Time for the Commissioners and their aides and assistants to get back to reality and should be the first people to take pay cuts, did you see their salaries? I want a job.

Overtime should not be shaved.

Paid overtime should be eliminated -- PERIOD.

Let them have all the overtime they want, but they are salaried people, not time clock clerks.

HOW DOES $44.23 AN HOUR FOR COMMISSION PAY EQUATE TO $92,201.22? COMMISSIONERS, YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED! A ONE DAY A WEEK PART TIME JOB AND YOU TAKE THE TAXPAYERS FOR OVER $92,000. MY MATH SAYS 40 HOURS A WEEK TIMES 52 WEEKS A YEAR EQUALS $91998.40 AND I HOPE YOUR AT YOUR PART TIME DESK FOR 40 HOURS OR THAT'S FRAUD!

OH, the buses have to run on schedule. OH, the parks have to be landscaped. OH, the ships have to move in and out of the port. BUT... the deputies can stop patrolling, the rescues can stop transporting and the fire apparatus can stop suppressing. Leave the cesspool that is Broward County while you still can.

So the commission has excuses to justify overtime. Hmmm. But the Sheriff can't justify overtime BECAUSE OF THE EXACT SAME READONS? Give me a break. I can't wait for all the data to be disclosed by the commission.

No kidding. Someone figured it out!! Holy smokes. Why hasn't the "news reporters" at the "slime-sentinel" reported so. I suppose they wait for the commissioners to give them propaganda to print. After all, liberal democrats stick together... Obama supporters, yeah?

What has the o/t been in past years? Has it suddenly ballooned?
Where was the oversight in the past?
Does the o/t pay increase pensions?
Is it coming to light now because of revenue decreases, the democrat commisioners trying to attack the republican sheriff, or a sincere effort to manage responsibly?

You may actually be surprised to learn that some of BSO's best and brightest do NOT get a dime in overtime. It is because they are select exempt. Not only are they not union, they don't qualify for OT.

This is just crazy. Over time is out of control and nobody seems to care. A well run business tries its best to keep overtime to almost nothing. It should be the first thing they look at when trying to reduce cost. We need a new Broward County government.

Drastically cut the bus service and raise the bus fare, that service should pay for itself. Stop with all the social services, churches and charities should provide these services, not tax money. Raise the sales tax and make everyone pay their fair share, not just property owners. It's time for everyone to contribute, not just those who actually work for a living and don't leech off those who do. Give the sheriff his money, they earned it and we need their service. And will the county commission stop using the newspaper to fight their budget battle, they make themselves look worse everyday.

The Sheriff's Office began to address this issue in January when 12hr shifts were implemented, in part, to see if OT and sick leave time would drop. The six month trial just ended and guess what? IT DID...significantly! And guess what? It looks like the BSO will be going to 12hr shifts in all areas to help reduce the OT issue. This was all done BEFORE the jerky commissioners began this idiotic politically motivated debate.
Did they try a fix of their own BEFORE they were called out??? Didn't they approve ALL of Jenne's budgets? Including the OT figure? Didn't their same auditor find the same issue with Jenne? Can't imagine why it was never brought up before......

How disappointing,
but not surprising,
are the actions of the people on both sides of this issue.

The County Commission has replaced quite a few positions with contract workers from private companies. This is most evident in the security positions at County facilities and security guards that replaced Park Rangers in 2007. It would be interesting to see how much overtime is being paid to these contract personnel and how much more the County spends over the originally budgeted price.
