We need help!!
Franklin County will not pick children up for school on Benson Valley Road.
The School Bus Training has been using Benson Valley Road for years to TRAIN their bus drivers. Now They refuse to pick the kids up because they say the Road is Dangerous!
I know for a fact that they have picked kids up and taken them to school for years on this road and now they refuse to pick up the kids.
The Railroad called Transportation Dept. and agreed to do anything they needed to assist in making the road safer so the kids could get picked up and the
Bus Transportation said "NO THANKS"

IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEA'S ON WHAT TO DO NEXT TO GET THESE KIDS PICKED UP PLEASE ADVISE!

“Never stop learning.”

You can check with city/county ordinances to see if this situation is covered.

You can also try the school board about this. Ask what the new dangers of Benson Valley Road are now that have not been there in the past. Find out how those dangers can be addressed and rectified.

Find out if these are inexperienced bus drivers and if they are, request a driver with more experience.

The decision may be left up to the drivers about the safety of the road. An inspection by a qualified road engineer should settle the question of safety and hazards.

Good luck.

This is the same situation my sister has encountered on Mt. Vernon Road. Even though Owen County Schools has a bus that turns around in her driveway, my nephew has to be driven several miles (into Peaks Mill) to catch the Franklin County bus in the mornings. He rides the bus home in the afternoon. How can a road be deemed unsafe to travel on in the mornings, but ok in the afternoons? What about one school district deeming a road "unsafe" while one in a neighboring county doesn't have a problem traveling the SAME ROAD? We pay our fair share of taxes, doesn't that include providing transportation to and from school for our children? I say YES!! I myself had to deal with this situation years ago when my children attended Shelby County Schools. I resolved the situation by contacting my school board members, the Superintendant of Public Education, my children's bus driver, my local State Representative and Senator, and finally the local newspaper. Turns out I wasn't the only one dealing with this situation and we showed up in NUMBERS at the next School Board Meeting. Be sure to throughly re-read the phamplet regarding riding the school bus (the one sent home at the beginning of the school year.) In my situation the phamplet stated that ALL students were to be picked up and dropped off at THEIR RESIDENCE or designated bus stop (NOT several miles away. I argued this point until they were sick of hearing from me lol. After calling the school board members onto the carpet over this statement the situation was finally resolved. Hope this helps. Good luck getting your situation resolved.

I contacted LEX18 regarding this situation and Jennifer Hoff contacted Mark Watson, Transportation Director, and he stated the road was too windy, curvy, and has railroad tracks with blind spots. He offered to take me on a drive to show me the dangerous spots. I have asked Jennifer Hoff from LEX 18 to go with me. My husband has driven a tractor-trailer on this road for ten years and has NEVER had a close call or problem with the road or tracks. Charlie Preston, who is under Mark Watson, when asked if a bus has been hit by a train in Franklin County, said No. Approximately six years ago, this was not an issue and the bus did go down Benson Valley Road and turned around in our driveway. I think the reason why they do not want to drive to my house is because they do not want to spend the extra money to drive the two and half miles. They are just using the statement of it being a safety issue to shut me up. NOT WORKING!

Once again, frustration and aggrevation as to why they will not go down Benson Valley Road. If Charley is not under Mark Watson, who is his supervisor? I am not done with this issue.

A whole bus load of children shouldn't be endangered just so one parent doesn't have to drive her kid to school or at least to meet the bus. YOU chose to live there now deal with it! If you work it shouldn't be a problem. If you don't work don't expect people who do to foot the bill and endanger their children for someone who doesn't!!! Since your truck driver hubby doesn't have a problem with the road it shouldn't be too hard for you to navigate it either. Let HIM take his kid to school or the bus if you're sleeping in! Just because you pay taxes doesn't make ok for you to force other children to be in danger. There IS at least one blind spot at a RR crossing on that road. Also all those tractor trailor and dump truck drivers drive way too fast and take up way too much room on that road. Traffic has to cross those tracks THREE TIMES EACH WAY. It IS dangerous and I totally agree that children should NOT be subjected to having to be transported on it.

Almost forgot, it's not only the RR tracks that make that road so dangerous. The School Board needs to contact the KSP and get statistics regarding the number of accidents involving deer on that road. It's way higher than most roads in Franklin County!

You are a piece of work. There is a family needing transportation for their children to attend school and you want to demean her for it. The School Bus has picked children up on that road for years and there was absolutely no accidents (trains or deers)
so I think she has a point "must be the money" or "inexperienced bus drivers"
As a community we should be trying to help these parents figure out a way to get their children to school by way of Public Transportation 'SO THE PARENTS CAN GO BACK TO WORK"
Or maybe you would like to see another family loose their jobs and have to get on Government Assistance.

JUST SAYING..........
LEND THY NEIGHBOR A HELPING HAND OR SOME GOOD ADVISE OR

If she's working she ought to be able to get her kid to work. Or supposedly her hubby works. Why can't he take 'em? I DO NOT think a whole bus load of children ought to be endangered just to accomodate one family that chooses to live on a dangerous road. Many things have gone on for "many years" that have since been rightfully deemed dangerous or wrong in recent times. Surely the people who make these decisions are more knowledgable than you or I. Personally I know that road well (when was the last time you drove on it? or do you even know where it is?) and I agree ~ it is DANGEROUS, especially when childrens lives are being risked. If she want to risk the lives of her children by living on a dangerous road that's her choice and her problem. I wouldn't allow my kids to ride a bus on that road. I would drive them myself.

You sound so stupid. All roads are dangerous, some more than other ones alot of money is spent training bus drivers, they pay taxes they need to ride the bus, another way to kick the man down, it's all about the money and did they raise the school tax rate this year? Give us the money but the hel with you small people,it's loke fighting the mafia.

From the former post on here in August that looked to have been removed it sounds as if the Bus Garage is ran by dictators or should I say dick heads, they seem to not care about the drivers or the feelings of the parents especially the special needs children. I am on the other side of the state looking in. Boss backwards is stupid son-a-v-bi*ch. Treat people right, being a bus driver is a HUGE responsability.

One in every bunch. Go find a trashy site to play on!

These people requesting help to get kids to school because school starts after they go to work and kids get out of school before they get off work which is the case with most of school kids parents.

Just Drove that road today to check out all the negative comments.
HELLO THAT ROAD IS BETTER THAN MANY ROADS IN FRANKFORT THAT I SEE BUSES ON EVERYDAY AND BETTER THAN SOME OF THE ROADS THAT HAVE SCHOOLS BUILT ON THEM!!!!!
Namely "devils hollow road" much worse than South Benson
and guess what I have seen many dead deer laying in the middle of Devils Hollow Road so what you got to say about that.
THINK THEY SHOULD MOVE THE SCHOOL BECAUSE A DEER MIGHT RUN OUT IN FRONT OF A BUS OR ANOTHER VEHICLE.

Get real everybody knows South Benson Road was repaved and it is now a Double Wide Road with plenty of room to drive a bus down to get NOT ONE FAMILY'S CHILDREN but a few school kids live down that road.
As I said before I drove down that road today and I never met one dump truck, or one tractor trailer. Not even a dead deer in the middle of the road, not even a train.
All I saw was the county working on the side of the road.

SO FROM WHERE I SITTING THE LADY MUST BE RIGHT
"in experience bus drivers or must be the money"

PUT YOURSELF IN THESE PEOPLES SHOES
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO DRIVE YOUR CHILDREN 2 TO 3 MILES EACH MORNING TO GET YOUR CHILD TO THE BUS STOP THEN RETURN HOME AND WAIT ANOTHER HOUR AND MAKE THE TRIP BACK TO THE BUS STOP TO GET THE OTHER AGE GROUP TO THE BUS STOP SO THE OTHER CHILD CAN GO TO SCHOOL THEN TURN AROUND AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY AND PICK THEM UP AT TWO DIFFERENT TIME ALL OVER AGAIN. ALL THE WHILE BOTH PARENTS TRYING TO HOLD ONTO A FULL TIME JOB!(yeah I see that happening for real)
Hey boss I have to leave and pick my children up at the bus stop and drive them home because it is 2 to 3 miles from our house and my children are in elementary and middle school so they are to young to be out walking alone on any street. And Boss I have to do this every school day so please bear with me on this.
(yeah I can see a boss letting their employees do that everyday)

If you are ok with that then you probably don't have children in school. I don't have children in school but I sure pay my share of school taxes on every monthly bill and property taxes and I think those tax dollars should get every child in American A Ride to School On the SCHOOL BUS.

GetReal, there are several Benson's. One runs from US 60 all the way to St Johns Road. The part that runs from Devils Hollow to St John's is especially dangerous.
Honestly, I wasn't paying attention to which Benson they were referring to so I am just mouthing.
