basketball hoop in street

Our neighbor recently put up a hoop for his kids. It's one of those portable ones and it's sticking out in the street. He told the other kids including ours they are not allowed to play with it. Fine. But now he is trying to stop them from even playing under it. He told my kids they can't ride their bikes, toss a ball or anything else near the hoop. Basically, if they play on the street near the hoop he comes out and yells at them. We live right across from them. He claims his side of the street in front of his property is his and they are not allowed to play there, period. Isn't that ridiculous?

yep, it is. I wonder if there isn't a city ordinance against playing in the street ? Anyhow, why is he being such a jerk ? Is he normally a hateful neighbor ?

No the area in front of the house is called the easement and it is public property. That includes the lawn area between the sidewalk and street.

He can not stop the kids from playing under the goal, the road is public property, what you can do is complain that the goal is a problem and have him remove it, if other kids are not allowed to play then his kids aren't either.

Complain to city or county depending on where you live. The police, sheriff dept or planning and zoning should be able to help.

The don't own the road and if others can't use it it needs to be moved when not in use.

I usually don't like to cause trouble. I'll wait and see what he does when they play out again. I'll keep my camera handy so I have it on tape. I told them to tell him their parents said the street is for all and to call the sheriff, if he disagrees. If he yells profanities again, we'll have it on tape.

Thing is, his kids don't even like playing alone. They will have to, if he alienates all their friends.

We have a similar issue in our Coolbrook neighborhood. Only it isn't the parents causing the problem so much as the disrespectful kids playing there. They do not move out of the road for traffic and have been known to shout profanities at cars as they pass. I sat in the road one day waiting for them to move out of the middle of the street. THey moved over just enough for me to pass and then I was called a Dumb Bitch by one of them when I didn't immediately pass, what the little shit failed to realize? There was another car trying to get by from the other end of the street! I swore if it happened again I was calling the law. I just leave from the other end of the road now. What happened to the days when I was growing up, not that long ago where if you disrespected an adult they would drag your butt home for a good butt kicking? Too bad now a days you can't even discipline your own kids without Social Services being called!
