They keep saying that boaters are the main cause of spreading the mussels - nobody mentions how the waterfowl / shorebirds are probably spreading them.
In my opinion this is just getting started & it cannot be stopped.

So they don't have a natural preditor at all? I would hope that they would be able to find one and try to fix the problem that way. I agree, drifter, with the spread being allot bigger then just boats.

Crayfish and waterfowl eat them. They also clean the lakes and increase the bass population.

The only problem with them is they clog up pipes and etc.

The wife and I always clean off out boat everytime we leave any lake, but not many others do as we have observed. I agree with drifter as well, the birds are probably spreading this too if they don't clean off the little feets before and after taking a dip.

I was told that they are good for the lakes because they clean the lake. I met some fisherman from Michigan and they said that they helped clean up alot of the waters in the Great lakes area. I believe they cause more of a problem to us than they do actual lakes but to try to prevent the spread we wash our boat after every trip to the lake.

I wonder how these mussels will affect the marina business - a lot of people store their boats at the marina and if these mussels get on everything - looks like the marina business maybe a thing of the past.

"Zebra mussels screw up the ecosystem and can damage boat engines."

Is it me or does this statement used as a picture caption in the article sound a little unprofessional?

Yeah, they seem great for a while since they clean up the water, but in the end the fishery crashes. By cleaning the water they remove all the cooties the little fish eat, so the little fish die out, then the big fish die out because there aren't little fish for them to feed on.
