Former Drum official dies on way to church

I remember Paul well. When I was settling in as the Media Relations Officer at Drum (1986), Paul took me on a tour of the construction area. "See those trees over there? Well,'someone' thought we should cut them down for the new parade field and plant saplings. I told them to think again...we need those old, sprawling trees for wind breaks...they are moving the parade field...they weren't taking my trees!" I knew he and I would be friends. It seems like yesterday he called me at my new job (Army Human Resources Command Public Affairs)-- our secretary said, "You have a call from some guy named 'Paul.'" I thought for a second what Paul, then picked up the phone...it was Major General Paul...he was asking a favor...and I was glad to help. He was the "quiet" general on the staff, but he had heart and he loved his Soldiers. I will miss my friend.

I met Paul Cerjan when he was already retired - he traveled to Israel in a group I ran and he was an extraordinary gentleman and a great military mind. He saw things in our travels that others didn't see, and understood what he saw. He was on the Board of Advisors of JINSA and always had time for questions and analysis. He was a man of faith, integrity and humor - he was an asset to the United States military, a great American and a very good friend. He will be sorely missed.
