I have contacted Kaplan on several occasions and have had no luck with a explanation only exuses and promises to call back. I had alot of trouble recieving my living exspense loans and I would call often. They assured me everything was ok but that the last check before graduation would need to be held to make sure there was no balance on my account.

They finally released the check in May 2006 after I graduated. I waited on my diploma and it was never sent instead they billed me for 372.00. I asked how this could be done because they had held my 1000.00 check to make sure everything was covered. They explained that they had made a error and not charged my pell grant enough money for my intern class. I left several messages and recieved no response from a supervisor.

Today October 23, 2006 I recieved a letter from a collection agency asking that I pay 2600.00 This is crazy no one ever contacted me from Kaplan about this amount and the 372.00 was not even resolved. I called and recorded my conversation today and the woman I spoke with said that my pell had not been dispersed within 120 days and that by federal law they weren't allowed to credit my account after 120 days. The terms were August and November 2005. I would like to know why no one will give me a reasonable explanation and accept the blame of their mistake.

They said all my documents were turned in and she didn't understand what happened but how can I be charged without being informed by Kaplan but instead a collection agency for money that wasn't owed.

This was a waste of my 10,000 dollars worth of student loans as well. I dont even have a diploma. How can they get away with this? Now I am waiting AGAIN for a supervisor to look everything over Maybe I should have contacted a lawyer first. I am afraid they will try to cover up their scheme. On top of everything they said the pell money was there but for SOME REASON it wasn't applied. This is so ABSURD! If anyone kknows what steps might resolve this contact me.

I never had taken any classes through this university, I just wanted information. five months later I get a bill for a class that I never had taken. I submited 2 dispute forms, contacted the states atorneys office in Michigan and Arizona, and contacted the collection agency and still have not gotten any ansers. When I call the University and give my name and personal information so that they can look me up in thier database, without fail I get hung up on.

My Education with Kaplan started in April of 2005. At that time I spoke with an Academic Adviser who assured me that (1) I would not have any unexpected bills showing up and (2) that I would have a total student loan of around $26,000 when I was finished with school. Sounded great so I agreed to enroll.
I was assigned a student adviser and together we worked out my degree plan, major, minor, and chose the classes for me to take. From that point on I could not get in contact with him. I would leave messages for him to call me back, but he never would. It came time to enroll for the classes and I had still not heard from him so I chose to talk to the 'next available student adviser'.
At that point was was told about the Accelerated Scholars Award, and was told that if I take three classes I would be eligible for this scholarship. I then contacted Financial Aid to ensure that I would be covered for three classes. I was told that I was indeed eligible. I then contacted the student adviser and enrolled for three classes, faxed the paperwork to the school, and began my next term on schedule.
The following two terms I went through exactly the same steps, contacting the student adviser, then financial aid, and back to the student adviser again to enroll. Each time I was assured that I was good to go, so to speak.
At the end of the term I received a letter from Kaplan claiming that I owed them nearly $1,851 and that I had to pay that money before I could continue with school. At this point I contacted Kaplan to find out why I owed this money. I was told that I was only covered by financial aid to take three classes once per quarter, and now I owe them for the last two terms. I explained that I had spoken with someone in financial aid each term and was assured that everything was OK and I could take these extra classes because of the scholarship.
At that time I was told that the scholarships had not yet been applied to my account. From that point on I received statements that remained unchanged, until August when I received a statement from them claiming that I had an account balance of $1,851 and a past due amount of $3, 975. I contacted my Financial aid officer to find out what the problem was and he told me that he was going to do a complete check to make sure that the money paid by financial aid and my student loans were going to the correct places.
I then received an email saying that he had done all he could do and that I was was 1 credit from being a level 3 to absorb the costs. At that time I mentioned the Scholarships. He had no idea what I was talking about and NO WHERE on my account had it been stated that I had these scholarships. Later that day I received an email from my new student adviser introducing herself and explaining that they were working on the account issues and that she would get back to me ASAP. In the mean time I was taken off the blacklist and allowed to go to school for the term.
About a week later I received notice that her supervisor needed me to send in all the forms that I had originally faxed over so that they could get the scholarships credited to my account ASAP. I faxed them over, but was told a day later they were never received. I faxed them again, and this time was told they were received and being reviewed. A week after that I was told that they were approved and were in the process of being applied to my account. In the mean time I am receiving my confirmation letters for my student loans where they are making payments to Kaplan in the amounts of $3,500 and $4,000, the final payment being in 2007.
The next term begins November 8, 2006. At this point, I have already begun payments for that term. I received a statement in the mail from Kaplan stating that now I owe them not only the $3,975, but I also now have an account balance of $4,000 (up from $1,851 just 3 months before).I tried to contact my Financial Adviser but to no avail.

During admissions I made sure that I would not accumulate any out of pocket expenses while earning my degree. I made it very clear that I could not afford to have any out of pocket expenses during the time that I would be in school. I was assured that I would not because my Pell grants would cover a portion of the tuition and whatever was left would be covered by my student loans.
At the end of my fourth quarter I received a message from Kaplan telling me that my account was 'severely past due' even though 1) I should never have accrued any out of pocket expenses and 2) if I had been accruing a balance for 4 quarters the University should have told me before it got to this point.
At this point, I owed about $2,000. I am in school because I want to improve my financial situation? I don’t have $2,000 sitting around for whenever Kaplan decides to block me from classes. They now say I owe $9,000.
For two years its been a constant battle with Kaplan. I was selected for verification twice in a row by Kaplan. I am still dealing with their incompetence. My accelerated scholarship was not applied to my account 3 times! My credits were never packaged correctly no matter how diligent and proactive I’ve been. I have proof of all of this but no room to show it here. Please don’t attend Kaplan’s online university. I have been blocked from my classes over and over again and when I’m not being blocked I’m being harassed by the financial aid and student accts departments.

I have a question not related to this. So please if anyone can help, I'll greatly appreciated it. Does Pinnacle Financial or any debt collector agency have the right to call and demand a certain amount of money to be paid over the phone? I attend a university, and still have outstanding payments from last semester that I haven't pay for. They keep calling about needing $323.00 to be pay off now. And at the same time, I'm still recieving my bill statements from the univeristy I attended.

I don't have any personal experience with attending the university, however... I'm a senior at a university in Texas. I've attended here 3 1/2 years, and never looked into another school since I enrolled here. The past month or so, I've been getting solicitation calls from this Kaplan University, saying that I requested information on attending their online school. I'm already attending a well known private school, one that actually has verifiable buildings and a real history, so why would I want to go to an online school with an accreditation that means next to nothing?

These people are calling my cell phone, emailing me, sending me all kinds of crap. They call me at work, they call me at home, and they call me on weekends. I've asked them several times to remove me from their database, as I'm not interested, nor have I signed up for anything, but the sales calls persist.

Do you really want to go to a school that has to employ telemarketers to harass people? If that is how they get students, I think it speaks volumes about the education that they provide.

The truth is everybody wants to go to school and continue their education. Most people are easily discouraged and come up with any excuse to quit or never start. It is not easy but with hard efforts come the true rewards. Most comments here I believe are from students that did not have the will or the intelligence to continue. Every student get to review the funding before they are accepted unlike most school and a financial plan is sent to them BEFORE they get accepted.

I have to agree with Dr. Spoon. I completed my BS from Kaplan and can't seem to complain with the exception of writing long papers and staying up late to complete things.

In life we make what we want of things - you can chose to make your path walk it and live it and jump over the hurdles that life throws at you look at your mistakes take responsibility and only grow.

I haven't found one school that doesn't have complaints. I haven't found one company that doesn't have complaints.

In life always no matter what you be in control - read the fine print and remember if it is to good to be true than it probably is.

I hope everyone that has had issues gets resolutions. It stinks when you know you're in the right but can't seem to get resolution. Again when you know you're right it stinks.

You make some valid points. But I am pursuing my second B.S. degree in criminal justice. I am a student with a straight 4.0 GPA and am not receiving any financial aid and have always paid my student bills on time and in full even though I make $12.00 an hour and live with my parents so I can afford school. So when I am bounced from one financial aid rep to the next and given contradictory information that still leaves me with a bill of $1600.00 that no one can explain then I am more than discouraged to stop attending. It is a fallacy on your part to assume that most of the people here are not diligent enough or do not take their education seriously. There are some serious issues with the way Kaplan is processing the payments they receive from students. My case is simple since I have no financial aid, grants or loans, yet they still cannot figure out what is going on and give me a clear answer. I do not know what else to do or where to turn to. If anyone has any advice please let me know.

Actually That is how it is suppost to be, but Kaplan has taken matter in their own hands and have witnessed them making students send in their verification docs when they have been given a tuition voucher and technology fee waiver. I like the education, but I assure you they are going against the dept of education so there! I HAVE SEEN THEM

It is surprising to see how many posts here are similiar to what I am dealing with right now. I attended Kaplan in 2006 to March 2007. At which time I paid my remaining balance of my account. I was sent a statement sheet showing a credit of $5,555 in June. In July of 2007 I recevied a check in the amount of $5,555. When I called Kaplan (unfortunately I did not record the phone call) the financial aid dept stated that an error on their part I was charged for classes that I did not take so this amount was to refund that.
In February of 2008 I received a phone call from Pinnacle Financial stating that a collection ahd been sent to them from Kaplan in the amount of $6,600. They stated it was classes taked from March to June of 2007. I sent Pinnacle a copy of my disenrollment email to my advisor and the acknowlegde that I received back from my advisor along with a copy of the check sent to me and various other information. Upon reviewing my file they said that Kaplan was indeed in error and to contact them for the problem to be fixed. I contacted Kaplan Financial office and was told the the case would be reviewed. In March of 2008 Pinnacle contacted me again saying that Kaplan said they were incorrect again and that it money owed prior to my departure. I asked for a copy of the ledger which Pinnacle received.
April 1st of 2008 I received a phonecall from Pinnacle saying that this had been reported on my credit report and that I would not be able to received anything in writing either from Kaplan or them. They also stated that the amount owed could only be paid over the phone by credit card or bank account after which I would receive a zero balance letter.
I never received anything from Kaplan after the check in July of 2007 and have tried contacting the Financial Aid department for more information but am unable to reach to person in charge of my case.
During my time at Kaplan I never took out a loan of any type and was paying everything out of pocket to avoid winding up in a situation like this. We will see how it turns out.

Keep in mind, this is exactly the kind of service you will get from this school ... my husband is going through the same thing right now, trying to UN-enroll.

Hey dum-dum ... did your Kaplan education improve your reading skills? Doesn't look like it. Re-read her post ... she said "A university in Texas" not THE University OF Texas.

You are a prime example of the expemplary, superbly educated telephone hacks that work at this Washington Post University. When you get fired for not meeting your harassment goals, maybe you can get a job writing for the Star or the National Enquirer? You'll fit right in.
