Deal Wit It. I certainly wouldn't want these convicts being role models for my children. Get a grip people. We are talking kids here. We should have the highest standards in place to work around them no matter their race.
I agree totally. Keep the former lawbreakers on the team and you are sending the kids a message: Even if you break the law, you can come back and be a normal citizen. There are serious ramifications when you break the law. These kids should be told exactly why the coaches can't come back. Give the kids a chance.

Hey if you can set back time and get everyone into a nuclear family than I say Bless You!
Low level drug user or dealer?? You have to kidding me right? Give this kid a break and the next time you stop him, he'll have a gun. Where is your mind?
Stealing a candy bar, tossing an egg, bashing a mail box? Those kids should get a break, dealing drugs...NO

Lets just hand all our kids over to the criminals. Some parents do it every day when they send thier child to school. Go to this web site and see who's teaching your child at school. http://www.myfloridateacher.com/discipline/su...
What is wrong with you people who think it's OK for a former criminal (no matter what the crime) to mentor your child???? Johnson maybe getting his life back in order, but even so, he should not be allowed to be with kids especially when they are at such a nieve, convincible, easily manipulated age.
Claude, your 37 year old needs to step up. Am I wise to assume that he lives at your home with his family. He can find a job he just thinks he's too good for minimum wage. He's 37 and hasn't worked for 3 years?? what did he do before that????? What did he do for 34 years before he decided on burglary?? Was he one of the disadvantaged kids who had a volunteer football coach who used to be former drug dealer???

Wow. you're tough. No second chances. So if you fail one test in school, you should be forced to repeat the grade? If you have one car accident, your driver license should be revoked? With attitudes like this there is no wonder there are so many thugs out there. One mistake and you're a throw-away.

You are an idiot! Comparing failing a test in school to being a convicted drug dealer? Sheeesh. Maybe we should also say that why not give a murdering child molester a second chance too?

Hey Sun-Sentinel,

Great job on this article...hahahaha...interview ing Deputy Harold Morrison.....the community liasion for BSO....maybe Deputy Morrison should run laps and get in shape with the youth of tomorrow...what a joke...another gaffe by Chief Jay Fernandez and Mark Frise....giving another cake position to another BSO loafer...that's like giving a new vehicle (Dodge Charger) to rookie Deputy George Carbocci who already had a new marked unit (2007)....but, that's the new BSO you....forget the veteran's and give everything to the rookies....keep up the good work...BSO.....

The part that confuses me about this is that probably 1/2 of these kids come from neighborhood where drugs are a daily activity; and perhaps have a family member who is drug addicted. Maybe even a family member that is incarcerated. If parents are worried about who is coaching their kids, then perhaps the parent ought to volunteer to coach him/herself; or in the very least attend practices and/or games to make sure their child is safe. I don't condone felony convicts being in total supervision of my children, but treat each VOLUNTEER on a case by case basis. We pay far less attention to the pedophiles we allow in our schools and pay tax dollars to have them there.

That is not what I am saying at all. I am trying to make the point that if people are considered beyond hope and worth, what chance do any of us have? Of course they should still do background checks, but if a person who commits a non-violent crime is willing to change and try to help his community why is that such a problem. Most of the posters on this issue seem to have a "one strike you are out" attitude. And to set the record straight. I have never been arrested or commited any crime.

i truly think people deserve a second chance it depends on the crime and if they have learned from their mistakes people always worry about the crimes that the little poor people do but not the big rich ones.

most of the people who don't want to see a person get a second chance are hypocrites --- most people have commited a crime of some sort , they just have never been caught; and then they rationalize it to make themselves feel better

Someone missed the Operative words "USE TO sell drugs." Not condoning it but this is someone who has been there and knows that activities keep children out of trouble. 6 weeks into the season sounds like someone just chose to be vindictive and "out" the coaches. There should be a current background check. Also. Let the parents weigh in on the decision. This is not a paid job. The parents have been around this coach for 9 games.

JSB: I did not miss the operative words" used to sell drugs. But I think you failed to figure out just how recenty this guy was selling drugs. After all he is only 24.
While I would agree that compassionate people could overlook a minor or juvenile criminal offense, especially one that happened years ago. But in Mr. Johnson's case, his crimes and conviction are very RECENT! This guy is NOT A ROLE MODEL - PERIOD!
As for Deerfield Beach, what a chicken-shit way to handling this situation! Get real and get rid of the convicted drug dealer. Deerfield Beach is full of qualified adults that avoided becoming criminals. Find someone who instead became a hard working, law-abiding citizen. Their are thousands and thousands of them in your City.

Mr Reckley, I attended DBHS and last I remeber his Brother(the toad, he looked like a frog) was arrested for taking nude pictures of a DBHS student. I believe Mr Reckley needs a background check as well. I agree with "Good" these "good coaches" will only recruit these kids to sell drugs as well.

You conveniently ignore the plethora of scandals committed by members of the current administration.

Or perhaps you are just blissfully ignorant due to the fact that your head has been firmly planted in your rectum for the last 6+ years.

those without issues cast the first stone. i have been affiliated with youth programs since the age of 5. My father, uncles, friends of the family, brother and brother-in-law have all coached 20 years plus. Most of the men and women that coach these kids everyday, show them more love then some of their biological parents. I am one of the fortunate ones who come from a family that never has had any serious trouble with the law, by the grace of God, but we realize, that everyone is not so blessed. I agree that no sex , abuse, and domestic violence crimes should be tolerated, however everything else should be on a case by case basis. For those of you who have volunteered 3 years or less, not too much you can say that would mean anything. And to those of you who go out to the field starting in june and don't have a life until after january (with a record and without a record) i would like to say thank you. This is for the people who have so much to say and very little action. Why don't you volunteer next year? Help your community, instead of trying to down those who actually care. There are some people out there that have seen what the streets have to offer and want to steer the children away from this type of life. I cannot believe the ignorance I am reading in your posted comments. Get a grip! Help the kids and the adults keep these kids focused on a better life. By the way, you need to read your postings before you send them, to make sure you are not talking about yourselves. And yes, my kids are in little league, so i have to say goodbye, time for practice

And in some neigborhoods this is the best that they have. Are you expecting some Coral Springs or Boca yuppy to go into these neighborhoods to coach? It's not going to happen. Anyone who is willing to try and help kids stay away from crime (sports not drugs) deserves the chance to do it and the kids deserve to see that people can make something better of their lives.

Deerfield Beach is scum central to begin with and now they have drug dealing coaches, geez. This city is about as low rent as you can get. The city only caters to the poor black people, old bitchy freeloaders in Century Village and government assisted housing losers that have AIDS. The city gets what they deserve. Drug Dealing coaches and a Landscape of pure trailer park trash.
This city is so depressing just to drive through. Look at Boca to the north. Now thats a city that has it going on. Pompano to the south is starting to turn itself around. But little Deerfield is still hanging in there as the worst city in Broward. Id rather live in Lauderhill. How about this one Deerfield Beach. Instead of building another assisted living facility or storage facility. Try building something that will want people to move here. The city even screws its own faithfull employees. What a joke of a city. Nothing but scumbags and drug users inhabit that sesspool. The beach is loaded with drug users. No wonder the taxes are 2000 dollars a year. Ha Ha Ha.
