I have been here to the adolescent unit 4 times. I have issues with the social worker( Malo) and psychiatrist.( wojeich szulachowski) and their visiting policy. It is a really f**ked up place. The most recent time I was there they transferred me to an intermediate care unit in southern nj. It was accomplished in such a manner that was dehumane. They used terror tactics to scare me shitless about the receiving facility. This was done in the intention of eliminating my anxiety and suicidal ideas. The social worker was a complete ass about the transfer. As for visiting hours and their policy. They would let my family on the unit late and make them leave early. They drive an hour and only get 30 minutes out of the guaranteed hour. I approached the unit director with the concern in all of the admissions. He refers me to the patient advocate and does not call her to tell her I need her. Unit director is Shaun Sweeney. This just irked me. When in my commitment hearing I told the judge. The social worker told me to shut up in front of judge Callahan. I signed a 48 hours notice because I was disgusted with the carrier clinic. This means I signed myself out. They committed me involuntarily with lies and embellishment so they could" punish me" for being suicidal and send me to bridgeton health center intermediate care unit. They had spiders crawling around the pantry. They have laundry machines no soap. Malo was an ass about the visiting policy as well. They said if I return as an adult they will immediately make a referral to state hospital. They would be a great boot camp. Malo you ain't tough stop acting like it. Dr s over medicated me to the point I would sleep all day and be awake 2 hours. They made me Sleep in the lounge. I was on 1:1 or status1 supervision which meant I was a safety risk which I was at the beginning they put me on status 1 after they made the referral and I was stable. This whole referral thing bothers me. I am currently going through the healing process still with my therapist and I got out in July 2012 and went to another high security facility. The most recent time I was there was my 24 admission this ain't my first rodeo. I know many good places and many bad places. Everything is a threat. I formed this committee with 8 other patients on the adolescent unit. It was aimed at reform. I wrote to the joint commission. The accredation letter I got back was a form letter. I hope it changed. It said they are going to do an inspection. Inspections are cleanup days for them. Someone who had suicidal thoughts got discharged to their family. I had no thoughts or hallucinations got sent away. Does the danger to self or other or property standard apply to this fucking place. I wanted to smoke a bong and I don't do weed and never tried. This placed caused me alot of trauma. The ambulance company they contract with has. An attitude.THIS PLACE SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN. Have a happy day. I wish you luck

I was in Carrier about a year ago for only four days, but it was one of the worst experiences of my life. I was 15 when I went and I was sent there for cutting. When I got there they didn't give me my medicine for 2 days even after my mom kept calling and then they decided to change my medicine which did not work. There was only one good counselor and most of the time we just sat around watching TV. The food was horrible and the environment was very depressing. It was more of a jail or a mental hospital from the 1950's. I still have horrible memories because the girl in the room next to me was cutting herself with pencils that she broke in half. That shows how bad their supervision is. I could only call my mom once a day. The showers were cold and we had to wash our hair with the same soap that we used for our body. One of the nurses made fun of me because I was apparently too old to be missing my mom after only being there for two days. After I first arrived to Carrier in the ambulance a man that worked there came in the ambulance, looked at my cuts, and said "oh those are superficial." The people in the ambulance were pissed, as was I. I will never forget the hell I went threw at Carrier and I am so fortunate to have only been there for four days. These are just some of the things that happen. But I would say NEVER go there and Carrier needs to be investigated by the police.

carrier is a very short term short sited facility. the staff is more willing to medicate then anything else. they tell you the patient needs more help but they can not or will not asist in referrals. the group therapy for adolecences is run by the adolecenses
they are unable to diagnose anything

go private and get help on your own they are NOT good

I complained to the joint commission 1 renaissance boulevard oak brook terrace Illinois 60181
I have not been back to see what happened there after I complained. I wrote about their constantly changing visiting policy and the rude social workers and psychiatrist. Psychiatrist goes by the name dr s to the adolescents and social worker goes by the name mala. I was there voluntarily I signed out and they committed me involuntarily terrible place

There were spiders near the pantry 3 inches large in diameter yes I measured one. I never got to sue them but I was going to. The spider thing is a health issue that is dangerous. You take suicidal teens and put them with poisonous spiders and no observation. They will try to do stuff.

I tried to escape. The cops picked me up along the highway hitch hiking They brought me back kicking and screaming.

I had to see a judge about my commitment. And transfer to longer term high security hospital known as the bridgeton health center run by south jersey healthcare. They caused me to decompensate so much that I had to go to a high security hospital

The carrier clinic adolescent unit is hell.

If carrier gets shut down I will throw a party up there for the closure

Threaten to call the joint commission or the state. It sometimes works miracles. If it doesn't call them and get them investigated. Look up the dept of health on the Internet. The nj dept of health licenses them not human services

The biggest problem with Carrier Clinic is- like most mental health facilities- they do not ever consider ifectious causes for mental health symptoms and would not know how to recognize it. In New Jersey, borrelia and other tick borne infections are nearly ubiquitous, and many patients are infected but remain diagnosed based only upon their mental health symptoms (bipolar, ocd, depression, etc...) an infectious cause is never considered therefore never identified and treated. If it is considered at all, most facilities have no idea how to test and diagnose and it remains missed anyway. I believe infections often contribute to or can outright cause many psyhciatric symptoms, and places like Carrier are too comfortable and entrenched to give a damn about doing anything but react to symptoms and "help" people live greatly diminished lives.

Carrier Clinic adolescent unit doesn't help. They are uncommunicative. The facility is old and dirty. They had puzzles and games..pieces missing. They will inform parents of stupid stuff but not more serious issues. The doctors there are not very good. They do not try to understand what is the kids issue at all. The billing department well they are just incompetent.
Do not send any one there if you can avoid. Unfortunately NJ does not have any good facilities that I could find.
And the post by Anne G is completely true. They do not/will not do a simple blood test to see if the patient has lyme disease. Lyme disease undiagnosed can lead to a myriad of mental health issues.

This isn't true. No one under 13 is admitted

This is the worst place I have ever been. The doctor is way overstaffed. I was there for 3 days before I left. I never saw a doctor ,consolular nor was I shown around or told what to do. If you have good insurance plan on staying till they milk it out .if you don't don't even bother checking in you will come out with more problems then you came in with. I have a law suite pending for the staff refusing me my meds.
They usually will not milk out your insurance. They are short term and they even tell you that. After you exceed the maximum length of stay they send you to a $tate p$ychiatric ho$pital to finish out the insurance. If you are voluntary they will commit you when they go to do this. There is no way. Out when once they make a referral. Carrier gets $$$ for sending patients to state they have nice contract with human services dept. that if you send a certain amount of patient to them they get lots of $$$ from Trenton psych and Ancora and Greystone Park. However you look at it carrier is only out there for money.

DO NOT BE AFRAID OF CARRIER CLINIC FOR SEVERE DEPRESSION!!
Before my sister was admitted to Carrier Clinic for severe depresion, I read these reviews. I was horrified as I read the tales of this nightmarish hellhouse. I was terrfied that we had done her a great diservice by putting her there.
I was initially thrilled that my sister finally agreed to go to Carrier for ECT as repeatedly recommended by her pyschiatrist. Over the years she has struggled with drug and alcohol abuse, suicide attempts and most recently spent 9 months in bed, only getting up to use the bathroom. SHe didn't call or speak with family or friends and totally isolated herself from the outside world. Her husband had to try to get her to eat and take showers, and basic functions of life.
After reading these reviews, I was scared to death that we had made a mistake taking her there. As expected, in the beginning, she protested about everything from the room, bed, food, staff, on and on. But she agreed to the ECT to prove to us that nothing would help her, she was different, nothing would work on her, she was too far gone, she had done too much damage to her brain and she may as well just die.
But we persevered, going on visiting days, bringing items she requested (never successfully choosing the right things, of course).
HOWEVER!!!! by the end of the 2nd week of ECT, we started to see some improvement of her mood. Other patients seemed to love her - turning her into the belle of the ball. She actually started to show some glimpses of the active, vibrant sister I once had. By the 4th week, I felt like I had witnessed a miracle - really! She was being nice to us, apologizing for the pain and suffering she had inadvertantly inflicted on family due to her illness. She has been home about a month now and she is driving, going shopping, calling friends she had exiled, out to lunch, taking my 86 year old mother to dr's appt, doing her grocery shopping (all duties previous mine).
I know I was not the patient, but I know how families suffer and worry - so, if you have a family member suffering from severe depression, DO NOT BE AFRAID OF CARRIER CLINIC!!!
Carrier and ECT gave my sister (and her family) her life back!!!! It is nothing less than a miracle for us. I hope that helps some of you looking for answers.

DO NOT BE AFRAID OF CARRIER CLINIC FOR SEVERE DEPRESSION!!!
My sister finally agreed to go to Carrier Clinic for the ECT her psychriatrist repeatedly recommended. And she only agreed after she ended up in the ER where they gave her a choice of going voluntarily, or they would be forced to commit her. Then she begrudingy agreed to go. I was so relieved because this was the last stop or her train of self-destruction. She has struggled over the years with drug and alcohol abuse - but recently was in bed for 9 months, only rising to use the bathroom. Her husband tried to get her to eat and bathe and other basic functions. She completely cut herself off from family and friends saying that she was too sick to talk on the phone or even watch TV.
Anyway, I thought going to Carrier would at least be a chance of recovery (and I was right, thank God.)
But in reading these reviews of nightmarish experiences in this "hellhouse" - I started to panic - oh my God - what have we done to her?
But there was one good review - and I thank that person for that - and we persevered. Going to visiting days, bring the items she requested (and they were never the right ones, of course). In the beginning, she sounded like these same reviews - it's a hell hole - the staff - the room - the food - everything was a nightmare to her. But she continued with the ECT and about the end of the 2nd week we starting to see changes. The other patients loved her - told us how wonderful she was... not the same person we left there 2 weeks ago - suddenly the place was not that bad - the people were nice and the food got better.
She has been home now for about a month and the difference is remarkable - she is driving and reconnecting with old friends she had ostrisized - going out to lunch - taking my 86 yr old mom to drs appt and grocery shopping - IT IS A MIRACLE.
So - I know I was not the patient, but I know how families suffer and worry and I am here to tell you -
DO NOT BE AFRAID OF CARRIER CLINIC FOR SEVERE DEPRESION!! Carrier and ECT gave my sister her life back!!! I hope this helps someone looking for answers and encouragement.

Carrier is bad for anyone with psychotic disorders my sister was there and was kept in restraints until her court date. Once she went to see the judge. The doctors said she needed more care than they could provide. So they sent her to the Trenton state psychiatric hospital. Hellhole. They will torture anyone like this if you bother them. They will scare you shitless about Trenton. If you go to Trenton it is actually pretty reasonable. The social worker was an ass. The psychiatrist. You couldn't understand his accent. Wish everyone luck but this review may be true. But don't go if you are involuntarily committed.

I was very surprised to see all these negative comments about carrier clinic. I spent a week in the ACU and another week in APA. Although some of the patients made me a little uneasy in the ACU a lot of the staff was nice to me and respectful, the food wasnt the best though. When i was in the APA unit the food was fine though, the staff in the APA unit were very nice especially the nurse i had. I honestly miss some of the staff that worked there.

The worst plae ever. So disorganized. Lost paperwork. Couldn't find what was needed. Couldn't find medication. Gave the wrong medication. Rude and nasty workers which others flirted with patients disrupting treatment. Head for the hills! People smuggled drugs in and were swapping meds!

STAY AWAY from this facility. This "Hospital" has a terrible record when it comes to their psychiatric staff.

Dr. Wojciech Szulaczkowski, Clinical Psychiatrist on the Adolescent Unit, is known to interject his personal beliefs in his treatment of patients which is completely inappropriate. He is also a vocal advocate of REPARATIVE THERAPY for LGBT youth and adults. Reparative therapy is basically treating gay and lesbians as if their sexual orientation were a psychological disorder and forces them to deny who they are as a person. This causes much mental stress and long term psychological harm. This treatment has been completely discredited and is also ILLEGAL in New Jersey. Carrier Clinic will soon be facing law suits if they don't get rid of this so called doctor. Keep your children away from this place, gay or straight!!!!

Worked Both @ Carrier & East Mountain. I worked Crisis Intervention & Mental Health Tech. Both hospitals MHT's & Crisis Intervention are overworked and underpaid. If your not a nurse or any position of power you are treated like less of a person. As long as you work 16 hour shifts 5-6 days a week. Are ok with getting abused by patients as well as staff then maybe this job is for you. I started at 11.50 a hour and within 2 years was up to almost 20/Hr. Once you get around 20 you sneeze and your fired for a cheaper option. Poor Management especially on East Mountain Side where even the director has physically abused patients in the past as well being married and promoting his girlfriend (Staff Nurse) to Nursing Director. Prospective Employee Beware As well As Hopeful Patient. Facility Is poorly run!!
