This is indeed a tragedy. Were there no smole alarms to alert these people? I think landlords should be required to have smoke alarms in apartments. and they should do regular inspections on their apartments to make sure they are working. My symapthy to the family.

Lets not go there about who is responsible for Fire Alarms it just a huge war on here! People need to take their own responsibility not rely on someone else. Sorry!

Fact is 2 precious children are lost and looking back can't save them.

May God Bless the family and provide them with strengh to get through this aweful difficult time!

I don't know about your area, but here in my part of MD, all apartments are required to have working smoke detectors. There ARE inspections, but in the meantime I'm sure plenty of people take out the batteries.... At any rate - this fire is a terrible tragedy, my prayers are with the young victims. I also feel badly for the firefighters who were on the scene; I don't care how "big and bad" they are, anything that involves kids, most firefighters are deeply affected.

I agree with you about the Firefighters Pachacutec, it takes something from you seeing that. My 18 year step-son is a firefighter & we worry about the day he see's that. He's already been present at the death of a young man who was Electrocuted. But kids - totally different.

God Bless!

Would you believe that some people remove the battery to run their tv remote? Time to make sure that Fire/Smoke, CO, and CO2 alarms are hard wired so that batteries are not needed. If the batteries are removed charge somebody, these kids did not have to die. Remember change ALL your batteries9alarms, remotes, clocks etc on the first day of April and the first of October(our stupid congress changed daylight savings time)GOD bless the children.

Why do people jump to conclusions? The article did not say that the smoke detectors weren't working. It also didn't say that the batteries had been removed. It most certainly did not say that the residents cared more about their TV remote than the lives of their children!!!

Sometimes, even when a smoke alarm goes off, there is little time to evacuate. This was a second floor apartment. Perhaps the poor children had smoke inhalation issues. The parents probably survived because they had stronger lungs/bodies.

Why is wrong with you doomsayers???

My heart bleeds for these children and their families. And for the the rescue workers who found them and were, unfortunately, unable to save them. How sad and tragic...

I was a volunteer firefighter/EMT for some years and have seen some extremely grisly things; I can appreciate what your son is going through. A person learns really quickly if they can do that kind of job or not... esp. if kids are involved in the fires/accidents. If they feel they need it, hopefully there's counselling for the firefighters and other emergency workers who responded to this call.
