A recent cancer survivor from our area decided he needed to do something special to support the American Cancer Society. He began training for a walk of HUGE proportion which would incorporate 500 miles. He trained and gathered sponsors for his journey and left our small town almost 3 weeks ago. He crossed the state of Kentucky and into Indiana and was almost through the whole state of Indiana when he hit a SAD PLACE, THE PHEASANT COUNTRY INN. He had made reservations weeks in advance as he had to map out his journey in great detail. DUE TO THE FACT THAT HE WAS WALKING!!!! When he made it to FOWLER INDIANA he called the PHEASANT COUNTRY INN for final directions. THEY HAD THE NERVE TO TELL A GUY, A CANCER SURVIVOR, THAT HAD WALKED 400 +/- MILES OF A 500 MILE JOURNEY, THAT HE HAD NO ROOM FOR THE NIGHT. EVEN AFTER THE RESERVATIONS HAD BEEN MADE WEEKS AHEAD OF TIME. THEY HAD THE AMDIDIGATED GAUL TO TELL HIM THAT THERE WAS ANOTHER TOWN 14 MORE MILES UP THE ROAD THAT WAS CHEAPER AND HE COULD STAY THERE. EVEN AFTER HE HAD WALKED IN THE COLD RAIN ALL DAY LONG??? THEY KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING WELL IN ADVANCE AND THEY KNEW THE REASON BEHIND IT. YET, SINCE HE WAS WALKING, INSTEAD OF DRIVING, HE WAS TURNED AWAY. THIS REMINDS ME OF A STORY THAT HAS BEEN TOLD MANY MANY TIMES ABOUT SOMEONE BEING TURNED AWAY FROM A FANCY INN BECAUSE OF THE WAY THEY LOOKED. THANK GOODNESS THAT TURNED OUT BETTER THAN THIS DID..LIKE THE TITLE IMPLIES, PHEASANT COUNTRY INN IS A SAD SAD PLACE, TO BE CALLED A PLACE TO COME IN OUT OF THE STORM!!!!!!!

The innkeeper you speak of is not a horrible person, but a cautious person brought on by previous negative experiences. This happens to be one of the worse in media exploitation to ruin her reputation. If anyone is interested to learn the truth then contact the innkeeper at: pheasantcountryinn@yahoo.com. Documentation will be provided to those who are interested to draw their own conclusion. Firstly, a cancer survivor to solely walk 500 miles to Chicago to schedule an appointment to be on the Oprah Winfrey Show without an escort and without the local chapter of the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life chapter to endorse this walk and to supervise it is unbelieveable.

In reference to 1MadHunter's complaint the following facts are noted. Firstly, reservations for Sam Neace made by his mother, which the caller Id gave another name and phone number than what was given. Secondly, the phone call was made a day inadvance as documented on caller ID and NOT 3 weeks in advance. Thirdly, Sam called on the day he was to arrive saying that, since it was raining he was staying in Lafayette for the night. Sam asked if there was a room available for the next evening and what time does the inn close. When responding to his query, his cell phone went dead and I did not know if he hung-up or if connection was lost. In any event Sam did not call back. Fourthly, thinking it was a prank due to the inconsistences that took place led the innkeeper to view it to be not viable. Fifthly,
most Chartiable Organizations have staffers who call requesting reduced rates or a donation. This was not the case as the runner's mother called and I had no proof that indeed she was the mother of one Sam Neace. The next day was a day of enlightenment. Dozens of phone calls and emails from friends of Sam's scorning me and some wanting to hear my side of the story. When told my side of the story many apologized for making a rash judgment. Glad to hear that Sam made it to Chicago safely to tell his story and promote his book about his trails and tribulations of surviving cancer to Oprah Winfrey and her audience. World-wide publicity will certainly generate a feeling of commraderie and donations to Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, which was Sam's objective. It truly was a long and wearisome lone 500 mile walk without back-up supportback on his journey.

What a sad story 1MadHunter tells. And it does read like an indictment of everyone in the town of Fowler. Based on my experience, I don't doubt any stories of callous, heartless business practices by some of those who own businesses there. Some of them are truly evil.
And, dude, it's just freakin RUDE to call out the whole TOWN by putting it in ALL CAPS.
BUT if anyone involved with this cancer survivor's walk and situation had contacted the local cancer association or ANY of the local churches, they would have been overwhelmed with housing offers for this guy, and every other assistance he needed. The people of Fowler are, by and large, the epitome of midwestern hospitality and compassion, and I know that from personal experience, too. So, blame the Pheasant Inn people, and blame anyone else who knew of this guy's plight and didn't make a single phone call to one of the churches or ANYONE else in town.
Don't blame the town.
Oh, and if you want to get wise to the business people to avoid in Fowler, post a message here and I'll oblige. Some of them are great; some, I would not trust as far as I could throw them.

Lust4Life:
You and 1MadHunter must be related as you both sound alike.
I have tape recordings from messages on my answering machine and emails from all of you mad callers from Kentucky, who were prodded to contact me by your local radio station owned by a disturbed local official who hired Sam Neace as a DJ on his radio show. Any more of this hateful smearing and you will ALL be named in a Defamation Law Suite. Are you or Sam Nease related to anyone in Benton County?

Purdue47944: I have no idea who 1MadHunter is, and I seriously doubt we're related. I have no idea who Sam Nease is, I am not from Kentucky, nor am I a "mad caller." It's not MY local radio station, and before you start throwing around threats of lawsuits (or did your really mean a law SUITE?), you should be sure you are not defaming me with false accusations.
What, exactly, did I say that you object to? My defending the people of Fowler?(And yes, in answer to your question, I do have relatives in Benton County and have spent considerable time there.) I have had experiences that lead me to believe that there are at least two truly evil business owners in Fowler. Evil by anyone's definition.
You will note that I was DEFENDING the town of Fowler and merely asking that the original poster not criticize FOWLER INDIANA (in all caps) if he or she has a complaint -- legitimate or not -- with one business there. There is nothing in my post that remotely constitutes "hateful smearing."
Before you go making threats, you should at least make sure you are not engaging in defamation yourself. You should be much more careful about making accusations ("all of you mad callers") that are patently false and totally unsupportable.

Lust4Life,
I would like to know the names of the two evil business owners you speak of in Fowler. It will just be between you and me. I think I know who they are, as I have had negative experiences, as well. I welcome you to be MY guest at Pheasant Country Inn. My apologies to you in making this rash statement about you. I have been on the defensive for a long time. I have been struggling in this town for years. I came back to Fowler 20 years ago from Chicago, to be accessible to my aging parents. God, I miss them. Opened Pheasant Country Inn, as there was a need for lodging accommodations in Fowler. I enjoy meeting people of all walks of life, as I find them all interesting and have made some friends.
Peace be with you. I hope you respond.

The name on my caller ID was one, Gary D. Whitaker.
I googled and there are a number of Gary Whitaker's in Kentucky and also, in Indiana, as a matter of fact one 18 miles N.W. of Fowler, in Otterbein, IN. Gary Whitaker is a popular name. So, Sam Nease's mother from Hindman, KY., was using Gary Whitaker's phone. Who is Gary Whitaker?
I googled Sam Nease. Learned that Sam is running on the Republican ticket for Judge Executive. What is the job description of a Judge Executive? I've never heard of such a title. Sam "Killer" Neace is the creator, writer and host of WKCB Radio station in Knott County, KY. Several efforts have been organized by "fans" of the show to help achieve greater success for Killer Radio, including the, "Give Neace a Chance" campaign in which a petition was signed to make The Killer Neace, an everyday part of WKBC programming, as well as continuous mailings to the Howard Stern Show to convince Stern to lobby for Killer Radio to become a part of the programming with Siris Satellite Radio. This say's it all.
