Dolphins extend GM Randy Mueller's contract

Randy Mueller's contract as general manager of the Miami Dolphins has been extended and his salary will revised, according to a source. Full Story

Successful franchises are built on recognizing and drafting young talent and continuity in the coaching staff.Much of the Dolphins early successes and current successful teams is because of this continuity and getting talented players.

Randy is a proven finder of talent and should be an asset to the organization for years to come. What the Fins really need is to stick with their staff (coaching and front office) and get players that fit their scheme and adjust as needed. Winning will come again to this organization if they quit making drastic changes to the organization.

Extend if warranted, but not now...

<quoted text>Also, his drafts in the past have been pretty good
What? Best one he had was 97 when he got Shawn Springs #3 overall and Walter Jones #6 overall; he didn't get anybody else in that draft. Did you forget that Mueller drafted Mirer #2 overall, McGwire and Bosworth??? He has had a number of drafts where he didn't get one good player, and not a single draft where he got more than 2. The NFL average is 2 good starters a draft.
Josh wrote:
<quoted text>and he has only had ONE draft with the Dolphins so far.
Didn't like many of his picks, especially the Ginn pick...and he ignored our most glaring position of need: LT.

Agreed...I'm not holding last year's debacle against him.
Josh wrote:
<quoted text>The positives I see of Mueller so far is that he likes to stockpile picks and build through the draft. When was the last time a Dolphins draft had 10 picks?
Having a lot of picks is good, but you have to pick good players with them. I like the Satele, Mauia, and the punter pick...don't like any of the rest of them...well, Beck might be ok, but until we fix our offensive line, it won't matter who we have under center...and we didn't fix it...again...for the umpteenth year in a row...
Josh wrote:
<quoted text>He dumped all the underachieving veterans that have been holding us back in returning to greatness(McMichael, Mare, McIntosh, James, etc.)
No, give credit where credit is due, Cameron cut the dead weight, not Mueller.
Josh wrote:
<quoted text>Some bash him for passing on Quinn at #9, but the mighty Quinn didn't even get drafted by anybody until #22(By the Browns who had already PASSED on him earlier).
Not me, I'd rather have Ginn over Quinn...and I didn't want Ginn either...I wanted us to trade down, get more picks, and take Joe Staley, and FINALLY get our franchise LT for the next decade.
Josh wrote:
<quoted text>He got a player(Ginn) that can open up not only the passing game, but the return game.
Ginn will definitely help us in the return game, but he's not going to make it as a receiver...he's a poor route runner, and his hands are marginal. It won't take NFL teams long to figure out he can't get off the jamb...the big physical corners will kick the living crap out of him.
Josh wrote:
<quoted text>Also, many consider Beck just a SLIGHT notch below Quinn and some even think he is on par with him.
We didn't need a QB. That pick would have been MUCH better spent on an offensive lineman.
Josh wrote:
<quoted text>Also, look at the fact that it is only June 26th and SIX of our 10 draft picks are already under contract. Also, there was a report last week that Satele and Mormino are just days away from inking their rookie contracts.
Contracts might be where Mueller is valuable...but I have no faith in his abilities to acquire talent.
Josh wrote:
<quoted text>Mueller is doing a fantastic job, and I am thrilled they extended his contract so he can continue to re-build this team into a champion.
He hasn't done anything for us yet to justify saying he's doing a fantastic job for us yet, and his history shows that as far as talent acquisition goes, he's average at best, and pretty mediocre overall. We'll see soon enough what this draft class will do for us...I'm not going to get my hopes up very much. Ginn will be exciting to watch every time there's a punt or KO, but don't expect much else out of him...#9 overall and $20 mil for a kick returner is a major waste of NLF cap and draft resources in my book.

Contracts are all just crap in the NFL. Why are you guys all upset...They cancel contracts 24/7. The money is not the issue, the issue is people trying to entice Mueller to leave if it does turn out that he is awesome.
Contracts in the NFL benifit the team not the personnel. Ask, Daunte, Ricky Williams, Trent Green, um...nick saban even...of course his contract didn't really matter did it....?
Yeah, that's true...and it's not like his salary counts against the cap or anything...Wayne will just have to buy the 95 foor yacht instead of the 100 footer his wife wanted...the poor guy... Still, I don't like seeing somebody get rewarded until they do something worth getting rewarded for...and I think he botched this past draft big time. We had 3 major areas of need going in: LT, DE, and CB...we didn't fill any of those needs.

We got Abraham Wright(DE) with a 7th round pick and he looks to be a diamond in the rough (pass rusher) type of pick, but it was just mini camp. We also picked up two OL men in the draft. "QB position not needed", are you in a mental ward or just blind. The glaring holes you keep speaking of must be between your ears with the statements you have just made.

I see no reason to give Mueller a raise. The only thing of note he's done in his entire NFL carreer, is fleece Dave Wannstedt out of 2 first round picks for Ricky Williams. Other than that, his BEST drafts have been average at best, and he's had mostly mediocre to completely forgetable ones. There's nothing special about Randy Mueller...any one of us could do just as good a job as far as picking talent goes. Maybe he's good at negotiating contracts or something we don't see in the public eye, but his eye for talent is pretty dismal...he hits on a good player every now and then, and they're always the high picks when he does hit on one...the ones you EXPECT to get a good player from. I'm not impressed with him one bit...I think Spielman was better...and not by much either...
I think Spielman was better?!!

Well... Until they stop sucking wind on the field I won't be buying season tickets anytime soon. Anyone in the front office at Dolphins Stadium hearing that? Refurbished Stadium... GM gets a great contract extension... Team Still Sucks!!! IMHO I think passing up on Brady Quinn was a monumental mistake (and not one made only by the 'fins GM mind you). My prediction... Quinn turns into gold and the 'fins still suck in '07/'08!

Keeping Randy needs to be a priority with the Fins. Let him manage the team and let Cam coach it. That's how the Dolphins did it in the 70s and that's how we'll get back to our old winning ways!

Wright is 245 lbs...he'll be a linebacker in the NFL, not a DE...and a SSSSLLLOOOWWWW one at that. I'll be surprised if he makes the team. I liked the Satele pick, but what we REALLY need, and still do, are both tackle positions, LT in particular…we didn’t draft ANY tackles. And no, we didn't need a QB. We had DC, Lemon, and Vick. DC is a 3 time pro bowler...let the man heal, and he'll be just fine. Instead, we went out and got Green...we put a 37 year old who is one more concussion from retirement behind a shaky line that's a work in progress...I hope he ups his life insurance policy before the season starts...JT is right, one good hit, and his egg will be scrambled...how much you wanna bet it will be a DE coming off the corner on Carey's side??? We had to pay DC $5.5 mil whether he plays here or not...so we pay another injury risk guy who is also an old man another $5 mil to operate behind a weak line...can you say, making the same mistake twice two years running??? I'd have rather we opened the season with Lemon, back him up with Vick, and let DC heal COMPLETELY, even if he spends the whole year on IR. Trent Green had the same exact major triple ligament knee injury DC had, and look what he did after he healed…the difference between the two, is DC was rushed back, Green was not. Instead, we're letting DC go, and going with the old man who had a rough campaign last year, and who I think is clearly in decline. Well, we made our bed, now we have to lay in it...at least Lemon and Vick could run like heck...we give up a cheap Vick for an expensive Green and Beck...and both will have major problems till we fix our line.

Speilman wasn't that bad...keep in mind WANNY called all the shots until his final year, not Rick. Rick's one and only draft brought us Carey, Hadnot, Poole, and Pope...it wasn't Rick's fault Poole tore up his knee...IMHO, he would have been a really good corner too. Speilman was to Wanny what Mueller was to Satan...he gave Wanny advice, and he was ignored. Now if you're going to give Mueller a pass on his first 2 years here because Satan called all the shots, the you gotta do the same for Rick...let's be fair now. From what I've heard, Speilman wanted Drew Brees...Wanny took Fletcher...Speilman wanted Anquan Boldin, Wanny took Moore...and Speilman wanted to trade for Trent Green...Wanny wanted Jay Feidler. If a GM makes reccomendations, and the HC ignores him and makes his own choices, you can't blame the GM. I think Rick got a raw deal here...it will be interesting to see what he does for the Vikes...but who calls the shots in Minny, him, or Childress???

Green can read a defense & get rid of the ball quickly unlike “DC”.Cam knows the O-line is a work in progress, we need a sharp pocket QB who stays put (easier to block for), not a scrambler who relies on his arm and legs(not his brain).“DC” is a poor fit for what Cam is trying to accomplish.

What about the 2nd rounder for A.J. Feely. Or trading away Adewale Ogunleye? Or acquiring David Boston? The list goes on & on.
