Yeah, just what we need: a bunch of crackers taking antibiotics when they don't really need them. Great. I'm sure nothing could go wrong with this plan....

Take advantage of this, there is no catch other than the 14-day limit. Meijer in the midwest has been doing this since October 2006. Walmart has a list of $4 meds (30-day supply). K-Mart has $15 meds (90-day supply). Costco has $10 meds (100-qty). It's a drug pricing war. We all win.

Expect to see a sharp rise in drug-resistent infections, like MRSA.

I am a pharmacist residing in another state. I went to pharmacy school for 6 years to become a professional.
What a sell out by pharmacy in Florida. As a pharmacist in Florida I would hang my head in shame. I think the term is a bunch of scumbags

PUBLIX WILL BE GONE IN 5 YEARS AFTER 30 + YEARS OF OVERPRICING FLORIDA. WAL-MART IS SLOWING CHOKING THEM TO DEATH. Publix would NEVER so something like this...ever. They are feeling the heat. And why is Drudge Report saying "free drug" like a general drug term. What an idiot, he is such a font-freak liar. 90% of Publix board are members of Bank of America too, nice bonus.

The Lemay woman is a liar. Those antibiotics mentioned would cost less than $10 each at regular pricing. Plus as a Social Security recipient, her Medicare part D deductible would be from zero to $5 or so on each of them. Not thousands. And she knows this.

Publix is actually not the first company to do this. In the Midwest the Meijer stores have been offering the same antibiotics for free for 1-2 years. My understanding is that the response has not been that huge. These are VERY inexpensive drugs anyway, and even those without insurance would likely pay 10-15 dollars for most of them, and the cost to Publix is very small.
I do think the reporting in this article is somewhat irresponsible, as with the quote from the lady stating she could save "thousands of dollars." That is somewhat misleading.
As for the several negative comments regarding Medicare Part D. It is far from perfect, but I can honestly say that the majority of my customers have benefitted from it. As many of them have said to me, "It's better than nothing, which is what I had before."

On the one hand, healthcare experts are worried about the overuse of antibiotics and resistance. Now they are going to give away free antibiotics. Doesn't sound like this is a very smart thing to do.

I think there is some benefit to public health with a program like this, but I am concerned that it is not coupled with awareness about anti-biotic resistance.

if there's any indication we abuse and overuse antibiotics, this is it.

What part of "you need a prescription to get these drugs" don't you understand? Read the article before you comment. Last I knew antibiotics weren't what people were taking to get high. Just Shows can you please tell me what made you deduce that liberals where the ones complaining? This seems like an odd statement since they're the ones that want to move to free health care.

Possibly one of the greatest pr moves ever. It will be interesting to see if they can handle the response.

Wonderful, finally we can completely destroy the effectiveness of antibiotics by having every idiot use them for no reason at all, and developing resistant strains of virtually everything.

The program is not free. Publix's pricing is significantly higher than many other retailers. It is intended to lure people into their stores to spend more and is a gimmick.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers give away billions of dollars in free product each year just domestically. May I remind you that the most expensive non-generic drugs are still far cheaper in Canada, which has socialized health care. That is not because the Canadian government subsidizes these prescriptions, but because it has the power to negotiate pricing.

You are sadly misinformed.
