Isn’t it kinda funny, the SWTR uses Keith Lau, who hasn’t taken office yet, as the spokesman for the Fort Smith board of directors in the paper. Keith is still concerned about the $168,000 shortfall at Oak Cemetery, but now he is really concerned that Fort Smith may have to make further cuts in the 2014 budget. He mentions if fees aren’t raised, we may have to cut some important services like fire and police. Really? Really?

Let’s compare the present police and fire departments.

Fort Smith police dept has total police personnel of 222 and a total 2013 department budget of $17,101,250
Fayetteville police dept has a total police personnel of 171 police and a total 2013 department budget of $12,563,883
Jonesboro police dept of 145 personnel and a total Operations Budget of 2013 of $7,877,335

Fort Smith fire dept has total fire personnel of 152 and a total 2013 budget of $13,886,200
Fayetteville fire dept has total fire personnel of 114 and a total 2013 budget of $8,790,855
Jonesboro fire dept has a total fire personnel of 113 and a total 2013 budget of $7,777,338

The total budget for the Mayor’s Office and the City Administrators Office in Fort Smith is $919,470, while in Fayetteville they have a mayor only and his total office expense is $335,472 and Jonesboro’s Mayor’s total office expense is $451,007

In other words, if Keith Lau was really concerned about our spending, he would note Fort Smith spends $10,216,710 million more or 47% more, than Fayetteville on the above 3 departments and our 85,544 population is only 10% larger.

Fort Smith spends $16,105,680 million more, or 98% more, than Jonesboro on the above departments and our population is only 29% larger than Jonesboro’s 66,194 population.

While Fort Smith has a proposed 2013 Budget of $271.4 million, Fayetteville has a 2013 proposed budget of $134.8 million and Jonesboro has a 2012 budget,(latest available) of $69.2 million, but is skewed somewhat due to a separate water utility.

Rather than be concerned about raising fees, shouldn’t Keith and the board be more concerned about making tough cuts to a obvious bloated budget?

You know, the beautiful thing about numbers, is even if no one cares, even if it is hard to see through the smoke and mirrors of a $168,000 shortfall at Oak Cemetery, the total numbers don’t lie.

Liberty 13 is correct. Since we are so bloated with personnel then why isn't Fort Smith a better place to live, have low crime, and attract more businesses and entrepeneurs?

if fort smith is spending the money, where are the results? no jobs, high crime, bloated convention center payroll, bloated A/P commission payroll, and very expensive garbage trucks. are we getting the results that we are paying for and why does the city spend 3 times the amount as similar cities to get less?

poor city leadership--poor city leadership---poor city leadership! gosack was the wrong man for the job when he was pushed into the job by kevin settle and he still is not qualified to run the city because he throws our money at problems and our city is running out of money to throw at problems! just my opinion folks!

maybe keith lau will figure it out and maybe he won't! keith is no dummy so if he does not see the spending problem and know how to fix it then he should not be a city director!

Reply to news----reason it will NEVER be posted or talked about in the Fort Smith media is the same as Frank Sharums comments at the last board meeting were ever reported in the TR.

We have a CYA adminstration and a media with no guts in this town...

gosack should take time on the city TV channel during the televised BOD meetings and explain why there are such huge budget differences! afterall, he is the city manager and should be willing to explain to the people of fort smith.

the only reason gosack would not explain the differences is if he has something to hide. I personally would like to see liberty 13 asking the questions! the people have a right to demand a full explanation because its their money being spent!

every elected official should and must be looking out for the average citizen! agree 100%. city directors are elected to office to set and approve policy and gosack is hired by the people to run the city efficiently and cost effectively! there is a difference because most city directors are part time because with their pay of 80 dollars per month, they need other full time jobs! fort smith spends over 919,000 dollars per year for city managers and their office expenses and should demand good budget management! gosack is paid very well by the taxpayers and should be held accountable if he over spends! afterall, he wanted the job and its his responsibility to manage. the city directors have been accused of mico management so they should only judge gosack's performance as a manager. just saying

gosack has had more than enough time to get his house in order and from looking at the numbers posted by liberty 13 he has failed! it may be time for the city directors to step up and make a decision on if ray can get the ship in order.

The rumor is that when Dennis Kelly was city administrator and was going to cut the bloated budget drastically, Settle held a meeting at the FSPD and we all know what happened: Kelly was fired.

it takes four votes for the board to do anything. Why do you keep giving Kevin Sette super powers?

But one board member can make a stink.

So as the other person said, SPEAK UP GEORGE!

You wanted back in, so do your job. If he asks no questions then we can only assume that everything is copacetic and that you creatures can shut up

poor old patrick jacobs who was soundly defeated by george catsavis for city director is still suffering from sour grape syndrome! its gosack's job to manage the city and that is why he is paid about 200,000 dollars per year and its george catsavis job to fire gosack if he fails. those are just the cold hard facts! sorry patrick but the garbage truck gravy train could be coming to an end! dennis kelly was ready to fire gosack before the settle gang turned the tables. its no secret who was incompetent at city hall and who dennis kelly wanted gone. now its very clear that kelly was right on target and lost his job because he wanted to clean up city hall!

the facts are out there folks about the illegal meeting held to fire kelly because he was going to do what he was hired by the people of fort smith to do! clean up the "dead wood" at city hall! their were names on the list that were to be fired for not doing their jobs! gosack was at the top of the list! when the good ole boys got wind of it, they knew the party was over and it was reported that the crony gang got together to pull the illegal coup.
