Thank you for your work to educate other young people. We must end the war cult our government fosters and the only way to do that is by educating our youth. Your story will touch millions. Bless you for finding a way to use your horrific experiences for positive work. Bless you in your future life.

Amazing story. Compliments to Spc. Cherry, the reporter, and the editors who made space in the Tribune for this story.

I'm a Viet Nam vet. Thank goodness for other vets and folks who reach out. The lower ranks of the military are just pawns in the power game. War is not glorious. It's not about "service" to your country. War is about money and markets. As Marine Major General Smedley Butler said "War is a racket". For me war is like slavery - the people at the top say the country can't exist without it. But for the slaves, it's a different story.

My Son is serving his 4th deployment, 82nd Airborne. My Son did not sign up for the Army to go to college. He joined the Army to get the terrorists who killed 3,000 Americans in one day!

I'm sorry Mr. Cherry is not well but turning your back on your Brothers is not the right thing to do. Work harder in your therapy and skip making movies with Matt Damon. We are in a war and what you are doing is hurting our Soldiers and aiding and abetting the enemy.

I will never forgive and I will never forget! God Bless Our Soldiers and God Bless The Band of Brothers.

What a great story about Eugene Cherry. I appreciate all the details that give us some glimpse into the day in the life of a brave and deserving veteran. I have met Eugene Cherry and am very impressed by him. I wish him and his family the best.

In response to Beverly, I congratulate your son for his service and desire to keep our country free. My comment is that Iraq was not responsible for 9/11. We attacked the wrong people. We are even dropping the ball in Afghanistan which is where Osama was known to be. I also am a Viet Nam era vet and totally support our military. But what our country (Bush Co.) has done to Iraq and countless other countries over the past 100 years,in the name of freedom,is unforgivable. I will continue to fight for a responsible and moral government and continue to support our troops so they aren't misused by an uncaring, unjust and controlling government.

The ignorant comment is from Marat. He also uses Big John Wayne and Miss Muffet and maybe other people‘s IDs too. His ISP can be Aldershot, Plaistow, Leatherhead, Banstead, Perivale, West Clandon, Guildford, or just UK.
He is a troll and likes to incite anger. He changes ISP so is hard to block. There seems to be something wrong with him that feeds off of this behaviour. Now it is ‘Honest John’ of all things!

I wish only the best for Eugene. My son is a OEF vet and is heading to Iraq in a few months. worry everyday about the lasting effects these deployements will have on him and pray that if he will recieve the help he needs if the time comes.
God bless our troops!!
