Jeez,.... isn't the Sun-Slantinal going to say once again that Mr. Lovell " gunned down " the two ARMED ROBBERS ? Couldn't it be rather, he defended his life and the lives of others? I know, that wouldn't sell papers, would it?

There's another hero here that no one has mentioned; Andres Ramirez, the store employee. He has come here from another country, taken one of those "low-wage jobs" that the two thieves had tired of. Then, after this horrific experience, shows up at work two days later. God bless you, Mr. Ramirez.

The same can be said for Mr. Malik, the store owner. You, sir, embody the American Dream and I'm proud that have you have chosen this country to make your home.

On another note, I'd be willing to bet a week's pay that if the two thieves had just walked out of the store with the cash drawer and Mr. Lovell's $500, that this would have been just one more strong arm robbery that would have never even made it into the papers.

Good boys ... I think not.

We dont know the whole story....Just what we read. Lord knows how they sensationalize everything. He knew if he killed them that he wouldnt be charged. He could have shot them in the legs, let the cops take them to jail where they would have to pay for their actions. But hey...it's better to just kill them. Two young black men...who cares huh!!!!

You're an idiot. You've never fired a gun under stress to save your life. Wild Bill Hickock and his famous shooting is only in the movies. Trying to shoot someone in the legs would have resulted in stray bullets out on Pine Island Road, possible injuring an innocent bystander. This man is a hero, and only acted when he was sure he was about to be executed, it's in the store video. I'm sick of the know nothings like you.

Hey sickoftheknowitallpeople, your comments are ignorant. The lesson learned is that you don't commit armed robbery unless you are willing to pay with your life. Race has nothing to do with this story. I would aim for center mass and fire at least twice at each armed robber, regardless of race or sex. In real life nobody shoots at legs or shoots the gun out of somebody's hand.

The only tragedy here is that one of them survived. Now the little scumbags grandparents, Pastor and Rosa Jones, are wondering why the former Marine/hero who defended the innocent from these scumbags did not himself go to jail. Amazing.

You are an idiot. The culprits of this incident choose to enter into a violent act. They choose to make this a potential life ending situation for someone. Unfortunately for them, fortunate for us, they choose the wrong victim. Kudos to the Marine and his Corps.
Something else to think about - had he just wounded both of them. Who would be paying the medical bill??? This Marine saved the Broward County Property Owners THOUSANDS of dollars with his $6.00 investment in quality ammo (If you need more let me know I got a whole bunch - maybe we could work out a deal my Property Taxes are through the roof).

Saw the comment about shooting for the legs.

If one is in fear of ones life or the lives of others, then one must shoot to kill. Shooting for the legs, gun hand etc. and saying...."well, I didnt want to kill him" may be considered primea facia evidence that the citizen was not in fact fearing for his life. Any decent prosecuter would use that reasoning against the victim. So it comes down to a simple addage. Do not point your gun at anything you do not intend to destroy. If you must shoot in self defense, then you must shoot to kill. Once the thugs get THAT message and once they come to believe that one in twenty citizens may be armed, the police will go out of business.

Wow, I understand that this world is full of diversity and f-ing idiots, but the "shoot him in the legs" guy should go find the front of a bus on the interstate. 2 to the chest, 1 to the head, failure to stop. No questions asked. I carry a .38 and a full size glock .40 with 15 rounds of hydashocks, if I PULL my gun, IF that is, it is ONLY because someone or myself is in imminent threat of serious bodily harm or death. There for, it's going to be them rather than me or my people. You shoot them in the legs (aside from being straight out of the movies) you go to jail because apparently you didn't really need to shoot. Someone shot in the head has a much more significant problem firing back.

First off, there are no FORMER or EX-Marines. Once a Marine, always a Marine! Those two ARMED CRIMINALS got what was coming to them. This was a clear cut case of a legally armed and permitted SENIOR CITIZEN defending his life and the lives of others facing grave danger. Sickoftheknowitallpeople, you don't shoot for the legs in a situation like that unless you want to run the risk of an armed criminal shooting back and killing you instead. Put your race card away. That dog don't hunt here. The situation totally justified deadly force. Semper Fi, oorah John!

Marines, remember your 12th General Order.
Shoot to kill. Thank you John Lovell for eliminating one scumbag who will never, ever harm another person again.

You are an idiot. These two scumbags got what they got coming. God forbid they go out and get a job like like the rest of the world. Instead they chose to commit a felony. Actions have consquences. Now they are dead, and took with them the possibility of having more little scumbags that would rob or sell drugs. Yes, the marine is a HERO.

sickofalltheknowitallpeople, do you realize how sick I am of those with attitudes like yours? Why are you making this a racial thing? Two thugs committed a crime and didn't plan on encountering someone who was armed. The two thugs got what they deserved. The only sad part is that both of them didn't die. No, the real racist here is YOU. What, should this guy have given them a pass because they're black? And then to have their family members attempt to defend these two dirtbags! What unbelievable, inexcusable and mentally ill thinking. That's very much what's wrong with America today is the proliferation of morons like you. Good job John Lovell; you're my hero for today! May the numbers who are like John multiply and prosper and may the types of people like these two slimeballs wither and die.
