They'd much rather people were used instead of animals.

I respectfully, disagree. Below are my reasons why:
1. Pigs and goats are non-human companions. They are animals that are raised with the purpose of being slaughtered and consumed.
2. 116,052,480 pigs are are slaughtered each year.
3. Battles are fought and won based on attrition. In other words one side losing less to death, wounds and capture than the other. Battle of Somme, the 300 at Thermopylae, the Battle of the Bulge. The Revolutionary War was a war based entirely on attrition.
4. If you are a Soldier or Marine and are wounded you want to be treated by a medic/corpsman who has worked on a live patient before. Not a manikin, not a simulator. Though no simulator in the world will ever be as hard as being in the shit with real dying people that require you to help them live... Porky the pig is pretty damn close.
5. If you are a civilian and you have a heart attack you want a paramedic to come that has put on an EKG before and given cardiac meds.
6. If you are a medic, you want to have performed procedures on live tissue before and have learned them properly in a controlled environment. You don't want to see real blood for the first time far from home. Real blood - for the first time, not on a manikin, but a Soldier. Probably a friend. An American. Someones son or daughter.
7. And what of the psychological trauma sustained by this medic if he fails, which he/she has a much greater chance as they have no practical experience? And the onlookers, his friends. His squad doesn't go on mission for a few days. His company, remembers for years to come.
8. 5,096 US service members have died in Iraq and Afghan. Perhaps 10% of those would have lived if there prehospital care by first responders had been perfect. Maybe 5%. Lets take 3%, the most conservative possible estimate. 152 US Servicemembers. Not worth all the pigs in the damn world.
