Revenge led to burning of Deerfield 15-year-old, police say
Five youths arrested in attack that burned teen over 80 percent of his body

DEERFIELD BEACH

The teenage squabble involved a video game and a bicycle. It blossomed into revenge during a chance encounter and ended in the near-fatal torching of a 15-year-old Deerfield Beach boy, the Broward Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

Some of the teens charged in the blaze laughed when investigators confronted them about the attack, the Sheriff's Office said.

A gang of four 15-year-old boys and one's 13-year-old brother accosted Michael Brewer and condemned him as a snitch for calling the cops on their leader, whom the Sheriff's Office identified as the local bully.

Brewer tried to leave. They doused him with alcohol and set him afire. Flames burned 80 percent of his body, especially his torso and arms, and seared off much of his hair, including his eyebrows, family members said.

"Pour it on him!" investigators quoted the organizer of the attack, Matthew Bent, 15, as saying when accomplices splashed Brewer with the alcohol.

Brewer tore off his shirt and jumped in an apartment complex pool. He later was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's burn center, where he is listed in critical condition with mostly second-degree burns.

"This is just an incredibly cruel thing, that anybody could have possibly done this to another human being" said Dr. Nicholas Namias, director of the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Burn Center.

Sheriff Al Lamberti called it "a case of retaliation."

According to Broward Sheriff's Sgt. Steve Feeley, the feud started when Brewer borrowed $40 from Bent to buy a video game. He never paid him back. In return Bent tried to steal a custom,$500 bike belonging to Brewer's father Sunday night. Brewer called police, and Bent was arrested as he tried to run off with the bike.

Bent, released from the juvenile center Monday morning, didn't go to school that day. He and Brewer attend Deerfield Beach Middle School. Brewer also stayed home, fearing an encounter with Bent. Brewer, a seventh-grader, has been kept back at least two grades, family members said.

About 3 p.m., Bent met up with four friends: brothers Denver and Jeremy Jarvis, 15 and 13 respectively; Steven Shelton, 15; and Jesus Mendez, 15. All are from Pompano Beach but Shelton, who lives in Deerfield Beach. The neighborhood shared by the teens straddles the two cities.

Near a wall by the Lime Tree Apartments in the 400 block of Southeast 13th Court, the boys found a bottle of rubbing alcohol, police said. They entered the complex's pool area and by chance came upon Brewer, who was waiting for a friend.

Brewer tried to walk away. Deputies said the group surrounded him.

"Snitch, snitch!" taunted Bent, who ordered Denver Jarvis to pour the alcohol on Brewer.

Mendez took a lighter from his pocket and flicked it at the drenched teen. Brewer and a bush nearby caught fire instantly. Covered in flames, Brewer ran 150 yards to the pool and jumped in. When a rescue team arrived he was sitting in a pool chair.

"This is one of the most heinous crimes I've ever seen," Lamberti said.

Nearby teens who witnessed the attack reported it to police.

"The kids from the neighborhood, they were scared of this kid Bent," Lamberti said.

Bent and the Jarvis brothers were arrested Monday night. Bent and Denver Jarvis laughed under questioning, Feeley said. Only Mendez, arrested along with Shelton on Tuesday, showed remorse, the deputy said.

All were charged with aggravated battery. Mendez also faces a charge of attempted second-degree murder. Should Brewer die, all five could face murder charges, Lamberti said. All have previous juvenile records, which are sealed.

On Tuesday, Bent and the Jarvis brothers appeared before Circuit Judge Elijah Williams. They were each ordered held in a juvenile detention center for 21 days and will not be allowed to speak to one another, Williams said. They were also ordered not to contact Brewer.

Lawyers for the younger Jarvis brother and for Bent said their clients were "minimally involved" in the attack. Attorney Stephen Melnick said Jeremy Jarvis was "just there. He was not accused of actually doing it."

Attorney Gordon Weekes, representing Bent, said his client "understands the gravity of the charges."

Namias, the burn center director, said people have survived burns as severe as Brewer's, but only after slow and excruciatingly painful treatment. The teen has been sedated while doctors tended to his burns.

"This is just the beginning, if all goes well, of many months in the ICU and the hospital, many operations of skin grafting, many sessions of occupational therapy," he said. "This is a life-changing event for this young man."

Where did that kid get $40 bucks to loan another kid to buy a video game? Is he selling drugs? Obviously they are a teen gang. Must be doing something for money.

No the victim borrowed $40 dollars and the gang leader tried to steal the victim's father's bike of his porch and they called the police. This is in retaliation for being a snitch.

Now this gang leader will know the real meaning incarceration. As a juvie no harm done. But it will get real for him very soon. The sooner the better.

All boys involved need to face the jury. Because all the boys involved once could have put a stop to it and not one of them did. And if the victim dies they should all be tried for murder.

ALL OF THEM. ALL OF THEM MONSTERS.

I think that person meant an eye for an eye is what the gang members deserve back.

Hope the jury feels that way. An eye for an eye. Not only should these kids serve time so should their parents. And if not the parents names, pictures and address should be made public and they should lose their jobs over it. They should be shunned by everyone.

I love how parents always say my boy was a good boy and never did anything wrong. There is always a first time. And there are always signs. But parents will defend their sons even if they saw them commit murder.

I know. I've been the victim of a cop's son and his little clic. And she'll defend him to the death.

Mother of boy charged in burning 15-year-old speaks out

DEERFIELD BEACH - The mother of one of the teens accused of setting the 15-year-old on fire said she feels sorry for the victim, WFOR-Ch. 4 reports.

"I feel so sorry for [Michael Brewer], I really do. And it's sad. It really is," Patricia Hollis, the mother of 15-year-old Steven Shelton told WFOR. "...My prayers go out to him and his family."

Shelton is accused along with four others of attacking another boy, Michael Brewer, on Monday afternoon. Hollis said that her son did not have anything to do with the incident, despite a police report that states that Shelton admitted to being a part of the group that approached Brewer, WFOR reported.

"As far as I know, no he didn't," Hollis told WFOR. "Wrong place at the wrong time."

I hope all the parents are reading this-

As usual YOUR kid did nothing wrong
Congratulations!!!

You've all failed miserably as parents role models and humans.

What important reality shows have you been watching all this time to miss what heartless monsters your offsprings were growing into?
Pathetic losers and scum bags of our communities
pro creating with abandon then abandoning the results.
To the rest of you with a child second grade or younger-start paying a little more attention, share a little more of your valuable time and love and educate your child. They'll only be what you let them. This story is proof of that.

This is ok, in fact it is probably good it happened now, I mean none of these potential sperm donors were actually going to make a contribution to society, were they? OK, so we loose a few day laborers, but look at the bright side, they have a small chance of breeding! Although the victim did not deserve what happened to him, his hands are not exactly clean either, he most likely learned the " borrow money and never pay it back scheme" from his mom and dad, I mean his father and mother are out of work but dad has a $500 custom bicycle? Geez, it looks like a circus train derailment and the freaks all landed in Pompano and Deerfield.......

Young people today don't even know what disrespect is. Some people even think if you speak to them it's dispresect. That's a gang mindset and the police are supposed to take note of it. If you are the son of a cop and it gets covered up by the parent then another cop will take note of it. Jus keepin it real.

It annoys the hell out of me when I hear parents referring to these kinds of snod-nosed brats as, "Good Boys". But the truth is, that parents - especially mothers - are usually the last to know. Bad guys usually straighten up around the elders who support them. Problem is, even when such elders see a problem, they always shrug it off as some kind of "phase" they're going through and as always, it's at the expense of someone else.
So yes, they are just as responsible as the brats they allow to go from phase to phase uninterrupted!!!!!

This is the fault of desegregation. When the blacks were kept in their own run down sections of town, their criminal ways did not rub off on good kids
