A recent cancer survivor from our area decided he needed to do something special to support the American Cancer Society. He began training for a walk of HUGE proportion which would incorporate 500 miles. He trained and gathered sponsors for his journey and left our small town almost 3 weeks ago. He crossed the state of Kentucky and into Indiana and was almost through the whole state of Indiana when he hit a SAD PLACE, THE PHEASANT COUNTRY INN. He had made reservations weeks in advance as he had to map out his journey in great detail. DUE TO THE FACT THAT HE WAS WALKING!!!! When he made it to FOWLER INDIANA he called the PHEASANT COUNTRY INN for final directions. THEY HAD THE NERVE TO TELL A GUY, A CANCER SURVIVOR, THAT HAD WALKED 400 +/- MILES OF A 500 MILE JOURNEY, THAT HE HAD NO ROOM FOR THE NIGHT. EVEN AFTER THE RESERVATIONS HAD BEEN MADE WEEKS AHEAD OF TIME. THEY HAD THE AMDIDIGATED GAUL TO TELL HIM THAT THERE WAS ANOTHER TOWN 14 MORE MILES UP THE ROAD THAT WAS CHEAPER AND HE COULD STAY THERE. EVEN AFTER HE HAD WALKED IN THE COLD RAIN ALL DAY LONG??? THEY KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING WELL IN ADVANCE AND THEY KNEW THE REASON BEHIND IT. YET, SINCE HE WAS WALKING, INSTEAD OF DRIVING, HE WAS TURNED AWAY. THIS REMINDS ME OF A STORY THAT HAS BEEN TOLD MANY MANY TIMES ABOUT SOMEONE BEING TURNED AWAY FROM A FANCY INN BECAUSE OF THE WAY THEY LOOKED. THANK GOODNESS THAT TURNED OUT BETTER THAN THIS DID..LIKE THE TITLE IMPLIES, PHEASANT COUNTRY INN IS A SAD SAD PLACE, TO BE CALLED A PLACE TO COME IN OUT OF THE STORM!!!!!!!

Sam Neace, the man making this trip, is a good friend of mine. And when I heard about this, my heart sank to know that such callous people still exist in this world.

That's not an indictment of any of the people of Fowler in general. I have many family members in northern Indiana, and everyone I've ever encountered in the state has been nothing short of wonderful. But this innkeeper, she needs to really open her eyes here. Maybe you should let this establishment know what horrible people they are, and for giving good, honest, hard working Indianans a bad name.

The innkeeper you speak of is not a horrible person, but a cautious person brought on by previous negative experiences. This happens to be one of the worse in media exploitation to ruin her reputation. If anyone is interested to learn the truth then contact the innkeeper at: pheasantcountryinn@yahoo.com. Documentation will be provided to those who are interested to draw their own conclusion. Firstly, a cancer survivor to solely walk 500 miles to Chicago to schedule an appointment to be on the Oprah Winfrey Show without an escort and without the local chapter of the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life chapter to endorse this walk and to supervise it is unbelieveable.

In reference to 1MadHunter's complaint the following facts are noted. Firstly, reservations for Sam Neace made by his mother, which the caller Id gave another name and phone number than what was given. Secondly, the phone call was made a day inadvance as documented on caller ID and NOT 3 weeks in advance. Thirdly, Sam called on the day he was to arrive saying that, since it was raining he was staying in Lafayette for the night. Sam asked if there was a room available for the next evening and what time does the inn close. When responding to his query, his cell phone went dead and I did not know if he hung-up or if connection was lost. In any event Sam did not call back. Fourthly, thinking it was a prank due to the inconsistences that took place led the innkeeper to view it to be not viable. Fifthly,
most Chartiable Organizations have staffers who call requesting reduced rates or a donation. This was not the case as the runner's mother called and I had no proof that indeed she was the mother of one Sam Neace. The next day was a day of enlightenment. Dozens of phone calls and emails from friends of Sam's scorning me and some wanting to hear my side of the story. When told my side of the story many apologized for making a rash judgment. Glad to hear that Sam made it to Chicago safely to tell his story and promote his book about his trails and tribulations of surviving cancer to Oprah Winfrey and her audience. World-wide publicity will certainly generate a feeling of commraderie and donations to Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, which was Sam's objective. It truly was a long and wearisome lone 500 mile walk without back-up supportback on his journey.
