The town had its name changed in 1932, after a member of the city council became fed up with hoodlums vandalizing city signs and changing the city's displayed name, Cassville, to "assville".

With the negative connotations associated with the word "gay", do you think it's time for the town to adopt a new name? Would you sign a petition to change the name? What name would you choose? Why?

Please be serious.

The name, if i understand it correctly, has historical significance. It's only small minded people that asosciate the negative connatation to it!!!...(i.e.. like compton, southcentral, harlem and such...). check some names of towns up in amish country PA for a laugh...

Fort Gallup was the name of the fort in Louisa from which the name Fort Gay was derived. Where they got Gay from Gallup, I do not know. But I think Gallup sounded better. :-/

Chief, guess I will have to agree with you, after reading all of the comments in regards to 90 per cent posted on the forum, there must be a few problems haunting the town.
I was born in Cassville in 1929 and in 1932 it became Fort Gay. I was still me, changing the name of the community didn't change me. Now at the age of 80, do you think by changing the name will change me or the town ?
Fort Gay has always been special to me. Growing up during the depression of the 30's, no work available, most everyone out of
work. No government programs such as welfare, food stamps, etc
yet the town truly looked out for one and another. Let one be sick
and the town was there. Lock doors, after my Mother died and we were leaving the house empty, we couldn't find a key but gone for two months and everything was same as always when we returned.
There is still about nine of us from our class, living from California, Florida, Virginia, Maine, in contact with each other and still proud to be called "A Fort Gay Viking".
No, changing the name and not the condition will have no inprovement. You're right.
thank you

I think they should change the name to Fort Homosexual American to be more politically correct.

Fort Homosexual is a terrible idea! I think changing the name to something else would be pretty swell.

You people really make me sick to see you put down your hometown this way. Yes Fort Gay has many problems, but let me tell you something. Travel around to other states, cities, especially the big ones. Look around them, spend some time in some of them, it doesn't even have to be long, maybe an hour! If you haven't ever done that, you haven't seen nothing yet!!!! I have done that personally! I saw with my own eyes the REAL dopeheads, the homeless people by groves laying on the streets and in allys, alcoholics begging for money, prostitutes openly soliciting. People that looked like clowns to me, the way they were dressed, some not dressed hardly at all. GAYS openly making out in public! You think our town is bad?? You think the name is bad?? Like I said, you haven't seen anything, and I was never so glad and thankful for our hometown in my life, and to get back HOME to it. Some of you people get on here and just complain to be complaining, but those of you that really believe the name of this town needs to be changed because it is a problem or embarrassment to you,,,YOU need to have a wake up call and face REALITY!! We have nothing bad here compared to the other states and cities. Our dope problems here isn't even a drop in the bucket compared to these other places, and I know ours is really bad. Be thankful for that and for our hometown and try to improve it instead of always running it down!!!

The fort in Louisa was Fort Bishop. It was on the hill by the radio towers. The road is still called Fort Bishop Road.

I Think that I have the solution as far as changing of the name. Believe it will go along with the forum of "Community watch" also ! There isn't a need for a name change, the town and name can remain. What there is a need for is; create another town and let those who are finding fault,
always downing others and posting junk or filth
move. It certainly wouldn't require much land, an old land fill or dump would do ! For once, they would be doing something to inprove Fort Gay.

Stand by for fundamental changes in a close relationship today. Something that has been hidden or secret until now comes to the surface, forcing you to acknowledge it. For instance, if you fancy someone but haven't done anything about it, the atmosphere between you now could become so torrid that you're finally overtaken by passion.
