Frankfort Falls Short on Stellar

FRANKFORT, Ind.(WLFI)- An effort for an area city to get millions of dollars in state grants falls short.
Frankfort city leaders found out Friday that they will not be a state-designated "Stellar Community" and will miss out on $18.7 million in grants.
McBarnes says that Bedford and Richmond were announced as the winners Friday. The Stellar Communities Awards gives communities millions of dollars of grant money to work on specific projects and spruce up the community.
Some of the projects on Frankfort's to-do list included a senior living facility, a canal near Prairie Creek, and an amphitheater. Mayor McBarnes said the city will just have to wait a little longer to see those projects completed.
"This is not the end. The Stellar Communities funding program would have helped us get them done in three years. Now, those same projects will get done in 8-10 years and that's okay," said McBarnes.
In March, Frankfort was announced as one of six finalists. In May, the community hosted a site visit for state officials.
McBarnes says Friday was a hard day for community members who worked so hard to become a "Stellar Community." He said the city will still move forward.
