Vicki, what NFL draft blunder? Are you talking about something when he was with the Saints? As far as I am concerned he did a GREAT job with his first Dolphins draft.
Good news that the Dolphins extended him and now have their coach/GM tandem locked up through at least 2009.

HOW DO YOU KNOW BECAUSE THEY LOOKED SOOO GOOD IN SHORTS AND HELMETS. YOU WONT KNOW IF THIS DRAFT WAS WORTH HALF A SH*T UNTIL BOUT 3 YEARS DOWN THE LINE

Sure, give the guy a chance to prove himself this year, I'm all for that.

But give him a ton of money and a contract extension till 2009 BEFORE he has proven himself? Not so much.

Excellent point, Jack. Saban makes a convenient scapegoat because he's no longer here. But Mueller is as culpable as anyone else in the personnel decisions of the past two years. I've never bought the BS that Saban had total control of the franchise. Why would they even have a GM position if it was completely powerless?

How you can say Mueller was as culpable as anyone else is nonsense. Saban ruled as a dictator, was not personable or approachable. Mueller was just there to fetch Saban coffee to go with his Little Debbie cookies. He was powerless under Saban which is why he probably was considering other options. Wouldn't you?

Like I've said before, ad nauseum: Wayne Huizenga is the single common denominator in all of this nonsense.
He hired Jimmy Johnson, Dave Wannstadt, Saban, Mueller and Cameron. He hired Cameron simply because his name appeared on media short-lists of prospective coaching candidates.
When everyone else above Cameron declined the job or found work elsewhere, he simply threw a bunch of money at the CamMan to quiet his critics.
Huizenga should have at the very least, subjected Cameron to an IQ test before he hired him.
Was Jimmy Johnson really that bad???
Last I checked Jason Taylor, Zack Thomas, and Pat Surtain are still Pro Bowl type players. Sam Madison was for years. Daryl Gardner was pretty good also just ask Zack Thomas.
His biggest error was putting to much faith in guys like Cecil Collins and JJ Johnson, but I wouldn't call him nonsense. Especially when there are guys he drafted 10 years ago still playing at such high levels.

<quoted text>You do realize that his original contract runs out in less then a year. If they didn't extend it now, they could miss out on keeping him past this season. This move to extend him makes complete sense.
But his contract would run out AFTER the season is over, right? At which point, management could assess if he's worth retaining. If this draft proves to be homer, we would have adequate time to re-sign him. If this draft proves to be a bust, we could cut him. I don't know. I guess one year isn't quite enough to assess someone as GM (I am of course referring to the fact that Randy Mueller was a mere figure-head under Nick Saban). Maybe that's why he was re-signed. It just seems to me as waaay to early to make a decision like this. Thanks for your reply.

Come on.
Nick Saban had TOTAL CONTROL over personnel.
Mueller only provided information on the players.
That was my whole point. He have NO track record of Randy as a Phin GM. We agree on this.

How do you know what the results will be when none of the players he drafted this year have played a single down? He didn't have full control last year when Dicky Satan was coaching so you can't base anything on last year. Satan had COMPLETE control of the team. How many times did you get to see RM interview last year? None. Give the guy a chance. Remember, RM is an offensive GM that will do just fine with the fins. I'm glad he got his extension and he never took that job offer earlier in the year. It was a good lock. Go fins!
He has been given a chance for 2 years now to demonstrate his value add.

Either he had NO CONTROL as many of your message board wiz kids have revealed, or, he did something positive.

If he had NO CONTROL, as the message board insider nose bleed seat wiz kids have shared, than why extend until his draft plays itself out a bit?

If he did something positive, just exactly what the hell was it? The fact that he cut the over the hill gang that Saban assembled? Give RM some credit. If he couldn't figure out that that was needed, we needed to do a pulse check on him (and the owner more appropriately).

The absolute worse case scenario by not extending now is to pay more money later or lose him. Is this organization and this town THAT afraid to lose RM with the recent performance?

It just smacks of another Huizenga out of touch move, a la Wannstache.

Somebody, please splain this to me, Lucy.

So now the guy who didn't have the cajones to insert himself into important decisions, devoid of the evil Nick Satan, is going to rescue the franchise. Extensions for everybody! Extensions pour toute la monde!

Look at his drafts in Seattle and New Orleans. He is 1 of the better GMs in football. He drafted Walter Jones,Ahman Green,Jake Delhomme,Mark Bulger,Charles Grant,Will Smith,Duece McAllister, etc.
In a much shorter carreer, WannSpiel drafted Chambers, McMike, the Bullfrog, Carey, and Hadnot too...hitting on one or two high picks in a draft is something anybody can do...getting 2 good quality starters every draft is the NFL AVERAGE...you start getting 3 and 4 good quality starters in a draft, and doing that regularly, on top of always getting at least 2, NOW you're good. Now you tell me how many drafts Mueller had where he got those 3 and 4 good long term starters, and compare that number against the number of drafts where he didn't get ANYBODY of note, or just one starter. You're going to find that list tilted SHARPLY in the one and none category. I think the best draft Mueller ever had was 97 when he got Walter Jones and Shawn Springs...but those were both first round picks...HIGH ones too, Springs #3 overall, Jones #6 overall...he didn't get anybody else. We are talking about the same man who also drafted Rick Mirer #2 overall...he also bombed out on Dan McGwire at #16 overall, and didn't get a single player in that whole draft...not one...nor in the Mirer draft...or in the Brian Bosworth draft...and a bunch of others in Seattle...in fact, I go through their drafts, and he has no 3 or more player ones there, or in New Orleans...2 is the best he's done, and he only has a couple of those...he's mostly a one guy and none GM...I stand by my assessment: he's average at best, and mostly pretty mediocre, and he's made some MAJOR draft day blunders with VERY high picks.

Hey I always wanted to know what it felt like to have the first overall pick in the Draft. Remember Randy brought us C Pep, Morris, Feeley, Lemon and a slew of draft choices that never panned out. Cool!

So I hope I am terribly wrong, but I have a bad feeling about this.

Contracts are all just crap in the NFL. Why are you guys all upset...They cancel contracts 24/7. The money is not the issue, the issue is people trying to entice Mueller to leave if it does turn out that he is awesome.
Contracts in the NFL benifit the team not the personnel. Ask, Daunte, Ricky Williams, Trent Green, um...nick saban even...of course his contract didn't really matter did it....?

I don't understand what is happening with this team. He needs to prove what he can do and his track record has not been that good. They should have waited until the end of the year before deciding to extend his deal. At least he does not count against the salary cap and can be axed just like Cameron at the end of the year with these horrible personnel decisions.

This just shows more and more what a clueless organization this is. Let's hope for an 0-16 record. Cam gets fired and Mueller and this team starts from scratch!

Again, look at the contract as a good thing. It means the Dolphins have control over Mueller if things go well. This is not an endorsement of greatnes. This is a corporation making sure it has control over its personnel by bringing them into the fold in case a competitor tries to get cheeky.
It the titans pulled Mueller away this year, it was something I recall that was screwed up in the contract that wold have allowed it to happen.....think about it. Lets end this blog and start a new one about how NY city is a crap town with smelly bumbs and a transit system that can't seem to figure out how to keep the lights from flickering.
