There are a lot of things we don't fully understand or about which we know the full story.
Apparently, the democratically elected, Mohammed Mosaddeq, planned to nationalize the oil industry and shut out the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company which was a vital interest to Britain's economy and provided them political clout in the region.
By the time Eisenhower came to office, fears that communists were poised to overthrow the Iranian government became an all-consuming concern. The power struggle between Russia and the U.S. back then was, in part, who had the most influence in oil-rich countries.
Both Britian and the United States had much to lose.
We could have gone back to the horse and buggy, I suppose.
As Madeline Albright summized, "The Eisenhower Administration believed its actions were justified for strategic reasons."
There are no crystal balls.
I wish you wouldn't use the word "we" when talking about things YOU don't understand.

You can make the above rationalization all you want but it doesn't negate the damage that resulted and doesn't justify repeating the mistakes of the past.

According to official IRS data, the top 1% of income earners paid $84 billion more in federal income taxes in 2007 than in 2000 before the Bush tax cuts were passed, 23% more. The share of total federal income taxes paid by the top 1% rose from 37% in 2000, before the Bush tax cuts, to 40% in 2007, after the tax cuts.

In contrast, the bottom half of income earners paid $6 billion less in federal income taxes in 2007 than in 2000, a decline of 16%. The share of federal income taxes paid by the bottom 50% declined from 3.9% in 2000 to 2.9% in 2007.

The Bush tax cuts also included a doubling of the child tax credit from $500 per child to $1,000 per child. Because of that, and the 33% cut in the bottom tax rate, nearly 8 million more people dropped off the federal income tax rolls entirely, paying zero federal income taxes. Indeed, under the Bush tax cuts, the bottom 40% of all income earners not only paid no federal income taxes, as a group on net. By 2009, they were being paid cash by the IRS equal to 10% of all federal income taxes.

These Bush tax cuts did not explode the deficit, as Obama and his echo chamber have alleged. By 2007, the deficit was down to $160 billion, less than 15% of Obamaís deficits today. Total federal revenues soared from $793.7 billion in 2003, when the last of the Bush tax cuts were enacted, to $1.16 trillion in 2007, a 47% increase. Capital gains revenues had doubled by 2005, despite the 25% capital gains rate cut adopted in 2003. Federal revenues rose to 18.5% of GDP by 2007, above the long term, postwar, historical average over the prior 60 years. CBO was projecting surpluses to return indefinitely in 2012 through the end of its projection period in 2018.

You loved the good guys and hated the bad guys. The soundtrack and cinematography were excellent. I would argue that the gore in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction were integral, that he wasn't pulling punches but since the Kill Bill movies he's made it gratuitous and not only unnecessary but off-putting.

The Freeloader Myth

The argument these conservatives are making has two components. First, it is wrong as a matter of civic morality for some people ó let alone large numbers of people ó to contribute nothing to the support of the federal government. Second, this situation is politically dangerous because it means that, for a large number of voters, big government is, or appears to be, free. These voters will therefore support the expansion and oppose the retrenchment of government, voting themselves goodies at other peopleís expense.

The good news is that these fears are overblown. The 47 percent figure does not mean we are near a tipping point. Most of the people included in that figure do make financial contributions to the federal government, and there is no reason to think that nonpayment of income taxes is turning millions of Americans liberal. The bad news is that worrying too much about this number will lead conservatives down an intellectual and political dead end.

Letís say you are truly offended that 47 percent of Americans donít pay income tax. Just complaining wonít fix the problem. All those freeloaders are still out there, dodging their responsibilities as red-blooded taxpaying Americans. 151.7 million Americans paid nothing in 2010. By comparison, 34.8 million tax filers paid no taxes in 1984. The rapid growth of Americans who donít pay income taxes is particularly alarming for the fate of the American form of government, Beach and Tyrrell warned. Coupled with higher spending on government programs, it is already proving to be a major fiscal challenge.
