Bad food and third world housing conditions are often cited as big reasons to not re-up. This needs to become the norm not the exception.

I did 20 years in the Army. Barracks housing is all what you CHOOSE to make of it. If somebody doesn't reenlist because their room isn't comfortable, then I don't want that whiny mf'r in my foxhole anyhow. Imagine if they ever got sent to Iraq...No, imagine if he or she got sent to A-Stan where they all live in tents or homemade buildings.

The food has been GREAT since the mid-80's when they finally took rabbit off the menus when they worked out the budget for the mess halls. Oops, now they a dining facilities. Yes, we used to get rabbit at Fort Knox, KY.

I remember when they set a Burger King up at the BIAP in 2003, and everyone was happy. Then they got a big PX, Baskin Robbins, Subway, Pizza places, and everything else you could imagine. Then all the pog's (People other than grunts) got fat and they started putting new "rules" in place that affected those of us outside the wire, who weren't getting fat from it, too. I agree with General McChrystal in the aspect of getting rid of all that crap in a combat zone so the troops can concetrate on getting back safely instead of which burger they are going to get when they get back from a mission.

Back on thread, the Army has steadily been improving the barracks, housing, and DFAC's since the 80's. They are nice compared to what I grew up with, and even mine were tolerable. If that's all people have to gripe about, then I guess the wars are going pretty good?

And lastly, soldiers are soldiers. They signed up to fight wars and protect the country; they didn't sign up for a country club standard of living. It's not like you're going to BUY your barracks room. Deal with the small shit for 20 years, take your retirement check and buy a house. 20 years in the Army = a free house in reality. Use your VA loan, and it's zero $$$ down too.

Sorry but whiny people p!ss me off. Go ahead and get out of my Army since the toaster has been broken in the DFAC for the last month...

They've been building new DFAC's for years just like that one. they just didn't have one in that area of post since they shut the old one down. I'm happy they got a new one too.

No problem...The Army was a great first career choice for me, and I loved it.

Daily Horoscope for December 19

Taurus

Someone is very short-tempered, and they're liable to fly off the handle at a moment's notice. Maybe they're feeling vulnerable in some way or are desperately trying to defend what they see as their territory. Be sensitive to this and don't goad them into being even more irritable or upset than they are already. Frankly, it's just not worth it.
