I was at Walmart today and people were outside collecting money for a 14 year old girl with cancer. I asked for a name. They told me Michelle but would not give last name. Does anyone know if this is legit? I wouldn't mind giving to the cause if I only knew.

I'm not sure if this is true or not. I have a child with cancer, and when my child was diagnosed, we had help from the community and churches. One church held a benefit concert for my child. As far as standing outside of Wal-Mart asking for money?? I personally have not done that. It is one thing to accept the help of your fellow neighbors in a trying time like that, but it is another to go out of your way to get money. My child also receives a SSI check, because I am a single parent. There are other options to making sure your child is taken care of. Was the child there? Were there pictures of the child or anything that would let people know that its for real??

I hope your child is doing well and I'm glad the community and churches helped you. God knows that would be a trying time for anyone and the moral support alone would be priceless. It's just that, this day in time, there are so many scams going on... You could spend a whole paycheck before you actually get into Walmart these days -- people holding up signs for their particular struggles. I know times are hard but I want to help the people who are truely trying to help themselves. Anyway, off my soapbox... The child was not there, no picture, etc. I didn't have cash and asked for a name so I could look it up on the internet and give that way. They gave me first name only -- Michelle -- and said they don't share last names. Said if I searched for a 14 year old girl with lymph node cancer named Michelle, I'd probably find her that way. Guess what, no hits. But who would use such a terrible thing to dupe someone?

My child is doing better than ever. She has been taking treatments since 2008, and is scheduled to end them this June, and we couldn't be happier! The truth is, you would be surprised at the things people will do for money. I knew of a child in my hometown that was murdered(God rest her soul, her family put jars in local stores to raise money for the funeral expenses, and one of the child's OWN (estranged) family members went to the stores and collected the money. Needless to say they took off with it, got caught, and charged. It is really sad how people can take advantage of such situations. I personally would think that if someone needed money to help this child, they would have no problem "using a last name". The reason I ask is because there are just a few children in Frankfort that have cancer, and my child gets treated at the Pediatrics Hemotology/Oncology clinic at UK clinic, and if this child were receiving treatments there, I would remember them. The whole clinic is considered family to everyone that goes there. I do not recall a 14 year old. Did they tell you what kind of cancer? My daughter had cancer in the lymph nodes, and it is called ALL (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia). As sad as I am to say it, you probably did a smart thing by not giving them money.

If I'm not mistaken, a person has to have permission from WalMart to collect money from its patrons. If I were you, I'd go to the management and ask about it.
When our church wanted to do a car wash for our youth group, we had to apply in advance and wait for confirmation before we could do it. We had to provide tax info and what the money was to be used for. The kids got permission, but it took a week or more to get it. That was five years ago.
I'd really check into it if I were you.

if they're doing it at walmart i'm sure its legit. they usually look into this stuff before allowing people to do this kind of thing. its not as easy as people would expect

Unless they just stood out there without asking and just waited for an employee to tell them to leave. I watched some one giving puppies away one day be told to leave since they didn't have permission. She said that was fine since they'd been there all day already any way. When this type of situation pops up, ask the CSM or another employee at Wal-Mart if they are legitimate and have permission to be there. If they do, then they had to prove why they're there. If not, don't give any thing!

most cancer centers will not turn away a person. i agree with idk. if it was legitimate they would not have had a problem giving a last name or any other info requested. there are a lot of people that would do anything to get money to get out of working. for example, there are people that take advantage of people when they lose a loved one - they EXPECT people to give them money. SAD!

Your use of shock value is a pathetic attempt for attention. You must be pretty desperate for it.
