The real reason the Second Amendment was ratified, and why it says "State" instead of "Country" (the Framers knew the difference - see the 10th Amendment), was to preserve the slave patrol militias in the southern states, which was necessary to get Virginia's vote. Founders Patrick Henry, George Mason, and James Madison were totally clear on that ... and we all should be too.

In the beginning, there were the militias. In the South, they were also called the "slave patrols," and they were regulated by the states.

Not every fatherless / motherless child is an "uneducated, welfare, addicted drug addict!" Sorry my child's father medication wasn't strong enough and or we are not far enough along in drug trials to cure cancer. You need to think before you speak. Pure ignorance often comes out on this board and just because you hear of a child without the other parent many have sacrificed their lives for you that are only in their 20's. Granted I have no government assistance but choose your words carefully. No child should ever be judged for the action of their parent anyway alive or deceased.

sad

Gene Rosen discovered six little children in his driveway one morning in December 2012. "We can't go back to school," one boy told Rosen. "Our teacher is dead." Rosen took them into his house, gave them food and toys to play with, and phoned their parents.

Since then, Rosen has received a torrent of anonymous phone calls and emails accusing him of lying, he told Salon. One email asked, "how are all those little students doing? You know, the ones that showed up at your house after the 'shooting.' What is the going rate for getting involved in a gov't sponsored hoax anyway?" Rosen has also been the subject of web pages and videos accusing him of fraud, and white supremacist blog posts attacking him as the "emotional Jewish guy."

He's being targeted by the Sandy Hook Truther movement, which "alleges that the entire shooting was a hoax of some kind," writes Alex Seitz-Wald in Salon. Many truthers believe that the massacre was faked - presumably by Democrats in government - in order to promote gun control.

"Sandy Hook Hoax" websites are thriving, and a truther video titled "The Sandy Hook Shooting: Fully Exposed" has been viewed over 6 million times on YouTube. The video purports to show evidence that the shooting never took place - the main evidence being that the Sandy Hook families seem "artificial" and insufficiently grief-stricken.

I tried to read the article that you linked to this topic with an open mind. I tried to see it from the author's viewpoint. However, when I got to the bottom and read the "use assault weapons to murder children" part, it was apparent that the author had tunnel vision when coming up with this "interpretation". Nothing more than a liberal conspiracy theory. Have you ever stopped to think that maybe, just maybe, our founders liked what we had going on in this young democracy, and wanted to protect it at all costs? Could it be that they felt compelled to protect what so many had died for?

Mother Jones Magazine
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2008/03/w...

"Last week at an American Constitution Society briefing on the Heller case, NAACP Legal Defense Fund president John Payton explained the ugly history behind the gun lobby's favorite amendment. "That the Second Amendment was the last bulwark against the tyranny of the federal government is false," he said. Instead, the "well-regulated militias" cited in the Constitution almost certainly referred to state militias that were used to suppress slave insurrections. Payton explained that the founders added the Second Amendment in part to reassure southern states, such as Virginia, that the federal government wouldn’t use its new power to disarm state militias as a backdoor way of abolishing slavery.

This is pretty well-documented history, thanks to the work of Roger Williams School of Law professor Carl T. Bogus. In a 1998 law-review article based on a close analysis of James Madison’s original writings, Bogus explained the South’s obsession with militias during the ratification fights over the Constitution.“The militia remained the principal means of protecting the social order and preserving white control over an enormous black population,” Bogus writes.“Anything that might weaken this system presented the gravest of threats.” He goes on to document how anti-Federalists Patrick Henry and George Mason used the fear of slave rebellions as a way of drumming up opposition to the Constitution and how Madison eventually deployed the promise of the Second Amendment to placate Virginians and win their support for ratification."

Before the Civil War and the Fourteenth Amendment, many states enacted laws that made it illegal for slaves and for free black people to possess firearms (unless they had their master’s permission or a government approval).[See list, with sources in law reviews, in Gran’pa Jack No. 4 ]

A. The Second Amendment did not protect black people then, because(1) it was understood to limit the federal government’s power only and (2) black people were not considered citizens whose rights deserved to be protected.[Dred Scott decision, 60 U.S. 393 (1857)(Judge Taney observed that if blacks had the privileges and immunities of citizenship, then they would be able to freely possess and carry arms ... unthinkable to Southern slave owners.)][Halbrook, pp. 98, 114-15]

B. The Second Amendment was designed by people who did not want to become slaves to their government, but they were unfortunately and tragically willing to permit private slavery in some states. Now that slavery is abolished, however, all citizens of all races should enjoy the Second Amendment’s legal protection against despotic government.

Before the Civil War ended, State “Slave Codes” prohibited slaves from owning guns. After President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, and after the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution abolishing slavery was adopted and the Civil War ended in 1865, States persisted in prohibiting blacks, now freemen, from owning guns under laws renamed “Black Codes.” They did so on the basis that blacks were not citizens, and thus did not have the same rights, including the right to keep and bear arms protected in the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, as whites. This view was specifically articulated by the U.S. Supreme Court in its infamous 1857 decision in Dred Scott v. Sandford to uphold slavery.

The United States Congress overrode most portions of the Black Codes by passing the Civil Rights Act of 1866. The legislative histories of both the Civil Rights Act and the Fourteenth Amendment, as well as The Special Report of the Anti-Slavery Conference of 1867, are replete with denunciations of those particular statutes that denied blacks equal access to firearms.[Kates, Handgun Prohibition and the Original Meaning of the Second Amendment, 82 Mich. L. Rev. 204, 256 (1983)] However, facially neutral disarming through economic means laws remain in effect.

After the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1878, most States turned to “facially neutral” business or transaction taxes on handgun purchases. However, the intention of these laws was not neutral. An article in Virginia’s official university law review called for a “prohibitive tax … on the privilege” of selling handguns as a way of disarming “the son of Ham”, whose “cowardly practice of ‘toting’ guns has been one of the most fruitful sources of crime ….Let a negro board a railroad train with a quart of mean whiskey and a pistol in his grip and the chances are that there will be a murder, or at least a row, before he alights.”[Comment, Carrying Concealed Weapons, 15 Va L. Reg. 391, 391-92 (1909); George Mason University Civil Rights Law Journal, Vol. 2, No. 1,“Gun Control and Racism,” Stefan Tahmassebi, 1991, p. 75] Thus, many Southern States imposed high taxes or banned inexpensive guns so as to price blacks and poor whites out of the gun market.

Actually the taxpayer is being held hostage by 47% of the population that think it is my job to work so they don't have to. So who is the slave and who is the master in that scenario?
