Don't confuse the town of Riley with Ft. Riley. Riley isn't a complete turd of a place, unlike Ft. Riley and Junction City.

To those wondering what to do while stationed at Ft. Riley/Manhattan/Junction City:
you can drive 2 hours to KC and shop, have fun etc. make it a weekend trip, stay in a hotel -lots to do.
Or...wear your purple and go to the games. Not into that? too bad...they cut in on your radio stations for ALL of the local football games, yes...even high school.
Wanna work? good luck if you're not K-State Alumni.
Hmmm...what else to do...oh drive west about 12 hours (or 3 days) like I did to get away from it all.
Have fun, hope ya like purple!
Geesh not that bad

Let me know what you like to do and i will
point you to it.
I have been here in the area since 03 and i am still alive! There are things to do you just have to know about them. Or try something new.
Manhattan is a good place to live. There is more to do then junction city more shopping, more restaurants and more for kids/family. Crime rate
is low as well and they are still building and creating jobs.
To see what is going on in jc (junction city) just go to their forum on here and you get the picture.
Yes Kstate is big here go figure it's a college town. So you will see purple everywhere.
I am not a football fan, but the activities that come along with it in this town can be fun.
It's not a huge city, so yes you will give up
on some things. But you can go to kansas city or wichita both about 2 hours drive.
Just ask i will do my best to give you advice.

There are quiet a few. Go on craigslist or
call a property management company. I know we have a couple in my neighbourhood.
It all depends on how much you willing to pay.
Just stay away from a real estate agent/ landlord
Larry Limbocker he has a ver bad reputation! Prommissing things to get fixed, witholding deposits with bogus charges and stuff like that.
Se be careful. He used to be with Knight realty.
Hope this helps a little.

Incoming personnel- The housing office at Ft. Riley is a real disappointment and not much help at all. Be prepared. I would recommend looking at living in manhattan. There is much more to do there and the citizens are very very military friendly. The college has numerous things to do that keep you "off post" when you arent working. I have enjoyed my time in Manhattan immensely and recommend it for both single and married alike. Best of luck.

Hows the Hunting and Fishing there? Will get there in March...always good fishing in the South during that time. Heard its out away from the city...sounds great...cities suck. Would love to find a house to rent maybe buy out in the country somewhere. Anyone know a good dock to park your boat at? Any good biker bars close by Riley? How many Tornados hit there in a given year?

Hi there. I am new to the whole Army relocation stuff (I just married my soldier) and we are being sent from Ft. Polk in Louisiana to Ft. Riley. I have a 5th grader and a 6th grader who currently attend a Magnet school in Louisiana. We will be moving in early November. Could anyone tell me which schools are the best? Also, are there any Social Work jobs in the area?
Thanks.

It depends on where you live as Manhattan, Fort Riley,Junction City or Grandview. If you live on post there is Pre-K-5 and only one Middle school on post.My kids went to Jefferson Elem and then Fort Riley Middle before we left there. They are very good schools.

Fort Riley was not as bad as these people are making it! We just moved from there and it has been our favorite duty station! I was so sad to leave. The people are nice and are enthusiastic about their college. No harm there. Topeka is only about 45 minutes away and it has pretty much anything you need. Kansas City is about an hour from there and has sooo much to do. As long as you go out and try new things..it will be fun! Don't go with a negative attitude because of some of these responses...We loved it and would go back in a heartbeat
