There are other ways to control squirrel population and there are various other reasons why the levee may be damaged. Killing wildlife is inhumane and a shortsighted way of dealing with a problem that needs more planning and thoughts than genocide.

I'd have to agree with "save the squirrels!"
I, myself sell a brand of squirrel condoms, and teach a squirrel class about the application and use of such devices. We even cover which lubricants are the best to purchase!
(Don't send me nasty replies about "Squirrels should be taught abstinance!!!" - I'll just ignore them... this is a business after all!)
Anyhow, a few of my classes, and three or four generations after the levees collapse, and the squirrel population will be at reasonable levels.
