Myself and my family (including grandparents) will be visitng the Fort Walton/Destin area later this month. I have read and watched conflicting reports about the beaches and ocean water; tar balls & oil dispersant sickness. Please let me know what is the "real deal". Thanks from St. Louis, MO

salem , Mo we leave in 2 days , from SeaGrove beach, bout 25 miles south of destin , waters great,no oil spotted. kids loved it. beautiful beaches , clear water , and not crowded at all

Come on down. The water and the weather is beautiful. Its been in the 90s lately.

swimmers yesterday had to leave water with stings/itchiness. didn't see jellyfish supposedly so not sure what the cause, but it emptied the beach.

Went to San Bias last week. Best week on Gulf in years.

The gulf is back in business bring it on.

UPDATE - went yesterday afternoon June 6th and water was graet. clear and no sign of anything in water. we enjoyed hours of swimming. I was told likely just something churned up by a storm and then cleared. Also confirmed it was no jellies but some form of seaweed/plant life that was causing the skin irritation.

Thank you so much Ted. We are heading to Okalossa Island June 17th for a week and are so looking forward to it. Haven't been in two years and miss the ocean. I am glad to hear it is nothing to horrible.

its the gulf not ocean,i'm just correcting you cause if you call it the ocean while you're down there the locals get really mad and correct you.lol but have a great time while you're down there, case lord knows i miss living down there .use

Isn't it about time we put some people in office who protects the beautiful beaches. Ft Walton has a beautiful beach, I have walked it and swam in the gulf. Fantastic experience.

However future generation might be denied this wonderful opportunity if we do not do more to preserve our beaches.

Lie after lie has flowed from Obama`s mouth since he has been president. He fiddled around when we had the oil spill, he doesn't care about Florida except the votes he can get.

romney is the corporation man who only sees it as an opportunity to drill more oil in the gulf. He is not the one either.

why not give someone else who is dedicated to taking care of this beautiful natural treasure. Elect Greens. Go Green this year.

Apparently the LOCALS are idiots if they get BENT over something so trivial. That GULF wouldn't be there if not for "the ocean"!!!!!!!!!!
