Odds of winning scratch-off jackpot may be higher than you think

Full story: WISH-TV 8 Indiana News

Buying a scratch-off lottery ticket is a gamble. But what if it turned out, the odds of winning the jackpot were actually zero because the big prize had already been won and the tickets remained on sale anyway.

Haha, The Hoosier Lottery acting like they are taking the high road. But the only reason they pull them is because they got sued a few years back!! They didn't want to pull them, and they fought hard.

that is why scratch off are a "suckers bet". You never know if the big prize has been won. You can't know. Lotto supposedly picks it's winner after the fact. Truth be told either one is so easy to rig and probably is. Caveat Emptor

Why does it take three weeks to pull the tickets? All they have to do is send a message to all retail locations on their lotto machines...it could be done instantly.

This does happen. In April I was in Washington D.C. I decided to buy a $5.00 SCRATCH-OFF with the top prize being $40,000. Guess what???????
It's all a gamble. Sometime you win, sometime you lose. I call it pure luck.

Really...the Hoosier lottery pulls the tickets once the top prize is won? I remember, three years ago, a small mom & pop store near my home had a sign in their front window proclaiming that the top prize of a particular Hoosier scratch off ticket had been purchased in their store. That ticket was still available for quite some time later. I remember it because I had acutally thought about buying that particular ticket from that store just prior to that sign being posted. Heck, I could have won that $25,000 LOL but I didn't buy one because I wanted my dollar more. I laughed while seeing that the ticket was still made available at that small store and other stores long after the top prize had been won.

Not to get off subject; however, I believe that famous showman, P.T. Barnum coined that phrase.

To tell me that in this day of buying tickets that are computer generated takes 3 weeks is a laugh,
The same computer that makes the lottery ticket when you buy a lotto ticket can tell every console in the state at the same time that a scratch off ticket game has been won and to remove said tickets from the store racks A program can be made to do this . even dumb me who can't operate a computer very well. let alone make such program. it can be done .
I do how ever think the lotto people are on the right trock by pulling the game ,

Once I saw on a documentary on how crooked the lotteries are and I have never bought another ticket. It's like throwing cash in the trash.

Has anyone else noticed that the number of winning tickets has drastically been reduced since it became privatized and Mitch Daniels got in office?
IT IS A PROFIT BUSINESS NOW!!!!But not for the suckers who buy the tickets. Keep feeding private companies.

Now don't be stupid. Lottery scratch-offs aren't going to be a winning bet for the consumer. I blame the dumb people that waste their money on them. So even if private companies are running the lottery, they wouldn't be in business if people wouldn't waste their money on them. So, it's more like the consumer is the sucker. They don't have to buy them.

On september 28th, 2006 a man from my home town in Burkburnett, Texas experienced the feeling of winning BIG on a Deal or No Deal Scratch off. He without a doubt deserved it more than anyone in my hometown. He was headed to work on morning and stopped to cash in a scratch off he had won $5 dollars and purchased a deal or no deal scratch off and scrathed everything that was supposed to be scratched off and come to find out he won the $1,000,000 GRAND PRIZE. This man has diabetes and bad kidneys and had just received full custody of his 3 special needs grand children and was worried about his income. I think this comes to show that God was looking out for this gentleman and it happens to the best of us. God Bless you John Beard. The odds are one big lie. For instance 1 winner out of four is more like no winner out of ten tickets.

Lol... you cant/wont win if you dont play. I love to gamble , scratch offs are my weakness! Fortunatly last year i had won $500 on $20 goldrush 30 times in that year ..yes i counted! Shortly after that i had purchased 4 $5 monopoly tickets and won $10000.. 4months later i bout 4 $20 monopolys and won $500double..so 1000.. theres proof that theyre are winners out there for all you non-believers! Was i just lucky? Hmm maybe.. do i still play most def! It is a rush .. and the feeling of spending $10or $20 dollars to win $500 or more its euphoric! Dont get me wrong either, not every ticket or time you play will you win.. but thats part of the game.. its a risk you choose to take.. and the way i look at it , if you have the $$ and its something you want to play even for fun .. do it/lifes too short to not take risks :-) have fun with it but be responsible.. extremely addictive esp when you do win!
Oh and ps... as for the odds of the tickets .. it only makes sense to buy the higher amount of tickets -such as $20 tickets you will most likely win your$$ back if not more ! One thing i learned from the store clerk the day i won 10000 .. stay on the same ticket,, if there is no winners in the ones youve scratched.. there will prob be a big winner .. just what i did... and boom works everytime :-)

They should just get rid of them all together. Scratch offs and the lottery are just a scam and waste of money completely pointless. The government doesn't do shit with that money like they say they do. I'm sure none of it goes to education like it's supposed to. My local school has lost a lot of it's budget but more idiots buy those stupid cardboard cards then ever before.
