In about 1956 when the Chamber of Commerce organized in Frankenmuth, some merchants were reluctant to join or to participate in the early Bavarian Festivals. Their reason simply was that they were afraid that Frankenmuth would become a "bedroom community". I doubt very much whether an addition of Walmart would create such a response. The tremendous growth of this small town into one of the biggest tourist attractions is the dedication and forsight of William Zehnder Jr. and Eddie Zehnder. Others were Wallace (Wally) Bronner and last but not least a banker, Otto Trinklein who bankrolled the hotel projects with a debt that was out of this world at that time. This old duffer is proud to have been a witness to their beginnings.
