they weren't practicing safe hunting. I feel sorry for Dan. To have that hanging over him for the rest of his life is going to be a life sentence in itself. Not to mention how many people will be whispering and pointing fingers at him in town. It was an accident. But it was a preventable accident.

Actually your facts are wrong, my sister works at OGH and I have heard the full details of the accident. It was exactly how it is, an accident, I will not post the details on here because it has not been released to the media. But I will say this, it could have been prevented, but bad things happen to us all. And people in our town are not cowardly assholes who whisper and point feelings, the whole community is crushed by this. Once again, NO DISREPCT PLEASE

Derrick and Dan happen to be my cousins, and not a damn thing you just said is right.
It was an accident, My FAMILY has been doing the same deer drive for many many years, and if my counsins were anything.. they were careful and they loved each other as much as any brother could love.
REGARDLESS of weather or not this accident was preventable dont you think it is a little disrespectful to feed off of MY family's greif.
And as for pointing fingers.. there isnt a damn finger to be pointed. YOU may point your finger in blame, but "EVERYONE" that actually knew my cousin would know that there is not a bad bone in either of their bodies.
Sincerly,
Pissed off in NY.

I have no disrespect for those with good hearts. I however, do not have respect for those who cannot respect. I live in town and I have already ran into 4 people who cracked jokes about the ordeal. There's rumors already floating around that it had to with the mixture of narcotics and alcohol. I set the facts straight with them. And my facts are right because I talked to one of the people(a friend of my family) who was in that hunting party.

Of course people will make jokes, but people with a heart will not.
People who are cracking jokes should be cracked in the face.. but god will take care of them.
As for Derrick and Daniel, they are AMAZING people... I dont think I have ever ran into someone who didnt like them.
I have heard the story as well from my own uncle who was also in that hunting party.
I think it is very disrespectful that people can come on here who didnt know either of my cousins, and say whatever they damn well please... I have no objections to peoples opinions, even though I am very saddened by my cousins death, "I" know it was an accident. And so does my family.
All I ask is that Derrick and Dan be shown a little respect, after all derrick is gone.. and nothing will bring him back.. but Dan isnt gone and he is damning himself every second for not being more careful.. and not taking a second look before he fired... Dont you think it is bad enough that he has to live with that guilt, and he knows he should have looked twice.. without haveing people rub it in his face.
Thank You

Im glad somebody agrees with me, I lived in Franklinville until just a couple years ago, I still only live a couple miles away in Olean.

I graduated with Dan, Ive known Dan and Derrick since we were kids, I grew up on that road...been friends with them forever.....I am going to be at that funeral. I hope Dan is there, if he isnt I totally understand and I will visit him later if he is home. But to the man from Buffalo, yeah you live in a city full of dumbasses who dont know thier ass from a hole in the ground so it dont suprise me none that people are acting foolish.

To the person from Syracuse, I am sorry for your family's loss.....very sorry.....Dan and Derrick were like brothers to me and his parents would always treat me like a member of the family whenever I walked down the road to hang out with them. This really hit close to home for me.....I cannot stop thinking about it. I lost a brother in 1999 so I can understand the pain Dan is going through, but it is 100x worse for him....I just want him to know one thing though....accidents happen, yes he is going to have to live with it and its terrible but I am going to be there for him no matter what, people can point, people can say whatever they want....what matters most is that his family and friends still love him and we are here for him. I dont blame him for Derrick's death at all....and I never will.....RIP Derrick....may the Lord hold you and keep you forever and we will see each other again my friend :), and to Dan...No matter what...You can always talk to me....please hang in there and be strong buddy..

You must be a Chase then. I'm guessing you're talking about Billy.
