<quoted text> Vokoun can always be traded and there's a good possibility of that. Jokinen's just a disease that hurt both the Panthers and the Coyotes.
Vokoun is currently the 7th highest paid goalie in the NHL. In order (in millions):

Lundqvist:$6.875
Luongo:$6.75
Khabibulin:$6.75
Giguere:$6
Kiprusoff:$5.833
Turco:$5.7
Vokoun:$5.7
Huet:$5.625
Nabokov:$5.375
Brodeur:$5.2
Fleury:$5

Of those, Huet is signed until 2013, but Khabibulin is a UFA this summer, so one of them is gone as Chicago won't spend that much on two guys.(Chicago tried to move Khabibulin before and got no takers, so its likely that he won't be re-signed) Not on that list and earning less than $5 million are a series of guys who will be UFA's this summer, including Fernandez, Roloson and Biron. So you have 4 pretty good goalies who will be unrestricted free agents and of them only Khabibulin will get money that is at or above what Vokoun is getting now. And don't forget that Anderson is a UFA and won't near the amount any of those guys get.

That's why trading Vokoun won't be an easy task. He is very expensive considering that he is not considered among the league's elite and there are other guys who will cost less on the UFA market, including Anderson.

I can assume by lack of response that no one disagrees with any of my recent comments for a change? Well, good, that's settled.

Glad you've seen the light.

<quoted text> You could clearly see the improvement from the 3rd period collapses of last year.....
If you watched the Blackhawks-Clagary game last night you saw a prime example of why sitting back in the third period with a lead and stifling your own offense is a bad idea. Instead of continuing to attack and force the play deep in Chicago's end, Calgary played the same way Jacques Martin used to have the Panthers play (and Keenan too). It's old school and while the playoffs are all about team defense, when you more easily give up a third of the ice and try to defend only two-thirds, it comes back to bite you with late game collapses. That is one of the biggest changes instituted by DeBoer and why this year's team had fewer third period collapses. It wasn't the personnel, but rather the strategy, though the players do have to buy into the system and do it consistently.

As usual, more nonsense and no effort at thoughtful counterpoint from the idiot from Pompano. You're a bore no matter how many names you feel you need to use.

Actually, we're watching the Marlins tearing it up through their first games. You see, some wish their teams well and when the season is over they move on. The BAC is like a big sports bar, I watch a game, eat and have a few beers. Sometimes I even catch a T-shirt.

The Florida Panthers have offically become the Los Angeles Clippers & Detroit Lions..........how's that taste?
BTW,
I'm going to games 3 & 4 of Sharks-Ducks;
I'm not a fan of either team,
and I don't care who wins.
I miss playoff hockey & I hope every playoff series goes 7 games!
What are you doing for the playoffs?
Waiting for those big Panther offseason moves?

Not sure I totally agree with either of you. There was improvement and yes, I was very happy to see where this team got to in one season post Martin. What I didn't like was we reached a certain point and then nothing happened. Some great players were put on waivers and we did nothing? Are you telling me that some of these guys wouldn't have been an upgrade to the team? I see the Miami Dolphins constantly picking up players, cutting players, bringing in guys for tryouts and building depth. They scour the smaller colleges looking for the gem in the late rounds of the draft. This is how to address the present and the future at the same time. I already got the press release about Martin and the team and I know all about rebuilding the Amerks but come on, half their team was our lines last year and they still came in last. Despite the success this year, the Panthers should have some serious problems to address and there is no time to coast. How will JM handle increased scoring and solve the worst SOG issue without something radical? I guess when JayBo leaves, we can blame it on him.

Red, you cannot blame the present coach and team for all of the ills of the past. Mistakes have been made in the past, trades have been made that should not have been made, acquisitions failed or were never made when they should have been made, but how long are you going to live in the past instead of looking to the future? This past season was the best Panthers hockey I have seen in a long time. Not to where it should be, but better than before. To me, that's improvement and I'll take it where I can get it. We have a great new coach, some young stars in Booth and Frolik, two good goalies, and some good d-men. Can you see nothing positive? Do you really think it is productive to continually harp on the past mistakes rather than looking forward to a more positive future? Or is everything completely bleak in your world?
And BTW, I still predict that JM will be gone before long.

This team has far less depth among its prospects that has been discussed. They do have a few good recent draft picks, but those kids are only first graduating from Jrs. Best of bunch might be Markstrom, the goalie, but he's still a bit short on maturity as evidenced by his play against Team Canada in the World Jr Championships. On the Amerks, except for Repik I don't think anyone is ready for the NHL. Matthias had a terrible year, with just 10 goals and 10 assists, and a horrible minus-34 rating.(And if he doesn't pan out as a pro, that would leave the team with zero in return for Luongo.)

The biggest weakness is at center for the Panthers. Right now they have Weiss, Campbell and Kreps. The Horton at center experiment never really panned out and even Martin and DeBoer have said he needs to go back to playing on the wing.
They will also need a goalie, as they will have no backup.

Right now the Panthers are commited to $38 million in salary cap payroll for 2009-10, and the cap is expected to be around $57 million again. That leaves about $19 million to re-sign Booth (who is a RFA), replace Bouwmeester, fill the second goalie slot, fill the 3 open forward slots vacated by UFA's Zednik, Peltonen and Dvorak, plus fill at least one or two of the 3 open defense slots vacated by UFA's Boynton, Skrastins and Cullimore. Actually, the Panthers have just 3 defensemen under contract for next season - McCabe, Allen and Ballard - which means that all the emphasis on strengthening the defense last summer is almost back where it started.

Talk all you want about improvement this past season, but the Panthers have lots of rebuilding to do on its roster to fill lots of holes.

Drunk, I actually do agree with most all of what you say. The Panthers improved this season and were exciting to watch. But they didn't make that final push or the necessary offensive acquisitions. So now this offseason is critical. They need a center, they need to improve on offense, and your statement that they have to solve the SOG issue is entirely correct. They cannot coast in the off season. I would love to see them bring in a new dynamic GM to really run in the off season. I am not a JM hater, I actually like the guy. But it is time for a new aggressive GM to match the intensity of Pete DeBoer and get this team on fire. The first key issue is what happens with Bouw---everyone is counting him as gone, I am not so sure. We'll know soon enough.

The OWNER Alan Cohen said last week "the season was a success".

THERE IT IS, GUYS

That is the problem.

After 9 years of failure, the message from the very top of the organization is: Failure Is Acceptable.

You beleive suddenly things are going to improve?

They have this guy and that guy coming up, they will address this and address that, they will use this money to sign this FA and that FA.

Right.

Why do Panther All-Stars never want to stay in Fla?

A real owner; an owner that wants to win, will send a message to the entire organization, to management, to the coaches, to the players:

He should have said:

"This season was not a success. Our goal is the playoffs, and anything less is unacceptable."

But, hey, it's Alan Cohen......
Hockey's Donald Sterling (Clippers).

He's already got your deposit for 09-10....
He's now busy tweeking the panther patrol to shoot cheaper free t-shirts over the boards.....

BTW,
Really enjoying the playoffs....
Going to Game 3 of Sharks-Ducks.....

I cant argue with Alan Cohen. JM's Jokinen trade turned out great as well as the hire of DeBoer and the Frolik pick. Clearly, the team was much improved and is on the right track. I mean..... after the Jokinen trade who thought we'd score more goals without him?...or be in the playoff hunt at game 81?....or have our best record in many years?

Is the team still on that track? Of that rebuilt defense made up of puck moving defensemen, only 3 remain signed with the team. The entire defense now consists of just McCabe, Ballard and Allen. Boynton (who they don't even want back), Skrastins, Bouwmeester & Cullimore are all UFA's, while Eminger is a RFA.

Also, one of their two goalies is a UFA, and so are Peltonen, Dvorak and Zednik. David Booth is also a RFA and if they don't get him signed before the free agency period begins, you can be assured that some team will tender an offer sheet for him. Oh, and don't forget that they are stuck with McLean and his $1.7 million contract for another year.

Not sure what track they are on, but the train station still seems far away.

So you think Cohen should only be judged based on events of the past 12 months? Does he get a free pass for anything outside of that year?

Ahh Irvinian, perhaps it is something in the putrid air of Irvine that makes you post this way. You read one statement from Cohen, then you make up a statement that Cohen did not even say. Is this how business is done in the leftist confines of Irvine?

Actualy, what Cohen said (and you know it) was that although he was disappointed in the Panthers not making the playoffs, the season wasn't a total failure. And, he said, the Panthers played with more intensity than they have in years. I must agree with Cohen's comments, even if doing so will incur the wrath of the Irvine socialists.

So, really, perhaps in Irvine you can mis-quote to suit your argument, but here in sunny South Florida you need to be accurate before you unfairly criticize. It's the American way. Irvine is still part of America, right?

Man !! The playoffs are so much fun!!

Watching great hockey games every day!!

Game 3 - Rangers-Capitals right now!!
And how about those Ducks?!!?
Going to Game 3 Tuesday.
When's the last time you went to a playoff game?
Rhetorical question: 2000.

It's been soooo long since my fav team has been involved in these great playoffs, it's even more fun, because I don't care who wins !!
Just love hockey!!

Don't know why you guys take personal shots or make fun of where a guy lives.
I live in Newport Coast, which is nestled between Newport Beach & Irvine.
Google it, and don't get too jealous that I see the Pacific Ocean every day.

The Panthers record since Alan Cohen bought the team is not subjective.
Niether is the fact that every all-star wants to leave and the the team I once loved, is nothing more than a farm team....

Ahh Irvinian, I hold you in the deepest regard, you know that, don't you? And therefore, I splain to you, we have Center Ice in Florida. Yes, it is true, we can watch the Bruins crush the Habs, the Rangers school Ovechkin (hopefully) and we can even watch leftist coast hockey should we want to (not likely). So whilst you are tilting your Che Guevara hat and wearing your John Lennon communist spectacles while sipping your latte, realize that we in sunny South Florida know that you are jealous of South Floridians and that you miss this beautiful area so much that you must post on our paper's web site and follow our team. We do not do the converse because we have no care or concern for Irvine or thereabouts. We are happy here, but alas, it appears clear that you are not out there in Irvinia, as you are obsessed by us here in South Florida.

Good to see the blind rah-rah fans with pea brains continue to return to this forum...

Face it my pitiful friends.

Alan Cohen and Yormark just fleeced you for another year.

When will you learn?

It's all about owning the arena and NOT about icing a winning team.

This is not the worst NHL team based on playoff track record. In a League where over half of the teams make playoffs, the Panturds' last playoff win was in 1996!

Digest that while you watch your Gord Murphy slow-moes during the 'Year of the Rat re-runs.

See ya during next season's Panturd's annual beatdown.

Pathetic!
