Well if they would make the people who own the buildings have to keep something in them or pay something to town mite help some places are so worn down and they won't fix them others charge way to much so people do not go there they need to do something fast

Really this is what it takes. What does people want in the stores. There is people out there not making it, u would of thought the used clothing stores would of worked. But they didn't. So what is it, people with alote of money would make fort scott better.

It would be AWESOME to turn it into something resembling the Branson Landing, carriage rides and all. Oh, that'll never happen, I know. Why would anyone want to go to Fort Scott? The fort is just NOT a tourist destination anymore!!!

We need some incentives to attract shop owners and then to keep them here. One huge downfall for our community is the drive in from the East side. It is so unbelievable how dirty and run down it is. That does not look much like a welcoming mat at the side door of a tourist town. The city needs to figure out a way to get that area looking the part. Tear down a few of the empty buildings and do some painting and TLC to the rest. If the community would really pull together and show some heart this town could come back. Just takes a little elbow grease.

The elbow grease would be good. But some of the owners and renters can't afford it. Some of them don't get Grants like others I won't mention. And they are the ones that don't need it. So no other ideas to help owners and renter. People don't shop in the store because it don't look good on the outside. Wow how low can fort scott get. Its like u don't wear the right clothing, I'm not talking to you. How childish.....

Besides being run down and outdated the biggest contributor to the down turn of downtown is at the south end if town. The mom and pop shops cannot compete with Wally world. Plus you add in the lack of good paying jobs and its the perfect recipe to kill of any downtown area. A lot of people travel to KC Joplin or Pittsburg to work and while they are there they do most of their shopping. It will take a lot more than just cleaning up fort scott to turn this town around. There needs to be a economic overhaul combined with an appearance change and not just a little paint it needs to include a a sense if community pride.

You both make good points. I'm talking about the COMMUNITY coming together to deside they want our town to survive. We need to clean it up and create a real vision for the future. Capitalize on the historic value of the town and develop it ten steps further. Of course a little paint can go a long way!! We need to start somewhere don't we? Of course the outside appearance counts towards getting them inside the shops!! But, to take that even further the appearance of the town as a whole will work to either draw people in or deter them from wanting to stick around. It will take the COMMUNITY to pull this town out of the gutter. Elbow grease and a will to survive. That's what we need to make it into a healthy future.

how bout getting people to volunteer to help fix up downtown, and help some of those owners who cant afford it, maybe they would be more likely to help back on the community themselves, I know that would involve work and effort of many. and I am sure there will be a hundred other excuses why down town cant be cleaned up... lets stop complaining about it and make it happen. oh some folks did that, and people dogged them for opening a shop.... hmmmmmm... so confusing. i'll bet it is expensive to have empty buildings just sitting there.. owners lower your prices for your rent. people stop complaining when a business comes in and support it. and lets get a group together to help out fixing it back up. down town does have a lot of possibilities like branson, and we have a lot of talent here in ft. scott. down town is only gonna be what the community makes it. support the little guys instead of wally world.

bullshit...plenty of jobs, just not people that want to work. unemployment is low in BB county. The people that don't want to work are not. There are jobs available, just cant fill them. People want industry in town, but we cant fill the need for qualified applicants. get real, get facts from the people that know.

Yeah, plenty of jobs. Facts from people who know, BB county unemployment rate, 6.2%(us dept of labor). Job search on Kansas job force site, BB county job openings, 14. So I guess your comment is correct if the county population is about 300 people give or take. Sorry, don't sugarcoat things. Jobs that only pay minimum wage will not help us grow. We need jobs that will help the middle class grow, there are people out there willing to work hard to get ahead, but jobs like that aren,t here.

The town I graduated from 30yrs. ago is not the same place I returned to 6yrs. ago by any means...not only the downtown area, but the people themselves. I didn't notice during my frequent weekend visits with family, except that local friends seemed more desperate for my out-of-town companionship. I spoke to everyone, as I always had done my whole life...all walks of life...everyone and anyone. Upon my return though, as a permanent resident, I was frequently asked by my oldest,{thought dearest)friends, "Why do you speak to so-and-so?". One commented, "You haven't changed at all." (I didn't take that as an insult because quite honestly, I'm one of the best people I know!!!) Anyway, long story short, the untrue things I'd hear about myself around here depressed me severely. I've learned to speak to no one! I'm much happier to work, shop and socialize in the city 90 miles North...speak only to family members and just smile slightly, maybe say short greeting(don't want anyone get wrong ideas)to those I pass. When and IF folks around here realize we are all just trying to make it through this life and to not be so hard on each other, THEN Fort Scott might survive.

Call some of the area employers and find out how hard it is to fill positions...get your facts straight. The 6.2% is made up mostly of people that are content right where they are at, or want to get a ck and not work for it, or want to start at the top, or not show up at all. There are several places in and around Fort Scott that need employees, pay better than minimum wage and have great benefits. They cannot expand due to the inability to hire people that want to work...I am close with 3 area facilities, and all complain of the same issue, filling open positions. You need to do a little more homework and not rely on the internet.

Ok, if these employers can't fill positions, perhaps they should list job openings somewhere they can be seen. The "internet" site I referred to is the listing provided by the state job placement agency, ie: unemployent office. So, if the unemployment office doesn't know that area employers need people, they can't refer people to these jobs. One can't get help if one doesn't ask for it. Please share your inside information and I'm sure these employers would have many individuals to choose from

I guess we got off the point on getting more people down town. Have something go on in the empty lots. Crafts, someone singing. Something, that's not going to cost a bunch to have booth. Have this every now and then to have a people come down town. We need more people in fort scott to come down instead of having a feather up there u know what's. What happend to the people here.

You're right, and I apologize for getting off subject. Iam old enough to remember when you couldn't find a parking spot and every shop was open. I miss what this town once was. I like the ideas you put forth, some communities have an improv bluegrass night on the square. While the music might not have appealed to everyone, it was a nice social event.

One of the places down town should be made in to.a Childrens place like a indoor bounce house or even one. The bigger places that are sitting empty make a skate rink it may not seem like much but will help some and give kids something to do Mabey they should lower rent to bring new stores down there it is sad in 6 years this place has declined so much if you look around everything is forsale
