A Franklin County man died after his bulldozer flipped into the Kentucky River north of Frankfort around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
Emergency crews found the body of Ren Heard, 61, in the cab of a yellow bulldozer when they arrived at the scene near Steele Branch Road, said Deron Rambo, county emergency management director.
Heard was digging a waterline trench on his nursery, Lake Tree Farm, by the Kentucky River, Rambo said.
“The bank may have given way and caused the bulldozer to flip upside down into the river,” Rambo said.
Boaters saw Heard working when they floated by and then saw parts of the front loader sticking out of the water. They called authorities.
Heard was unable to get out of the cab on his own before he drowned, Sheriff Pat Melton said.
It took emergency crews about two hours to recover the body with a wrecker, Rambo said.
Coroner Will Harrod said he did not know the exact cause of death, but reports from the scene say there is a good chance he drowned.
Heard grew up on a large family farm in Virginia and started it on a path to organic crops in 1971, according to the website for the Field to Fork Festival in Garrard County.
He planted his first organic tree farm in West Virginia in 1975, the site says. As the first USDA certified organic ornamental tree farm, Lake Tree Farm developed unique techniques and equipment to grow organic tree crops on a commercial scale.
Heard expanded his business when he moved to Franklin County from Bedford, Va., in 2010.
He was the CEO of Lake Tree Farm, LLC, a family owned wholesale organic tree farm and nursery, with locations in Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee.
In an interview with The State Journal at his farm last year he shared his excitement about expanding to Franklin County and said he hoped to inspire others to grow and buy organic plants and trees. He was also pioneering a new form of greenhouse on his Steele Branch farm. He had hoped to patent the design

The tractor did not flip over on him. The accident did involve farm equipment however. I will not go into details on here nor will I post his name. There should be something in the state journal concerning this accident. Its pretty rotten to put this on topix..let this man rest in peace and let his family grieve!

Fact, the state journal had the story locked. All the person wanted to know was a name. Not the details. This site is an informational site. unfortunately some uses it to slander.
Nobody will say an ill word about this farmer. The post wasn't set up for it to trash him.

He was riding on a piece of machinery with a cab. The machinery flipped in the river and sadly he drowned. He could not make it out in time.
