My husband and I are thinking of moving to Florida, possibly the Ft. Myers or surrounding area. I wanted to see what everyone's opinion on the best place to live is...price, schools, beaches, activities etc. I appreciate any input :)

The basic breakdown is this: South Florida (Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and the Palm Beaches) are overcrowded and seedy. The I-4 corridor (Tampa-Orlando-Daytona) is not far behind. The Panhandle is backward and primitive. You've seen 'Deliverance', right? I myself am looking into SW Florida. I've been on trips there and it seems to fit "just right". It's essentially a retirement community, peaceful and quiet. However, this is the sort of place one can raise healthy happy children in.

Thank you so much for the input! I have read mixed reviews about Lehigh Acres and seen many rental homes that seemed to look nice online but were very inexpensive. Is this a completely sketchy area or are there nice parts...thanks!

Lehigh Acres is the big emerging suburb of SW Florida. However, it is primarily composed of recent Miami "exiles" looking to get out of the hustle and bustle. I'm trying to leave Miami, not move into a pale imitation of it! It's not a sketchy area. It's still suburban and what not, but its not the Ft. Myers we all know and love. You might want to look at Cape Coral or even further south into Naples/Bonita Springs.

I read up on that as well. The rentals seem pretty affordable in both of those areas too. I guess I am going to have to go down there and just get a feel for it. You haven't heard about crime in Lehigh? Or is it one of those neighborhoods where part of it is bad and then part of it is good? Do you know if there are good beaches close to those areas and, being on the west coast I'm unsure, is the oil affecting those areas? The beach is one of the big reasons I want to relocate since I live in the desert now :) Thank you so much for the input by the way!
