In county named for Robert E. Lee, portrait divides community

In the Lee County Commission chambers, Robert E. Lee looms larger than life. His hat in one hand, his sword in the other, he gazes out from a giant portrait that overlooks elected officials and anyone who comes ... Full Story

Get over it. You've lived in this most outstanding United States and should consider yourself an American - period.
Get out of the past and get on with what is good for our country. Could you name another country where you would be allowed to speak out as you do here? This country has a past and this is a part of it.

If my name was Willie Green, I'd probably feel the same way & develop a nervous tic of looking over my shoulder.
Enjoy life here. Read-up on our true history.

I think some people such as Mr.Green are under educated when it comes to matters such as the war between the states. Mr.Green thinks that EVERYBODY who fought for the South wanted slavery. Does he not know that Robert E.Lee was AGAINST SLAVERY.If you compare the confederate flags and leaders e.g, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson to the swastika and people like Adolf Hitler,Goebbels,Eichmann, then you are mentally challenged, my friend.

Robert E Lee was the greatest general the American army had in his day.

When the war between the states broke out he left for the confederate army saying he was going back to defend his country of Virgina.

While this is Treason he still played an important part of the security of our nation before the war.

I would hate to see our nations history sanitized for political correctness.

His portrait is more a reminder of those that matched words with deeds.

Baltimore Maryland was named for Lord Baltimore yet our country does not believe in Lords.

Should we go to a system of numbers instead of names ?

I forgot , then we can't use the number 13 .

Where does it end ?

This is for willie green...did you know that some union generals didnt give up their slaves until the ratification of the fourteenth amendment in 1868 even though the emancipation proclomation was in 1863. so some people like lee fought for his country not for slavery, but for loyalty.

AMEN! BTW, I find people more bias and hateful from up north than here! KEEP the picture UP! IT is OUR history! Most people that flap their gums don't have a clue about the history of the south, just their bigot unfounded assumptions about the south and the heritage.

Yep! As a matter of fact, AMERICA is the one that assigned the states to slavery or not, the southern states were the main states for slavery because things grew here all year. They wanted a balance with the states, some with slavery and some not with slavery. These are the same people complaining who are too stupid to know that blacks sold themselves to us! So to the ones like Jackson and those that actually believe they are African Americans, and not Americans (you weren't born in Africa, so please stop the PC crap)-Africa or here?? HMMMMMMMM which is better?? HERE and if NOT LEAVE... SO STOP COMPLAINING!!! GET THE CHIP OFF THE SHOULDER, QUIT THE RACE CARD "VICTIM" garbage, and WE OWE YOU NOTHING! I am so glad not all blacks have the stupid "victim" everyone who is white is out to get me or "hold me down" mentality, like DAISY LYNUM, racist idiot! She is just as bad as Sharpton with her reverse discrimination crap!

Robert E. Lee was a racist who worked against African Americans after the Civil War. Robert E. Lee Jr best describes his attitudes. This is from the Recollections and Letters of General Lee, by his son, R.E. Lee, Jr., which was published by Doubleday, Page & Company in 1904. The following is a section about R.E. Lee Sr. visiting "Corbin Braxton's widow" for dinner with some friends and his son gives an account on page 168 of the 1988 reprint by Broadfoot Publishing Co., of Lee Sr.'s conversation with Colonel Carter.

In talking with Colonel Carter about the situation of farmers at that time in the South, and of their prospects for the future, he urged him to get rid of the negroes left on the farm -- some ninety odd in number, principally women and children, with a few old men -- saying the government would provide for them, and advised him to secure white labour. The Colonel told him he had to use, for immediate needs, such force as he had, being unable at that time to get the whites. Where upon General Lee remarked:'I have always observed that wherever you find the negro, everything is going down around him, and wherever you find the white man, you see everything around him improving.'

It is true, however, that he was opposed to slavery.

yea southern girl i really agree with you on that racism card bs. the ones that get me are those that think they are owed something because their relatives from 200 years ago were enslaved. like you live in this great country shut up and enjoy it or go back to africa with all the diseases and hunger.
Sweetie Pie, there are diseases and hunger here too. All you have to do is go and volunteer in some soup kitchen where the White homeless and hungry are just as numerous as the Blacks or visit the poor areas like the Appalachian Mtn areas where poverty and disease is rampant. And those people are white. You don't know very much about this country of which you seem to be so proud of. So while you're pointing a finger at Africa, there's three pointing back at America. America has plenty, PLENTY of hunger and disease.

Lincoln was the Hitler of his day.
A Truly Evil man.

He Ordered and /or approved of the Murder and starvation of Confederate POWS - See Camp Douglas in Illnois for starters.

He Ordered the theft of food from women and children , and the Burning of their Homes.

He and Sherman would have been Hung if tried at Nuremburg.

Oh whether you do or not, we'll get what's owed one way or another. You don't necessarily owe us but you owe our ancestors since you're benefitting from their slave labor which made this country ( at least the whites) rich and since they are not around to collect, then naturally we'll collect for them. LOL

Robert E. Lee was seen praying with an african-american "Anifa" and he did work to bring reconciliation between the North and the South!!

I'm going to use that portrait as a urinal cake, the same as I do with the confederate phag stickers I peel off of these hicks bumpers.

One time a skinny, two- toothed idiot tried to stop me, and I knocked him out with one punch. Usually they see me and are too scared to say anything, so they look down + pretend it isn't their truck.

Rednecks were racist coward losers that couldn't fight during the civil war, and they still are to this day.

The fires of Hell are stoked by southern souls! The North will win again! Hillary 2016!
