Army sergeant is tired of living 2 lives under 'Don't ask, don't tell'

There are 20 comments on the www.syracuse.com story from Jan 10, 2010, titled Army sergeant is tired of living 2 lives under 'Don't ask, don't tell'. In it, www.syracuse.com reports that:

Chuck Iavarone was 19 when he decided to start living his life as an openly gay man. He came out after he graduated from Cicero-North Syracuse High School. He started college, but left after the Sept. 11 attacks to join the U.S. Army Reserve.

He went to basic training. And stepped back into the closet.

For the past eight years, Iavarone has lived a dual life. Openly gay at home. Straight in the Army.

Thank you rdg1234, you and one other person on this panel really made my day. I was so ashamed of what I have been reading in a lot of these posts, until your comment. There was a comment about a "gay inmate" gang raping a straight guy in prison. Well I have to say that whomever wrote that could very well have been one of the MANY idiots I served with on several aircraft carriers. While I was stationed on CVN73 from 2000 to 2004 we had NUMEROUS accounts of men sneaking into the womens berthings and molesting them. Nothing SERIOUS every came out of that. We also had NUMEROUS accounts of women getting pregnant JUST to get out of going overseas for their 6 month deployment. I think its plainly obvious that people who complain about gay men in the military are not very intelligent and are afraid. I would bet that they would not have any problems with lesbians serving in the military. I know this from experience since I lived it for 20 years.

I started out debating this issue respectfully. I have come to a point where I will (metaphorically, of course) rip out the throat of any military person who *dares* to tell me, a full-blooded citizen of this country, that the military is doing *anything* honorable with DADT or that I should "show more respect." They will get the respect they earn. Otherwise, they're spineless and they *lack* every scrap of trustworthiness, honor, courage, bravery or intelligence that any average citizen could offer.

Believe me, I know how *extraordinarily despicable* those military men can be.

They are the persons who I believe inspired my use of the epithet that while human beings are carbon-based life forms,

those military men are carbon-based piles of garbage: literally worthless human beings.

The depth of my savage, savage contempt for them is truly indescribable. I literally *don't care what happens to them and don't care WHAT they're doing for the country*, and NOTHING will change that.

Those who are HONORABLE to their fellow soldiers, ALL of them: That's a different story. They are our heroes.

I thank you for this post and I thank you for its honesty. I also thank you for your service.

The homophobic/anti-gay ones are stupid scum and I would spit in their faces before I'd thank them for any service.

Their service is *worthless* to me and deserves no honor and no respect whatsoever, only the deepest, most uncompromising contempt for *every* ounce of their toil and their tears.

Period.

Those who honor *ALL* of their fellow service members: You are the America that god himself must smile down upon. Thank you.

Homosexuality is NOT comparable to ancesty / race / skin color. Period. If it is ever proven that homosexuality is genetic, then I'll change my tune.
Trying to enlighten those who refuse to learn anything contrary to their own bias is indeed a fool's mission. I had forgotten that. Thank you for reminding me.
You're the perfect example of this. You choose to believe homosexuality is a choice, though it flys in the face of logic that anyone would choose to live a life style that subjects them to such blind bigotry as yours. Still, trying to point out reality to someone like you is impossible, you believe you know it all. If you ever saw the pain your thinking causes innocent people who just happen to have been born gay, you might learn a little something about compassion and leave your air tight shell of indifference to your own cruel thinking.

Actually, I used phobia correctly & if you honestly believe that I'm beginning to look rather silly, then maybe you need to look the word phobia up. Instead, here it is for you & everyone else on this thread:
Phobia - an intense and persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things, animals, or people [most heteros do NOT have either an intense nor a persisten fear of homosexuals; the first just don't like what the second choose to do or being around the second because the first don't approve of the homo lifestyle]
Phobia - An unreasonable sort of fear that can cause avoidance and panic [Again, it isn't a fear. And, it is NOT unreasonable for people not to want to be stuck in situations where they are forced to be around others who are sexual deviants [better look this word up before you jump all over me]] Here's an example: I used to work as a Park Ranger & it seemed as if the only public I ever got to deal with were those who were problems. So, I'm out dealing with some problems [drinking, drugs & domestic dispute] when out of the blue this woman starts hitting on me. Now, I was already in a really tense situation & the last thing I needed was to have someone [lesbian] hitting on me. After that, I used to wonder if in the next really tense situation I was going to have to deal with that as well. Not good.
And yes, I happen to know many Christians who used to life as a homosexuals but no longer do. Do you?
Oh, well, of course you know many Christians who used to live as homosexuals. Certainly you did. That story may impress those simple enough to take anything for granted as the truth, but there has never been any indication that anyone who was born gay ever changed, any more than anyone who was born straight ever became gay. It's quite ordinary for some to have homosexual experiences and say they were gay but were cured, through some sort of program, rehabilitation or religious experience, but that doesn't mean the person was ever anything than someonee who felt guilt over doing something, our of curiosity, that they found repulsive and wanted to vacuum their conscience.

Oh, you poor dear. Ever consider saying, I'm not interested and walking? I know you were simply terrified that this person was going to attack you physically, but I doubt that was ever the plan. And, that does show a phoebic reaction. I've had lots of guys hit on me over the years, and I can say no to them as easily as I can any of the women who hit on me when I wasn't interested.

Too True!! Just when I lose all hope in humanity ( like "Katie" ) someone comes along and let's me know that there really is intelligent life out there. There are several people that have posted comments similar to yours ( I apologize for not remembering all of them ). I just wish there were more people like you out there in the U.S.A.
I once read somewhere that "People who think the U.S. is a progressive country do not own a passport" I totally agree with that .
Well you restored my hope for humanity as well, by showing me that I'm not one of the only ones that believe this way.:) I dont have a passport, also, but I know better.

Piss off. Soldiers are protecting your sorry butt from enemies all over the world, and gay or not, you should be grateful.

And be honest with yourself-do you really think gay people would CHOOSE to be gay?

First off, the biggest gayest man I ever met was from Watertown, NY. So, you see, we are everywhere.
Second, there are MANY gay and lesbian soldiers out there, defending your worthless lazy huge fat ass. They may die, having to lie about who they really are, while you sit there, stuffing down Cheetos, they are being maimed and actualy dying to protect your freedoms, and easy access to high carbs and wide screen TV, which match your ass in width.
You ungrateful piece of you know what. You are not worth THEIR sacrifice.
And, tool, it is WEREN'T, not WERE'NT. Why are the pretty ones always so DUMB?

Ironic that you would choose to call yourself "Think About It" before posting a comment which displays your complete inability to do just that. Because, if you "Think About It", that was an awful lot of stupid to cram into just one sentence.

You didn't have to, as anyone reading your first "thought" already knew, but thank you for proving me right, again. Idiocy and hate are choices, really bad ones, but yet, you chose them anyways. I'd tell you to "Think About It", but you've proved beyond all doubt, that's not something you do very well.

What's your miserable existance doing for society, besides keeping Home Town Buffet in near bankruptcy, due to your over eating, while that brave man risks his life, to protect your huge dimpled ass. You are not worthy to clean his boots, space waster.

Sitting on one's immense feces caked ass, while others die to protect your freedom to criticize them is also a choice, wide load. You are not fit to clean his latrine, without a brush and only your bare hands.

Yeah, WHATEVER. You can't spell straight. I'd say that you're either a jarhead or still in high school.

Try looking up Colonel Fehrenbach. That man is braver than you will ever be, and he's a gay man. So shut it.

Well, whoop de doo to you. I take pride in ALL members of the services, straight and gay. Anyone who dedicated his or her life to protecting everyone at home is OK in my book. ANYONE in the service, tool. In other days persons of color were not allowed to serve with the precious whites. I bet if you had been there, you would have been the first to compain about them also.
