Council changes rules on residency
City Council voted last week to change the residency requirements in the city code, which previously required the assistant city manager, as well as all department heads to become Hopewell residents within six months of being hired It has been changed so now only the city clerk, city manager and city attorney must live in the city.

Unbelievable. Where is the "buy in" to the City when certain dept heads can leave every night and every weekend and forget about Hopewell. Are they embarrassed to live the City? Were they not aware of this standard when they accepted the position(s). Our tax dollars pay their huge salaries and other localities are reaping the benefits. Thank you Councilor Pelham for standing your ground and speaking your mind!!

I agree 100% IF you can't be a part of us, including LIVING HERE then you don't belong in any city position. Looks to me like the "Rats" are really deserting the ship. So what's their real problem? Just can't get a position on the county or place "YOU REALLY" want to live?

This is crap! What kind of vested interest do they have in the City if they don't live here??? They can go home to their nice little neighborhood and not have to live with the cards they are dealing us!!!!!
I don't particularly care for Pelham's choices but she is dead on this time!!!!

Everyone is actually right. They should live in the city and reap the benefits of the low taxes, higher crime rates ad corrupt council. Maybe if any qualified residents would have applied for those poitions, they would not have to seek outside applicants to fill those positions. Residents should thank those directors for coming to the city and trying to make a difference. The directors do more for the citizens/residents than some of the members on city council do and they actually live there. Some council members have their own agendas and answer to the "group" behind the scenes. What I speak is the truth, I have witnessed it. Mybe if more residents actually went to city council meetings, the crazy decisions they make would not be made.

Your taxes are lower compared to other counties/cities. They do not get raised because the coucillors are scared they will get voted out of office. Simple fact. If they raised taxes and stopped frivolous spending habits, the city finances would be a lot better than the current situation.
