Me and a friend that's lives in Mokena heard the noise as well at about 3am. We still have no idea what it was.

My husband and mother and I were startled out of a deep sleep with the windows rattling. Between 1:40 and 2:30 we heard 4 loud booms. Why, isn't something being said about this? It even set off car alarms on the street.

I heard something here as well, but earlier 9:30, sounded like something hit the roof.

I'm sure it was transformers from power lines. The ice has been falling from roofs/trees and onto houses also, causing a loud boom. Usually, when a transformer goes, it lights up the sky with green. I know with the wind this has been happening alot. There is no reason to report it on the news as this stuff happens all the time.

I too heard 4 loud booms. It sounded like something hit the roof. One sounded like wood snapping, I did look into the attic and everything was fine. I have heard transformers make the exploding niose and I don't think a power transformer would sound like that inside. Any other ideas?

I live in Matteson, IL, and I heard the load noise at least 3 times myself. It was extremely un-nerving.

Me and my family heard 4 or 5 loud booms. It sounded like something hitting the roof of the house. I don't think it was ice or transformers. There are no trees around my house or wires. It is like something falling from the sky. It was the wierdest thing.

Ah Robert - while I agree there are sounds that happen all the time and don't need to be reported -- these are loud booms heard for MILES. Something different happened. I have been an electrician for 30+ years and when a transformer goes it can cause a loud boom, but lights go out in the immeduate vicinity. With 2-4 booms being reported we'd all be in the dark.
We heard lots of fire/police activity around midnight - perhaps centerd around I80 and Harlem... Could there have been some sort of fire/explosions here??

Well I have confirmed this as far south as Frankfort to 30 miles north in Oak Lawn, East of Lansing to 30 miles West to Lockport. Est. Time of first one was 12:40 am than a repeat at 2:40 am. That had to be one hell of a transformer! Still nothing in the news...

9000 people with out power in s.subs must have been a few transformers!

These "booms" were due to the extremely fast drop in temperature. It's simply the cold air making roofs, the ice on the roofs and whatever else contract.

Hey Billy, you've recently accused me of not getting out much on a different blog. Let me quote a few of your posts from here.

"I Have talked to people in Frankfort, Oak Forest, Tinely Park and Oak lawn. Everyone I talked to hear a loud boom around 12:40 am and another around 3:00 am CST. Not a think has been reported on the news!!!"

You're going on like it's a freaking conspiracy or something and it's just a natural phenomenon. Oh and your transformer comment, that was great. Like tranformers were blowing up in loud booms all over, all at once, and yet most people still had power.

Seriously, maybe it's you that needs to get out.

For the rest of you, I completely understand not realizing what it was. We don't get to experience it all that often.

OK Voice I could see what you are saying -- except -- How does teh sound travel so far?? I can see if what I heard was at my house and someone else heard it some other time at their place. But, as a "for instance" I heard one at 4:30 Am and my daughter did too.... Except that she lives 3 miles away and was outside at the time and heard it in the sky -- not coming from a house....

I heard and felt the booms and I live in NW Indiana. I thought something hit my house. I looked in the morning and didn't find anything that would have caused the noises I heard. I have no powerlines or tree by my house so it wasn't that. Maybe we should call UFO hunters.

I don't buy the wires crossing stuff, sure my power blinked a few time that night, but noise never happened at the same time and I don't have power lines over my house. The noise definetly came from above.
