Crime is many thousands of times worse than even portrayed. Fort Myers aka Fort Crimers/Little Pakistan, Little Baghdad, is amongst the most dangerous places in the Western Hemisphere. Terrorists are everywhere They always blow up stuff left and right on a daily basis. And then they rob all the victims, steal their identities, money, credit cards, and then use it all to buy drugs. Even the Mayor of Fort Myers is a known terrorist who has likely even perpetrated 9/11 and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. I am sure at least 99.9% of all vacationers who visited Fort Myers remember the smell of sulfur, gunpowder, burning plastic, rubber, paint, all that typical stench of a typical structure fire mixed in with the smell of detonated explosives that hangs in the air all 24 hours a day, every day. Even tap water in Fort Myers has a nasty sulfuric taste mixed in with tastes of burned plastic, burned rubber, and such mixed in.

But truthfully, there is no such thing as "safety" in the State of Florida. Even if Fort Myers had a crime rate of zero, you also deal with big, giant, mutant, man-eating cockroaches that fly. They grow as big as 25 feet long, they eat people left and right. Mosquitoes that grow to 10 feet long, when one of those bites you, it's stinger easily drills right through you like a skewer, and then you need to go to the emergency room and get stitches. Additionally, those mosquitoes have a type of saliva that is extremely corrosive and burns right through your organs like acid. Also, the alligators get up to 300 feet long, and they also eat people left and right, and they are totally impossible to hide from as they can easily smash right through steel reinforced poured concrete (the alligators are even capable of bringing down a steel frame skyscraper!) and they'll gobble you right up in a heartbeat. Additionally, there are poisonous snakes that will slither up out of your toilet and bite you on your rear while you are going to the bathroom. They also come out of drains, bite and nibble on people's feet while taking a shower and nibble on people's hands and arms while doing dishes, and they have the strength to smash right through a steel drain plug, even with enough force to destroy a sink and/or bathtub for good.

Additionally, those snakes in Florida are also easily capable of destroying entire plumbing systems. They slither up pipes, and when they expand their bodies, ba-boom! Those snakes will easily rip a steel pipe to ribbons with a single expansion of their big muscular bodies, and they are capable of exerting a pressure as high as 250,000 pounds per square inch!

I spent a year and a half in the swamp in Northern Fl and the worst I saw was enough red wasps to cover the interior walls of a building, a five foot alligator I had to stop my car for on Hwy 98, and little nasty scorpions on the bomb range at Eglin, and huge muscular jumping spiders at Eglin, there was no running water at the swamp site so we drove the truck down 98 to a lake , posted a water snake lookout, and skinny dipped to get a bath. Toilets? When I inquired the two Msgts roared with laughter and pointed to an entrenching tool with a roll of paper. They pointed to the door and told me : "a hundred yards down the hill in any direction..make plenty of noise so the rattlers and alligators know to get out of the way. " Only person I heard got hurt was a jeep driver dumb enough to aim for a rattler. The knobby tires through the snake up at the driver who had to be taken to the hospital. Back in Panama City high sheriff "Doc" Daffin provided TV entertainment from time to time. You did have to watch out for those roadside drainage ditches. I knew a guy saved his pay from Vietnam and bought a 396/425 HP Chevelle SS which he rolled into one of those ditches first week.(survived being mortared to almost get killed in his car). Strangely enough I miss those days.

Yes, Fort Myers is dangerous in many parts, like any city there are places you do not go.
In the bad parts of town there are about 30 murders a year.
I have lived here a long time (49 years) and try to avoid the city of Fort Myers itself.
That said, there are many other parts of Lee county that are perfectly safe.
But beware, there are more con artist here than any where else

The area is full of forclosures that have been bought up by scum lords to rent as section 8.The area is full of welfare reciepiants.Cape Coral has had many police officers shot.Fort myers was the first city to have federal building blown up or set on fire cant remember.Lots of immoral people including professionals that use prostitutes, escorts, call girls, strippers, desperate divorced women etc.Lots of scams from car dealers to service companies that will even steal from old retired people.Cost of living is comparable to other states but wages are low. Most people visit the area for the weather but are smart enough to leave after they have had their nefarious adventure.

Yep. Perfectly safe in Southwest Florida. Just make sure you're stocked up on firearms and a few good guard dogs. Don't keep anything valuable in your home and never wear jewelry. You'll be just fine.
