I just recently learned of the "House In The Woods" fire. So sad that Lathrup Village has lost one of it's most distinguished and recognizable structures. I spent many "sleep-over" nights when the Dondero's lived there. My love of that beautiful, graceful, and grand English Tutor sparked my love of architecture. Funny, I never found the house to be frightening or scary (except when Dana and I would sneak into the basement).
6/23/12 CATHY HOWE AND I SPENT MANY HOURS EXPLORING THE HOME I LIVED IN AND I TREASURE THOSE TIMES TO THIS DAY.

I lived in LV when i was younger 9 to 15 1992 thru 1997, I don't think i ever heard it called the house in the woods, but it was always spoke of as a creepy old place. We all thought it was haunted but never knew. One Halloween they let people in for a drink and a candy but only in the living room? with the big fire place. I always wanted the chance to explore that place. It seemed like every adventure i could ever imagine. I was sad to hear of its fire. That place really turned me to learn more about Architecture and some of the history of Lathrup Village. If anyone ever gets a copy of the Blue Prints man i would love to take a look at them. it would be my little way of going though it. email me [email protected]

I visited the house. Me and a couple friends. And I always get a weird feeling in the house like a cold, scarry chill. My cousin have seen weird things when she went in before. I would like to know is it really haunted.. has anyone ever REALLY seen any spirit or anything? Other than just mystery and superstition?... Please let me know.
YES YES YES I used to live there late 60's early 70's in that house and I saw a young woman coming down our sprial staircase one afternoon and she said something to me but I can't remember what it was...

My Family lived in the House in the Woods from 1968-1974. We were the only family to ever live in the home as a whole, meaning we actually lived in the whole house,(save the servants wing), whereas others have only occupied several rooms of the home for thrity-some years. Yes, it did have a reputation of being "haunted" and my girlfriends were afriad to come over, but it was the most beautiful and charming English Tudor in the area; secluded by 6.5 circular acres of very tall trees (Dutch Elms) and a huge wooden fence. I used to traverse the rear of the property and "jump the ditch" to get to McIntyre Elementary.

I to recall the house and the stories about it.

But this post is to addres the fact that Louise Lathrup was a RACIST and whatever her accomplishmens the above fact tarnishs them.

Was she Hitler , no but as an example Hitler made the buses run on time .

We moved from the UP to Detroit to Lathrup Village . I had never seen a house like the Lathrup Mansion as we called it. Today with the Mc Mansions and Mega Mansions that abound it did not impress my kids when I took them by the house except to say it was spooky.

AS FOR THE RACIST PART I recall going to the Lathrup Post Office as a 17 year old and the clerk said to me there goes MS Lathrup on her bike [must been the daughter] back when the Lathrups were in charge YOUR KIND WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED HERE !

Of course I had no idea what she meant . Look at my name lol. I thought she must mean my long hair like every other kid in the 70s but heck by then even my brush cut Dad had sideburns lol.

OF COURSE like many ignorant people she assumed I was a JEW . In fact one of the top Nazi has my same name. A lot of German names are Jewish or vice versa .

Coming from an area where many where German desent and only one Jewish family lived names like Berchold, Swartzh , Dietch , and names ending in BERG were common.

Long story short she was well known as ANTI SEMETIC and of course hated BLACKS also but I am sure felt them as a lesser threat because Blacks were no where near the area in the 50s 60s and well into the 1970s.
Why who knows her religius upbringing ? Competition from Jews in the business world ?

By the way I knew a Brant Driscoll is part of the Lathrup Dyanasty .

we moved to 17285 san rosa when i was in 5th grade southfield rd was just being rebuilt and we used to go out on the new pavement and play when the work crews had left for the day. there was a steel barricade at the end of our street, to cut off the people from southfield, i thought that was strange. i had a paper route over by :"house in the woods" and yes, it was thought to be a scarey place, you would not go there even on a double dare! im sure all that was unfounded, but thats what us kids thought. the homes back there were all so grand and unique, not like the mc mansions of today. i hope the area will survive, and not fall the way of rosedale park, and other grand neighborhoods. of the detroit area

My family lived in Lathrup for about 15 years and I worked with Dave Driscoll for 2.5 years at Southfield Athletic Club (SAC)kitchen. I've never known or met a more well adjusted, hard working, genuine all around nice guy with a heart of gold. My own opinion is that the stories surrounding the Louise Lathrup house was a bunch of made up legend to fit the house. Sorry to hear it had a fire

I was a friend of Dana Dondero and spent quite a bit of time in the home. At the time I was completely in awe of the architectural detail of the home, even as a young teen. I have since some to realize that plaster work and wood work that flowed through the house is rarely seen except for historical homes, we do not have the craftsman here as they did at the turn od the century with immigrants bringing thier unique skills to this country. I find it so sad that this community that I grew up in with all it's resources could not find it in themselves to save this treasure.

I have to reply to this. We moves to Lathrup village in 1969 having purchased a home in 1968. My parent looked everywhere, Grosse pointe, Bloomfield hills, Birmingham. However when they married in the late fifties they went to seek out a home in Lathrup and my mother is italian and my father is of Scottish, English and welsh ancestry. My father is actually darker than my mother because she is from northern Italy where they are fair. They were told they would not be happy there and they would not be able to find a home, in the end they were told they were not the right type of people. She was a little nuts!
