Districts receive student testing results
By Amanda Joering Alley • ajoering@nky.com • September 23, 2009

School districts across Campbell County have spent the past week reviewing page after page of test results and making plans for future improvement.

The Kentucky Department of Education recently released the federal NCLB and Kentucky Core Content Results, which rank students in the distinguished, proficient, apprentice and novice levels, with only the first two meeting NCLB standards.

Since the method of reporting is different after the state did away with CATS, comparisons to past years scores is difficult for many districts who are trying to track students' yearly progress.

In Southgate, Principal Kim Simpson said the changes in scoring will make for a challenging year, not knowing exactly what to focus on in lesson plans.

But, the district is happy with its recent results, with most students scoring in the distinguished and proficient levels and with the district meeting all the Average Yearly Progress (AYP) goals.

"The scores are fantastic, and I really think that's a testimony to the dedication of our teachers and students," Simpson said.

In Dayton, the special needs students portion is the main reason the district didn't meet its AYP goals, said Assistant Superintendent Patricia Patterson.

"Our elementary scores went up in every category, but we didn't make it in special needs," Patterson said. "It's really difficult for us because we've always made it in the past."

Patterson said school officials and teachers are currently working together to develop a plan for improvement.

In Bellevue Independent Schools, mathematics at Bellevue High School was the only goal not met in the district's three schools.

"Any time you don't meet a requirement you're not happy," said Dan Ridder, the district's assessment director. "We have some work to do."

Ridder said the district is looking at ways to improve the mathematics scores at the high school and is giving students frequent standardized tests to see how they are progressing.

"These tests will give us a good idea of how we're doing and areas we need focus on," Ridder said.

In Newport Independent Schools, only Mildred Dean Elementary and Newport Middle School met their AYP goals.

A.D. Owens Elementary and Fourth Street Elementary fell short on their reading goal, while Newport High School didn't make the mathematics goal.

Representatives from Newport were not available for comment.

Well of course MD leads again....they are the best school in the district....due to the dedicated principal, fabulous teachers, hardworking students, and involved parents.
There was never a doubt that MD would continue to lead.
It's no wonder naysayers want to close it...MD makes the other schools look bad.
Instead of spreading lies about MD they need to be saying "what are they doing RIGHT that we aren't doing?"

There is NO MONEY to keep Mildred Dean open. Oh course, the district could charge tuition to keep such a wonderful school open.

Did you say you look stupid? No the children at the other three schools that didn't perform up to standards look stupid yet it isn't their fault. I do agree the teachers at the three failing schools should hold their heads in shame. Give me a really good reason NIS should shut down its top performing school? And not some lame excuse like McCafferty is a cheater or there isn't enough money. How about shut down ADO and send the kids up to Mildred Dean. Then maybe the kids will get the education they deserve. Please one good reason, I'm waiting.

Here's a concept. If there is enough money to leave 2 schools open then combine 4th St and A D Owens. Leave the BEST school in the district as is.

The scores show that these MD kids will likely do JUST FINE when they are moved to another school building.

Yet moving them into another building isn't going to make ADO & FS kids any smarter. All it will do is give MD children the same under achieved education that ADO & FS kids already get. Why not ask for some of that Stimulus money Obama has thrown around and put a large addition on Mildred Dean and the ADO children would get a great education. And then we could sell ADO to Trauth Dairy like they should have done years ago. Trauth would love to have that land. Please in all reality you dumb a$$e$ really don't think closing Mildred Dean will help the district?????? Just a look into the future tells you that the Feds will be involved very shortly because three out of five schools are not achieving their goals. Then all that money you save by shutting MD down you lose anyway. Lets do the right thing and get rid of Brandt and his Cronnies. Leave open the schools for another 4 years and see where we are financially then. Because you people really need to wake up. We are about to lose all control real soon if our scores as a whole keep coming in under par. Lets look at the district as a whole, not as you against me. This district has really gone to pot since he has taken over. WAKE UP PEOPLE quit worrying about the small issue of consolidation and look beyond the smoke screen Brandt has thrown up here. He has started this merge thing to give him more time to ruin our schools. Look back 20 years ago. We were not in this shape. PLEASE WAKE UP!

I am sure that MD kids will do "JUST FINE" wherever they are -my question is how will teachers do when they have a class of 25-29 students, instead of the 13-15 they have currently?? Students at ADO and 4th Street are crammed into classrooms!!! Does it take a merge for class sizes to become equitable???

Although you have a good MD attitude, I thought you could spell better, perhaps you should have gone to the academy.

Daily Horoscope for December 2

Capricorn

The Gemini Full Moon brings situations at work to a head; there may be a sudden event that shakes up the office, but you should be free and clear of any real trouble. The real issue is the one you have most likely been avoiding: what sort of state is your health in? Have you been buying larger pants each year for the past three or four years in a row? Is your idea of strenuous exercise scooping hard ice cream out of the carton? If so, it's time for some changes.
