Today, for the first time since the Civil War, Kinston, NC elected a Republican Mayor.. a YOUNG Republican Mayor. Could it be backlash against the Obama Justice Department, or did my fellow citizens finally vote their conscience instead of their Party. I will admit, I voted my Republican party line since there was only 1 candidate in line... I look forward to see how the Democrats that run the remainder of this city, will act now that their Seat of Power has been lost. Perhaps this is a start down the right path of Lower taxes, lower Utilities and especially racial reconciliation. It festers in this city like an open wound that everyone is trying to hide. Bring it out into the open. Let's face it head on. Let's ALL work together to make this city what it truly can be an ALL INCLUSIVE All American City. Congratulations to Mayor Elect Murphy... now, let's change some things.

Virginia and New Jersey both voted in Republican governors-and Atlanta is looking at the first white and a women no less in a runoff in December for Mayor...Way to go people.

The giant is awakening.

HOwever I do wonder if ACORN being out of the realm has improved voting.

Never did like that ACORN bunch.

Looks like the South may rise again.

there is an additional issue. plurality voting. St. Marys in Atlanta enacted a local law permitting "plurality, not majority". in 2005 they moved from majority vote to plurality vote. this enables someone with less than 51% of votes cast to win an election. I am told that this has never been challenged. this means that Tom Cyphers and myself are denied a run off election. what do you think about this situation?

I am not keen on the idea of Plurality Voting. I am also not keen on having 3-4 people running for the same position, because you will run into issues such as this when the votes get split all over the place and who is really the one the people want?

Is Deloughy the mayor St. Marys truly wanted? NO. He didn't get the majority vote. If the airport was the main issue to people, then about 1248 people voted against Deloughy. But those 1248 votes were split between Cyphers and Eskridge and Deloughy coasted in on the others. Same in the other races

Post - 876

Feller - 584

Rillo - 495

So in that one 1,079 were not for Post

Post 5

Morrissey - 758

Haney - 542

Williams - 428

970 against Morrissey

The only true cast was Post 6 with Howell and Weaver.

So no, St. Marys was dealt an injustice by its own making. Plurality voting is not the way to go, but also there needs to be 1 on 1 to keep it simple and fair

WAKE UP ST. MARYS!!!!

Sandy sound like you have a job to do.Always thought you were a great activist-go stir this up and try to get citizens to back you up especially those that voted!
You know spend some money; get a big billboard and copy the post that Pittsoff made-I really think many people would want this voting crap changed in ST.Marys-sounds like it is 'for the people'.
Thanks Pittsoff-great post!

This was brought up many times. I think the readers are ignorant on that subject since there was little comment. Plurality is the school boards best friend.

I think you would both get your butts kicked again. Move on. Have you call Mr. Post to offer you congrats? That to me is the civil thing to do. What sez Sandy?

Sandy, I'd be interested in more of the history of this 2005 born issue. Unfortunately, I was not very politcally active here at that time. By "in Atlanta" do you meant that it was state legislation? Would it require Council request to change or could the voting populous do it? Was it done as an elections cost savings? Was there any debate when it was done; if so what points were brought on both sides.

Well what if one conceded? Maybe Post should call both of them collectively and than them for running.

Sandy I agree with you and I believe the winner should have 51% of the votes cast. I hope you pursue this. I was not aware of this until this morning.

this is known as "home rule legislation". in other words, the city asks the state representative and the state senator to introduce legislation in Atlanta. then the legislative bodies approve them and then the governor signs it into law. i have more research to do. will update as info becomes available.
